Celebrating life after kidney transplant 26/08/2024

“Let us salute and hold in high esteem all kidney transplant patients who have inspired others, as well as all kidney donors — THE REAL HEROES — who have shared their lives and made miracles possible out of desolation, and given their recipients a meaningful existence.” - Dra. Rose Marie O. Rosete-Liquete, Head of Human Organ Preservation Effort - NKTI

Celebrating life after kidney transplant According to Dr. Rose Marie O. Rosete-Liquete, the prominent kidney transplant surgeon, the earliest “transplant” experience she had was in her childhood days in South Cotabato when her father, a doctor farmer, exposed them every Sunday after Mass to planting, propagating and transplanti...

YOUR KIDNEYS ARE NOT FOR SALE! 🫵

As we acknowledge the "World Day Against Trafficking in Persons", we honor our Filipino identity and integrity. It is not in novelty that our culture knows more about the misinformation about Organ Donation, and as we work to combat wrong information, we also seek your support to help other people be advocated about true altruism and the act of generosity. Organ Donation is a Gift of Life, a noble way to save lives and leave a legacy that embarks heroism in our community.

NON-ENGAGEMENT to illegal and unethical "organ donation" is a great advocacy to give light to the real image of ORGAN DONATION in our country, for both Living and Deceased Organ Donation.

The real stories about love, sacrifice, and the gift of altruism must also be emphasized, rather than the limelight of organ trafficking.

OFFICIAL LAUNCH: 📢
2024 VIDEO-MAKING CONTEST FOR DECEASED ORGAN DONATION PROGRAM ADVOCACY CAMPAIGN

Human Organ Preservation Effort’s vision is to make vast opportunities for more Filipinos to be well-versed about Deceased Organ Donation. And with the celebration of the National Kidney Month which promote individuals to adhere concerns on renal care and renal diseases, apart from these are the advocacies to promote transplantations through the gift of life of the deceased organ donation program.

On the other hand, miniscule portion of the population only are aware of this program and unfortunately, it is possible that in our country that less of this portion might be willing to participate in the donation per se. As cited in the research on Perceptions and Attitudes Towards Organ Donation Among People Seeking Healthcare in Tertiary Care Centers of Coastal South India (Mithra et al,. 2013) that; It is apparent from the study that though there was high level of awareness about organ donation, a high proportion of the participants did not have positive attitudes towards organ donation.

Therefore, the campaign for the Deceased Organ Donation Program must exceed from the norm of practicing this campaign. Our agenda is to make known of the program nationwide and maximize the advanced resources such as creative videos that can be visualized by most Filipino communities through social medias and public vicinities. Furthermore, the campaign for this program requires more exposures, and through this, the more that we heighten our campaigns, the more that people will be aware that may heighten the numbers of consents as we nurture the innate Bayanihan perception of most Filipinos.

Join our campaign, win awesome HOPE merchandises, and a chance to be featured in our awareness campaigns. The winning video will be used as the primary campaign tool for advocacies in regions 2,3,4-A and 4-B, in community, hospital, university and social media campaigns using the official hashtag .

Declaration of Winners is on June 28, 2024
at the 2024 NKTI National Kidney Month – Closing Ceremony

See you there! 📢

Let's share our lives with others! ♥️

The new year 🎉 allowed us to look back from 2023 consent and retrieval data from the Deceased Organ Donation Program. From its year's restless responses and rounds from hospital to hospital around the metro, the Human Organ Preservation Effort has successfully attained a total of 17 Actual Deceased Organ Donors from its actual number of 32 consents. Within this as well, HOPE have thrivingly consented to 17 families for corneal donation which saved dreams of people with corneal blindness. Added to this are 4 successful Liver Transplantations and 4 triumphant simulations for heart and lungs retrievals in coordination with the Philippine Heart Center and Lung Center of the Philippines.

For the past years (2019-2023), 🎗️Human Organ Preservation Effort have continuously and persistently aimed to heighten the number of consents. And despite the stigma and wrong connotation for organ donation in the country, the team is courageous to face this year's challenge to achieve more victorious consents; turning tragedies to legacies, serving the people through an innovative way of giving through altruism, and spreading hope through multi-organ and tissue donation.

We don't know how strong we people are until being strong is the only choice we have. Choosing to help our fellow Filipino men through this gift of life is also choosing acceptance of death and also heroic deeds to mankind. ✨

Through dedication and passion for service, the Deceased Organ Donation Program in the Philippines is becoming more and more efficient and reliable on building resilience and strong hope for our patients on the waiting list for organ transplantation. In comparison from the data of actual deceased organ donors in year 2022, we have almost reached the same numbers by just July of 2023 in NKTI. This signifies that those planted seeds from the previous efforts are now growing and even blooming as to touch more families towards genuine altruism.

Becoming an advocate comes from different angles, yet the greatest advocacy we can offer to mankind is sharing ourselves to our race. To surpass the stigma for organ donation as to reach the beautiful concept of sacrificial donation can be both painful and healing at the same time. Nevertheless, new lives are saved, dreams are reborn, and faith restored to humanity.

Join us to spread the mission where more Filipinos will be willing to contribute to the highest form of giving - organ donation. And when this happens, truly that there is hope.

Our Story

The Human Organ Preservation Effort (HOPE) is a non-profit organization in the Philippines under the umbrella of the National Kidney & Transplant Institute, dedicated to the legal procurement of donor organs for transplantation to patients afflicted with various types of end-stage organ disease. The effort concentrates mostly on donors who have been declared brain dead with otherwise normal organs.

There are two types of donors, the living-related donor and the cadaver donor. The living-related donor (LRD) is a blood relative of the patient who willingly donates one of his or her organs without any corresponding danger to the donor's life or any alteration in his usual physical activities. Organs that can be donated through the LRD route are one kidney, bone marrow and part of the liver if the recipient is a child.

The deceased organ donor (DOD) is someone who is unrelated to the patient who suffered injury by trauma or disease to the brain, destroying the upper brain functions (which house a person's personality and stock of knowledge, and for all intents and purposes, his very being) leaving the brain stem or vegetative functions (which involuntarily control a person's breathing, heart, and other life-sustaining functions) intact.

Because of the Philippines' deep family ties, religious devotion and superstitious/traditional beliefs, the number of deceased donor retrieval is dismally low. To help relatives make the decision to donate, the Organ Donor Card project was started. Although not the equivalent of a legal consent document at the present time, it can help the relatives realize that the donor has consented beforehand and that his wishes be respected.
