Time Travel: Gilarmi Apartments, Makati.
The Gilarmi Apartments on Ayala Avenue is no more. It was replaced by Discovery Primea that was thoughtful enough to name its ground-floor piano bar the Gilarmi.
While browsing over old magazines, I came across a photograph of Armi Kuusela (Left) Miss Finland, who won the very first Miss Universe Pageant in 1952. She married Virgilio Hilario, a Filipino businessman, and chose not to continue her term. She relinquished the Miss Universe Crown and settled in Manila where she and her husband managed prime real estate, that included the first apartment hotel in Makati named after them Gil+Armi.
They were one of the early endorsers or "influencers" appearing with four of their five children in a Darigold Milk advertisement (Right). Widowed Armi Kuusela now lives in the U.S

Mapua Techās Alfredo āFreddieā Hubalde played behind William Adornado and Fortunato Co Jr. in Crispaās star-studded rotation. His big break came after Adornado suffered a knee injury in the 1977 season, propelling him and Co into the stellar roles. While Co wound up as the leagueās top scorer, it was Hubalde who walked away with the MVP award.
Hubalde is among the most decorated players in league history, winning a total of 16 PBA championships in a 16-year career, during which he averaged 12.5 points.

ASING, as he appeared in 1913 when he was interviewed by Vicente Sotto. He was 20 when he was employed as Rizal's cook in Hong Kong from November 1891 to June 1892. In an interview that appeared in Renacimiento Filipino he said:
"I was the cook of the Rizal family for more than a year. SeƱong Rizal was very good and never shouted at me nor hit me...my salary was five pesos a month with food.
"My amo was not delicado about food. He ate everything but he was very moderate... during breakfast as well as dinner [he ate] both bread and rice that were often served at the dinner table. Dr. Rizal was like a fish: he drank nothing but water. Not a drop of alcohol.
"You know when he was unjustly executed, I cried so much as if my own father had died...He was very good!"

History of Alemars Bookstore
When couple Dr. Ernesto and Alegria Sibal started selling American books from a one-table store in 1945, little did they know that their business would grow into āthe biggest and most modern bookstore in the Far Eastā in the 50s and 60s. Their bookshopāALEMARāS was derived from Mrs. Sibalās nameāALEgria, and the first given name of the Sibal daughters, MARia.
ALEMAR'S, in its heyday, had its main store on Rizal Avenue and branches in Ermita, Recto, Quezon City and Makati. It ventured into printing and publishing in 1950, through its Phoenix Press and Phoenix Publishing House.
ALEMARāS carried more than just booksālocal, imported, textbooks, used books-- it also sold school and office supplies, toys, menās, ladiesā and childrenās wear, home accessories, magazines and more. Central Book Supply, a division specializing in law books, was also put up. With more aggressive competition from National Bookstore and with heirs leaving for the U.S., ALEMAR'S started closing its shops in the 1980s.

Good Earth Plaza (later became Good Earth Emporium)
The Good Earth Plaza was located in the corner of Avenida and Bustos Streets. It was the first and largest department store in Avenida, and the first to feature escalators. It has a coffee shop flocked by churchgoers who attend mass at the nearby Sta. Cruz parish.
Originally Good Earth Emporium, it was initially a single department store, and then became Good Earth Plaza and housed a number of commercial shops. It remained operational until a fire consumed the building in 2008.
