Learning and Communication are deeply interconnected! LONG CAPTION
We learn to communicate through our interactions and observations of the environment, while we learn more about our environment and other topics by communicating with others.
Some context: I've been learning Japanese through an app for about 5 years now, nothing too serious, just picking up vocabulary, common phrases, and sentence structure. 1st time ko mag-Japan, and while learning a 1st language is different from learning more languages (considered your 2nd language), ang dami kong nakitang similar patterns in overall acquisition.
1. When picking up new words, the more associations I have, the more I retain them. Example: the Japanese word for "stairs" is "kaidan," and I thought how similar it sounded to our Tagalog "hagdan." This is a sound association. The symbol for "leather" in Kanji is ้ฉ and I think it looks just like a cow! This is a visual association. So think about what could help a child retain something you want to teach! (Eps. 54 & 55)
2. Real life practice: the quizzes and drills are very helpful as a foundation to 2nd language, but it's the regular use in daily situations that makes it easier to retrieve the words faster. When I 1st got here 2 weeks ago, para akong nag-blank, and it took me so long remember the words I knew. Pero with everyday "sumimasen" and "totemo oishii," everything else started to flow easier. (Neuroplasticity
https://youtube.com/shorts/M24fKFmH38c?) This is connected to...
3. Immersion: the more I hear the language around me, the more words I pick up, and nuances for appropriate situations.
4. Rewards: when I see locals delightfully surprised at my attempts at Nihongo, the more motivated and un-shy I became to keep trying. Rewards should be intrinsic - as in the successful communication attempt should be the reward in itself. Don't forget to respond well to all communication attempts!
5. Alternative communication is a MUST! When I ever felt stuck trying to express something, the Translator app or simply pointing at pictures were a lifesaver! I can imagine how frustrating it would be if I didn't have access to these!
Sayounara! โจ
Gentle Parenting doesn't mean we let the child do and decide everything: tayo pa rin ang nakakatanda, we are just being respectful about the manner by which we teach children about the world, and its safe and healthy boundaries.
Just because it was what you experienced, doesn't mean there are no other ways to do things. Let's not do things "just because" yun lang ang alam natin, o yun ang madali. Wala rin akong hinuhusgahan, naniniwala ako na we are all doing the best we can in this life; but the more we know, the more we grow. โจ
Some more factors: aside from speech delay, early exposure and excessive screen time can also contribute to shorter tempers. Learn more from these episodes:

E WHAT IF, di pala kayo maintindihan, and they're trying so hard to respond, but can't, or mali-mali?
Tandaan natin yan the next time na umiikli na ang pasensya natin. "They're not giving us a hard time; they're having a hard time."
P.S. Something to think about as we support our loved ones and clients โจ

Aphasia Awareness
Madalas natin makita sa mga palabas ang Amnesia, o kawalan ng memories kapag naaksidente o nagdanas ng malubhang kalagayan sa utak;
Here are some of the more important facts about this condition, and how we can support our loved ones (or clients) through recovery.
Hindi ko na naisama, pero isa pang tip na mahalaga: remember not to infantilize an adult with Aphasia - ang pagtrato sa kanilang parang bata, dahil mahirap na silang umintindi o makapagsalita. โ This can feel very degrading, and may become a factor for them to avoid commmunication. Yung mga videos na ni-recommend ko ay designed for kids, PERO the underlying techniques are the same. Please adjust them to your personal needs.
Do you know someone with Aphasia, or suspect that they do? Reach out to them, share this with their loved ones, to inspire love and hope. Let them know that they CAN relearn lost skills with lots of patience and practice โจ
Happy talking, MABUHAY!
"Still waters run deep."
Madaling paniwalaan na kapag hindi nakakapagsalita, ay wala ring naiintindihan;
but in my years of being a therapist, this has been disproven again and again.
If you want to know your children on a deeper level, PLAY with them.

"Malayo pa, pero malayo na"
I'm writing a progress report, and have been comprehensively reviewing my notes on one of my little girls.
I love playing with her because she is so creative, and with a BIG personality that insists on HER very specific interests and ways of doing things.
It's making me realize how much I'VE grown as a therapist, who used to push my own agenda onto kids, wanting them to play with MY presented toys, or play my games only in the ways I instructed. Wow, cringe!
That old style made it hard for me to connect with my clients, and sometimes I feel regretful, but now I'm just grateful to know better. โจ
I give myself that grace, and you should, too. If you've ever felt bad about how you used to do things, thinking it was the RIGHT way, it's never too late to change.
The love I feel from my kids now is one of the things that keeps me going in this difficult job (yes, it is fulfilling; but I have to be honest: it can be depleting!)
On one of the corners of my notes, I read something I scribbled down that the little girl said as she suddenly grabbed me by the shoulders, put her face an inch from mine and said, "Teacher, your eye is color... golden... brown."
Looking back to when I 1st met her 2 years ago, when nearly all her language consisted of lyrics of songs, wish I could tell her, "Oh, you make my soul feel golden brown." โจ
Importante ba talaga ang focus?
Learning only happens with awareness, attention, and focus.

What I wish more parents could see and understand about AAC:
It does NOT take away the potential for speech.
It does not mean giving up on a child's mouth words.
It means giving someone the power to communicate in ways that matter.
What is AAC?

One of the foundational concepts behind language acquisition, o kung paano matuto magcommunicate ang tao, is how much we EXPOSE them to words and gestures!
Kaya mo yan with PRACTICE!
Ready? Scroll through these common household items used during play, mealtimes, hygiene, and bedtime, and see what other words you can say about them!

โจ

Kapag napapansin naming hindi responsive ang bata, it could be because of Internal Distractors (gutom, masama ang pakiramdam, o may ibang iniisip) or External Distractors (may narinig, may napansin at gustong kalikutin, atbp.)
Pero hindi lang BATA ang nadidistract. KAHIT TAYONG ADULTS pwedeng ma-distract, and it affects our responsiveness, too;
and when we are the ones that children depend on to learn, kailangan bawasan natin ang ating distractions.
It sounds like a lot of pressure, and rightly so -- kasi sa atin nakasalalay ang kanilang development.
It takes INTENTION and PRACTICE. I believe in you!
Can you reflect on what YOUR distractions are?
Do they need URGENT attention, or can they be put off for later?

Maraming iba't ibang klaseng nanay,
Iba-iba ang paniniwala sa pagpapalaki ng bata,
Breastfeeding or bottle,
Stay-at-home or working, atbp.
โจ

You are not alone.
Both Win-Win situations.
Kaya nakakatuwa ang message na ito, kasi mukhang duda pa ang daddy noong una;
Your own progress becomes your own motivation.
You don't have to do it alone. I'm here to help.
I hope my tips and techniques can help:

Alam niyo ba ang "Million Word Gap?"
Kapag binasahan ng 1 libro araw-araw ang bata, mayroon silang narinig na higit-kumulang na 1.4 MILLION more words by 5 years old (kumpara sa mga hindi binabasahan)!

Keep up the good habits, and adjust to your child's needs, at tuloy-tuloy-tuloy na yan
Klaruhin ko lang: SCREENS in themselves are not bad; but when we use them, how we use them, and HOW MUCH.
Babies from 0-2 years old are discouraged from screen exposure, kasi halos wala pa silang benefits at this stage of life and learning (sensorimotor - total body experiences!)
Just rememeber: NOTHING is black or white in this world.
I believe in you โจ๏ธ and all those who decide to do better, usually get better results, too.
