Protect your eyes from Diabetic Retinopathy π
FACTS ABOUT DIABETIC RETINOPATHY
Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes that affects your eye. High blood sugar levels can result in the blockage of tiny blood vessels that supply nourishment to the retina of your eye. The retina is the layer of cells lining the back wall inside the eye. This layer senses light and sends signals to the brain so you can see.
With the blockage cutting off blood supply to the retina, your eye attempts to grow new blood vessels which do not develop properly and can leak easily. The damaged blood vessels and abnormal new ones can cause vision loss.
Consult your ophthalmologist for more information about diabetic retinopathy.
A PUBLIC ADVISORY FROM THE PHILIPPINE ACADEMY OF OPHTHALMOLOGY: Beware of unproven eye medicine, eye drops, and eye devices that are being peddled as a cure-all or prevention of the different eye conditions. Consult your ophthalmologist for the proper care of your eyes.
World Diabetes Day Today!
Letβs control that blood sugar and protect the eye! ππ
DIABETIC RETINOPATHY TREATMENT OPTIONS
Your doctor will recommend a healthy lifestyle to control your blood sugar and blood pressure, which can help stop vision loss. You should take your prescribed diabetes medication/s.
Your doctor may administer anti-VEGF injections to help reduce swelling of the macula, slow vision loss and possibly improve vision. Steroids may also be injected to reduce macular swelling.
Laser surgery might be performed to help seal off leaking blood vessels to reduce swelling of the retina, as well as help shrink blood vessels and prevent them from growing again. In some cases, more than one treatment is needed.
A type of surgery called vitrectomy may be recommended for individuals with advanced proliferative diabetic retinopathy. In vitrectomy, your ophthalmologist removes vitreous gel and blood from leaking vessels in the back of your eye. This allows light rays to focus properly on the retina again. Scar tissue also might be removed from the retina.
Consult your ophthalmologist for more information.

Learn about Diabetic Retinopathy
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU HAVE DIABETIC RETINOPATHY?
In its early stages, diabetic retinopathy often has no symptoms. Symptoms develop when the condition gets worse. These include seeing more and more floaters (spots in your vision), having blurred vision, having vision that changes sometimes from blurry to clear, having poor night vision, having blank or dark areas in your field of vision, noticing colors appear faded or washed out, and losing vision.
Talk to your eye doctor for more information.

Near-sightedness or myopia π
MYOPIA (NEARSIGHTEDNESS)AWARENESS FOR SIGHT SAVING MONTH!
Myopia or nearsightedness is an eye focusing disorder in which close objects look clear but distant objects appear blurred. To have clear vision, light rays must travel through your cornea and lens which then bend (refract) the light so it lands on the retina. The retina turns light into signals that travel to your brain and become images. With myopia, the eye does not refract light properly, affecting vision.

EYELASH EXTENSIONS: HOW TO FIND THE RIGHT SALON
Find out if the salon has a good reputation, how long they have been in business, and if they practice good hygiene. Read reviews and look at before-and-after photos from other customers. Ask what training, certification, and experience the shop's aestheticians have in lash extensions. Ask for the glue's ingredient list and check it for allergens; confirm whether the expiration date has not passed. Request a spot test on the inside of your wrist before the glue is applied to your eyes.

CATARACT SURGERY: FACTORS TO CONSIDER
Talk to your ophthalmologist about the type of intraocular lens (IOL) that meets your vision needs, lifestyle, and budget. PhilHealth and most insurance companies and HMOs provide coverage for cataract surgery. Take into account that it may take days to weeks to recover from cataract surgery. Your ophthalmologist will talk with you about how active you can be soon after surgery. Like any surgical procedure, cataract surgery carries risks of problems or complications.

WHAT CAUSES EYE ALLERGIES?
When an allergen comes in contact with your eye, mast cells in your eye release histamine to fight off the allergen. This causes your eyes to become red, itchy and watery. Allergens include pollen from grass, trees and ragweed; dust; pet dander; mold; and smoke. Eye allergies may also be caused by perfumes, cosmetics or preservatives in eye drops, as well as specific foods or insect bites.

CATARACT SURGERY HAS BEEN SHOWN TO REDUCE THE RISK OF FALL
Falls are a leading cause of death and injury among older adults. About 1 in 3 falls occur in older people who wear bifocal or multifocal glasses. A new study showed that older adults who had cataract surgery were nearly 30% less likely than others to develop dementia.

HOW TO MANAGE YOUR EYE HEALTH IF YOU HAVE DIABETES
Diabetes can damage the heart, kidneys, and blood vessels, including those in the eye. To prevent eye damage from diabetes, maintain good control of your blood sugar. Follow your doctor's diet and exercise plan. If you have not had an eye exam with an ophthalmologist, it is crucial to have one now. Make sure to never skip the follow-up exams that your ophthalmologist recommends.
