Steady consistent efforts in the fight against HIV yield significant results! ๐ ๐ฅฐ
Congratulations to the local government unit of Puerto Princesa City on its Outstanding Achievement in Policy and Service Delivery citation, received at the culminating activity of the Communities Operationalizing People-centered HIV Response (COPE) Project.
The award recognizes the success of the amended HIV Ordinance No. 1241 which strengthens and invests in Puerto Princesa's HIV response and establishes a dedicated Local AIDS Council for it. Roots of Health played a pivotal role in this development, leading efforts to lobby for and ultimately secure the passage of the enhanced HIV ordinance.
Aside from strengthening government policies and systems, our HIV program focuses on reducing HIV infections and fostering a supportive community for people living with HIV(PLWH) in Palawan. By partnering with organizations like Tandikan Puerto Princesa Inc., a grassroots organization empowering communities by raising awareness for rights-based HIV-related services, we are reaching more people with essential services like free condoms, screenings, and vital medical care.
We believe that small but persistent efforts pave the way toward a future free from HIV.
We are deeply grateful and proud to be part of this recognition. Every acknowledgment fuels our commitment to continue supporting our communities and protecting all against HIV.
Thank you for standing with us on this important journey!

Atty. Lorna Kapunan was right to enlighten Senator Robin Padilla on marital consent during the recent Senate hearing on s*xual harassment, stressing that both spouses have the right to refuse s*x, even within marriage.
While this may seem like common sense, many Filipinos share Senator Padillaโs view as shown by our analysis of the 2021 Young Fertility and Sexuality Study (YAFS5) by the University of the Philippines Population Institute. Over 30 percent of young people โ males and females aged 15 to 24 โ in the four regions we work in believe โit is the wifeโs duty to have s*x with her husband whenever he wants itโ.
Instead of getting lost in outrage, we must focus on how to address this troubling mindset.
Roots of Health has been providing free s*xual and reproductive health information and services in Palawan for 15 years. Our research shows that a significant percentage of first s*xual encounters among young people in the province are unplanned, and many are coerced. This has serious consequences, contributing to high rates of teenage pregnancy, single parent households, abortion, and the rapid spread of s*xually transmitted infections, including HIV.
The YAFS5 and our own Youth Survey indicate that young people often turn to social media, family, and friends for information on s*x and relationships. Unfortunately, many older generations, including figures like Senator Padilla, lack accurate knowledge themselves.
As an NGO committed to improving awareness and behavior around s*xual health, we conduct community sessions and create digital platforms like malayaako.ph, and the I Choose and Usapang K pages, to reach young people with credible, non-judgmental information in the Tagalog language. Consent is one of our most popular topics.
However, our efforts alone are not enough. We need the Department of Education (DepEd) to implement comprehensive s*xuality education as mandated by the 2012 Reproductive Health Law and the 2018 DepEd memo. Teachers need proper training to confidently and effectively teach these essential topics.
The recent controversy around Senator Padilla should serve as a wake-up call. We all have a responsibility to understand and promote the importance of consent, especially to our children. We call on the Philippine government, particularly DepEd, to fulfill its mandate and roll out comprehensive s*xuality education now.
August is International Youth Month. No one should be coerced into s*x, whether in a long-term relationship or not. Letโs work together to guide young people in making informed decisions about their s*xual and reproductive health and rights, so they can develop and thrive. # # #

It is with profound sadness that Roots of Health mourns the passing of Karen Puertollano, who served with us as a midwife from February 2018 to March 2019.
Karen was a wonderful colleague and an incredibly beautiful person inside and out. She was gentle and kind and had a nurturing way about her. Everyone loved Karen โ our colleagues, community volunteers, and clients, especially the young ones that she cared for.
Karenโs faith in God was a guiding light in her life, and she consistently uplifted those around her with her positivity and belief in the power of prayer.
We are devastated by this loss, as Karen was a beloved member of our Roots of Health family. We extend our sympathies to her loving husband and her family in this time of grief.
We believe that empowering women to take charge of their reproductive health is crucial for a brighter future. ๐ชโจ
Our advocacy for gender equality and women empowerment is essential for sustainable development for all peoples. Empowering women to make informed decisions about s*xual relations, contraceptive use, and reproductive health care is key to achieveing this goal.
In our 15-year journey, we have served 127,800 women through our free clinical services and outreach programs. We protected 60,780 women from unplanned pregnancies and provided prenatal care for 4,200 women. ๐คฐโค๏ธ
Beyond our services, we continuously gather data and insights from the field to better understand the challenges and deliver the best solutions to our clients.
We commemorate World Population Day and advocate for a world where every woman has the right to shape her own future.

