Ohayo joins the observance of the Obon Festival (お盆) in Japan today, August 13, 2023.

The national holiday commemorates the deceased ancestors of Japanese families in which they believe that their spirits visit the living during this day. Chochin or paper lanterns were usually used to guide spirits as they wander the earth. Obon dances were also performed. At the end of the festival, the spirits will be sent back to the sky through the tradition of floating lanterns at the sea.

Ohayo joins the celebration of Mountain Day or Yama No Hi (山の日) in Japan today, August 11, 2023.

The national holiday roots from Japan’s geographical structure having more than 70% mountainous features, with Mt. Fuji as its highest peak. The reason for the celebration’s date is because the number eight in kanji is written as “八”. With this, August is the eighth month in the calendar, while the kanji character looks like a mountain and can resemble the number eleven. The Japanese then gives appreciation to the mountains of Japan during the said day.
