: DOST-MIMAROPA TO COLLABORATE WITH DAR, ADVENTIST HEALTH PRODUCTS FOR SOYBEAN PRODUCTION IN PALAWAN

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST-MIMAROPA), Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR)-MIMAROPA, and the assisted beneficiary, Adventist Health Products (AHP), converged virtually on May 20 to discuss possible production of local soybeans in Palawan.

Known in Puerto Princesa City for its soybean-based products such as taho, soya milk, and tofu, AHP uses around 400 kilograms of soybeans per day. They prefer soybeans imported from Canada for their milky taste and consistency and high yield of soya milk.

The goal of the convergence was to give opportunities for Agrarian Reform Communities (ARCs) to supply soybeans to AHP. DOST-MIMAROPA, DAR, and AHP agreed to start growing soybeans locally through a small test plot. DAR agreed to coordinate with and get assistance from the Department of Agriculture for the trial planting, while DOSTMIMAROPA will assist in testing the local soybean variety for viability as a substitute for the imported Canadian soybean variety being used for AHP products. If found competitive as to product quality and cost, locally produced soybeans shall be used by AHP, and the area expansion for growing soybeans shall be warranted.

DOST-MIMAROPA, DAR, and AHP also envision developing healthy food products using dried vegetables. They are looking into the possibility of removing moisture content in vegetables while keeping their nutritional value and freshness. This innovation will further help the ARCs especially the vegetable farmers in the province.