๐โจPuerto Princesa City came alive on June 30 with the colors of Pride! Over 450 participants including Roots of Health marched to show support to the LGBTQIA+ community.
Marching throughout the city to end at the City Coliseum, the parade featured colorful outfits and a festive energy. The Coliseum hosted booth activities, a costume competition, a moving candlelight memorial, and drag performances by our youth advocate queens.
The Roots of Health booth was a hit, with a mirror selfie activity, brochures on our s*xual and reproductive health services, giveaway stickers, and over 200 free condoms. We treated the crowd to prizes through a game show that shared tidbits of information on contraceptives, HIV, and healthy relationships.
Roots of Health is incredibly proud to be part of the PPC Pride event again this year. We remain committed to supporting the LGBTQ+ community through our clinical outreach and community-building efforts.
Join us on KeriTogether as we continue to advocate for and uplift each other!
We celebrate the power of informed choices and women taking control of their futures.๐ช๐ผ
Our clinical team visited Bahai Arugaan ni Maria, a reproductive health and birthing clinic in Aborlan, Puerto Princesa and happily served 63 women in the community by giving them access to contraceptive implants.
We partnered with Palawan State University-College of Nursing and Health Sciences to also provide women with proper knowledge in family planning. This proved to be successful as the participants showed keen interest in learning about various contraceptive options, particularly the implant. They were impressed by its efficacy and convenience.
Weโre happy to see that women are more empowered to make informed decisions when they have the right knowledge, access, and support. ๐ธ

Here at Roots of Health we stand in solidarity with the LGBTQIA+ community. We embrace everyone for who they are and empower others to do the same everyday.
Roots of Health offers non-judgemental s*xual and reproductive health services to all. We partner with LGBTQIA+ organizations, increase access to free clinical services and contraceptives, train health workers on non-discriminatory community-based HIV screening, and provide comprehensive s*xuality education to young people.
While this month is dedicated to the celebration of pride, our celebration continues everyday of the year. Join us as we continue to fight for everyoneโs freedom to be their most authentic selves.

Through our comprehensive s*x education sessions, we have learned that a lot of girls believe that period blood is dirty ๐
Weโre determined to debunk this belief and equip girls and boys with the right knowledge about menstrual health!
Exciting news! We recently had the chance to bring free ligation and vasectomy services closer to Palaweรฑos through our partnership with DKT Philippines Foundation !
Permanent family planning methods in the Philippines can cost almost 4 times the monthly income of an average Filipino. The cost, coupled with misconceptions, make these an unpopular choice for most.
To ease concerns and encourage more people to avail of these services, Roots of Health conducted an information campaign on ligation and vasectomy online and in-person. Our clinical team provided comprehensive guidance to interested women and men during a pre-screening event at our clinic. They also ensured that those who were interested in the procedures were medically assessed to ensure safety and suitability. We supported the clients from the initial consultation, through the operation, and into the postoperative stage.
Weโre happy to share that 25 clients (21 female and 4 male) availed of the procedures and are now worry-free against unplanned pregnancies!
We look forward to conducting more of these activities with our partners and empowering more Filipinos to plan their families by providing a range of contraceptive options, including permanent ones.

It's Month, but young people still find it difficult to access s*x ed.
Weโre working closely with educators and youth leaders to ensure that essential information on Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health (ASRH) reaches young people in schools and communities.
Our team constantly creates age-appropriate and localized resources for teens to learn more about ASRH. We also work with the Department of Education to mainstream our resources and teaching methods into the public school system.
Young people deserve accurate and comprehensive ASRH information designed for them, so they can make healthy decisions about s*x and relationships, now and in the future ๐ชโจ

Roots of Health was established in 2009 by Dr. Susan Evangelista and her daughter, Amina Evangelista Swanepoel. Susan was teaching at Palawan State University in Puerto Princesa and was concerned about unplanned pregnancies and the lack of reproductive health knowledge among her students. Amina had just completed a double Masters Degree in International Affairs and Public Health at Columbia University in New York City.
The two women felt that together they could share reproductive health lessons with women and young people in marginalized communities, thereby improving health and the general quality of life in this very poor province of the Philippines. Shortly after starting the program, women asked them for clinical services and Ami and Susan realized that health knowledge needed to be matched with easily available and free clinical services. Thus began the Roots of Health approach of coupling education with services.
