A National Historical Commission marker was unveiled this morning, February 4, 2022, at the corner of Sociego (Calm) and Silencio (Silence) streets in Santa Mesa whose peacefulness was disrupted by the first shot in the Philippine-American War fired there in 1899. This event was previously believed to have occurred on San Juan bridge until the late Dr. Benito J. Legarda corrected the error.
Contemporary newspaper reports like the New York Times that I reference in my Inquirer column today do not mention a bridge in San Juan but give the site as Santa Mesa. I got into trouble years ago when, as Historical Commission Chair I adopted the Legarda correction. I did not realize that by correcting history and moving the site from San Juan to Manila, the former lost a holiday and its place as a footnote in our nation's history. The link to my column:

Thank you sir Ambeth!!
In 2019, I consulted the New York Public Library album of Philippine Costumes by Justiniano Asuncion in a locked, windowless, Rare Book Room. I told the librarian that when I first handled the album in the 1980s I was allowed to take it out of the room so I could look at the plates in natural light--out in the corridor by a window. She replied gruffly: "That was a mistake that will not happen today!"
In retrospect I could have walked out the entrance on Fifth Avenue with this treasure :) With current auction prices for Asuncion's work these must really be kept under lock and key.
My Inquirer column today on this album that comes with both images and text of the Philippines and Filipinos in the mid-19th century.

Eye opener.😊
Anti-Marcos story.
FROM ANTI TO BELIEVER.
I graduated from UP Diliman, kaliwa't kanan ang mga aktibista sa pag-rally but I was a meek student, never akong sumali sa rallies but I admit that the brainwashing was real.
Sobrang na-curious ako kaya sinubukan kong panoorin yung interview, with an open mind. While watching, may kakaiba akong naramdaman.. I was waiting for Bongbong to give me a hint na pekeng BBM siya, pero mas lalo akong natuwa sa mga shinare niya about his father and himself. I got more curious kaya pinanood ko rin yung interview ni Ms. Toni kina Pacquiao at Leni. Si Pacquiao, I felt that he's too blinded that the Philippines needs saving by him, but he lacks the capacity and wisdom to do so, lalo kung marami siyang advisers na laging bumubulong sa kanya, while Leni is very warm as a mother of 3 daughters na lahat sila girls and a wife, but not a leader to the highest position kung gusto niyang bilis-bilisan ang takbo ng sasakyan while her supporters are cheering for her.
Dahil confused at mas lalo akong naging curious, I began to watch BBM Vlogs, seriously listen to Thinking Pinoy's analysis on every issue lalo sa mga DQ cases ni BBM na nagsulputan kung saan-saan, follow Mayor Inday Sara's journey until she finally declares her candidacy as VP to partner with BBM, and read posts from Ms. Ethel Pineda, MNR Edwin Jamora, KLC, Rita Gadi, Coach Jarret and many more. Tapos dumating na ang kaliwa't kanang caravan for BBM. Sobrang overwhelming at nakakaiyak! Deep in my heart, I am rooting for BBM, because he taught me to love my enemies at napaka-humble ng family niya.
I concealed my identity dahil marami po akong kakilalang pro-Leni na palaban. Natatakot po akong ma-bash at mahusgahan. 🙏🏻 Maraming salamat po sa inyong oras.
