Approximately 25% of CHD patients will need surgery or other interventions in the first year of life to survive. These patients are considered to have Critical Congenital Heart Disease. Many if not most of these critical patients will have additional interventions throughout their lifetime. For families with critical CHD newborns, and for critical CHD patients undergoing additional interventions, putting trust into the hands of a surgeon is overwhelming. Being thrust into an unfamiliar, stressful and scary territory makes decision making even more difficult. Conquering CHD has created the tool Questions to Ask the Cardiac Team in an effort to promote open dialogue between the patient and family and the care team.
