Getting out a speck from your eyes that deliberately hurts, pulling out the needle from your arm after a dextrose bout in the hospital for days, easing out an impacted stool of your *** after a long constipation battle, having your ingrown done by your reliable pedicurist … what a sigh of relief there is. Our life is subjected to tumultuous specks and hecks of nature. Natural, normal, human. And as we humans go through some of it (hopefully one at a time) we can’t help but wish a sigh of relief would just come without delay. And it does. Somehow in different ways, but it does. Some after a while, some almost an instant.

I sometimes marvel at the idea that there are people around us that can “bear” some loads that looked like they have accepted the fact that nothing can take it away from them. Physical handicaps, ailments of various sorts, plight in life, etc. But have they really accepted it and given up the idea that someday a sigh of relief would rescue them, somehow, somewhere?

Most of us are privileged to have been recipients of blessings that even us cannot believe we even deserve any of these. Maybe as recipients of grace we can also be a tool or channel of blessing to more unfortunate ones out there. Money, time, an encouraging word, anything.

At times when sales in our store drops significantly I and my business partner would always go around and shop. For all you know these shops need sales from us too. And we laughed as we shopped. We rationalized: If we don’t get a blessing, be a blessing. Though I don’t believe that there is such a thing as “getting no blessing” It is the same blesser to everyone.

Sometimes we are torn between helping or not helping children asking for dole-outs while traffic lights are red on the road. For fear that they might be members of syndicates plying the street of the city and when you give, these alms may not end up to them. Sampaguita vendors pestering us with an otherwise fragrant and beautiful flowers as we ended up not buying thinking the parents are just using their children for their sake. I was wondering what sigh of relief will these humans feel if we had given in. Did we ever give? We chose to follow the law. We chose not to for reasons we actually understand, but is it really a big deal? Whatever position on these issues is, I always believe that there is a chance for us to help. Besides any material thing anyone could give to those in need, a sincere prayer might go a long, long way. Give something that hurts and costs you anyway.
