Announcement from the UP Diliman (UPD) Office of the Chancellor:
In view of the concerns raised by the UPD University Student Council regarding extreme heat in Metro Manila in the coming days, faculty members whose class activities may be done online are requested to consider shifting to remote and/or asynchronous modes of learning during extreme heat conditions.
The Association of Computing Machinery - UP Diliman (UP ACM) is hosting the finals of ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐: ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐, this April 6 at the UP Alumni Engineers Centennial Hall (UP AECH).
Now in its 11th year, ALGOLYMPICS is a collegiate programming competition open to all undergraduate students in the Philippines. The contest takes place in two parts: (1) an online elimination round held last February 16-26 and (2) the in-person final round. This would be the first face-to-face iteration of the finals since the pandemic.
The online round of ALGOLYMPICS listed over 231 participants forming 77 teams. The top 20 teams among them qualified to the finals, which will be held on April 6, 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM at the Accenture Room in UP AECH. Aside from the contest proper, the event will also stage a practice round for contestants to warm up and hold talks from partner companies.
For more information, you may check the ALGOLYMPICS FAQ at https://algolympics.upacm.net/2024/faq/, or the UP ACM page at https://www.facebook.com/upacm

This comes after user reports of historical and factual inaccuracies in its image outputs, which includes Native and African American U.S. Founding Fathers, a female Pope, and dark-skinned Vikings.
According to Google Senior Vice President Prabhakar Raghavan, Google took steps to avoid the flaws that were observed with past image generators. This includes a lack of diversity in prompts that ask for a vague or generic type of person (e.g. โa cookโ, โa teacherโ).
However, they failed to account for prompts that ask for people with specific physical characteristics (e.g. โa German cookโ, โa Black teacherโ). In other words, they did not consider prompts that should not show diversity.
It was also observed that the image generator would refuse โanodyneโ prompts such as protest movements (e.g. the Arab Spring, George Floyd protests, 1989 Tiananmen Square protests) to avoid the โtrivialization of sensitive topicsโ or the โspread of misinformationโ.
Google is now taking action to correct the problem, vowing to relaunch Geminiโs image generator in a few weeks.

Last February 5, 2024, a team of MIT researchers published a study showing how AI assistance could boost the accuracy of skin disease diagnosis across skin tones.
The team recruited more than 1,000 medical professionals from 39 countriesโincluding board-certified dermatologists, general practitioners, and other types of doctorsโto diagnose 364 images varying in skin shades that cover 46 skin diseases. They found that images with dark skin received less accurate diagnoses.
Then, two versions of a deep learning system (DLS) trained on 30,000 images, with 47% and 84% accuracy each, helped the doctors examine another set of images. These two models contributed in assessing if AI accuracy would influence their evaluations.
The study revealed that both dermatologists and general practitioners had higher accuracy with access to the DLS. Additionally, they rarely accepted suggestions by the AI that had already been eliminated by themselves.
Dr. Matt Groh, the paperโs senior author, has an interest in human-AI collaboration and was inspired by another MIT study, which found that facial-analysis programs frequently mispredict gender of darker skinned individuals.
Groh wanted to identify bias and difficulties of AI models, as well as doctors themselves, concerning skin diagnosis, and analyze whether partnership between physicians and machines enriches decision-making for diverse patients.

Here are some reminders and things to know on how we can show our love and solidarity to our Muslim community members in the Department of Computer Science, as well as the wider University community.
Muslims observe Ramadan by fasting, i.e., abstaining from food, drink, sexual activity, and sinful behavior, during daytime for 30 days.
This means no food and no food or drink from approximately 4 AM to 6 PM.
Muslim students likely will be exhausted, hungry, and dehydrated especially during the hot climate nowadays. Please do not tire them so much either physically, emotionally, or mentally.
๐. ๐๐ฉ๐๐๐ ๐๐จ๐ซ ๐๐ซ๐๐ฒ๐๐ซ
Since there is yet to be a permanent prayer room for Muslims, please allow your Muslim friend to seek space for prayer in the building or place you find yourself in.
If you encounter a Muslim praying, please observe respect by maintaining silence and not passing near in front of them.
๐. ๐๐๐ฌ๐ฉ๐๐๐ญ ๐๐จ๐ซ ๐๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐
Please do not joke nor tempt them with food and drink during daytime. Moreover, do not anger them because fasting includes abstaining from anger.
For the exact time, your Muslim friend would know the exact minute they are allowed to eat and drink. In general, food and drink are allowed around before 4 AM and around after 6 PM.
In the allowable times, please do invite them for food or join them when they invite you for food!

Researchers at Amazon claim they have made an AI model that displays โemergentโ capabilities in text-to-speech generation.
The Amazon Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) team, in a yet-to-be-peer-reviewed paper, made what they claim to be the biggest text-to-speech (TTS) model at present called BASE-TTS โ โBig Adaptive Streamable TTS with Emergent abilities.โ It was trained on Spanish and English audio data.
The team at Amazon created three versions of BASE-TTS based on size. BASE-small is trained on 1,000 hours of audio data with 150 million parameters. Next, BASE-medium is with 10,000 hours of data with 400-million parameters. Lastly, BASE-large is with 100,000 hours of data with 980-million parameters.
The reason why they made three versions based on size of the data and the parameters is because they wanted to see if the scale of either the data or the parameters of the model, or both, mattered. They found that scale had an important effect.
Past a certain size, the AI model displays emergent capabilities โ the text-to-speech model feels more โnatural.โ
The 10,000-hour model, BASE-medium, was the sweet spot for the emergence-abilities checklist that the Amazon AGI team had. The larger 100,000-hour model with almost a billion parameters experienced a continuing but diminishing return on improvement.
In all sizes of BASE-TTS, emotions and paralinguistics remain the most challenging task. Paralinguistics is the aspect of spoken communication that does not involve words โ such as volume, speed, intonation, etc. Furthermore, their model occasionally produces โhallucinations or cutoffs, โฆ extra or incomplete audio than intended by the text.โ
On the ethics of their model, the researchers promote that their model provides opportunities to โenhance user experiences and support under-resourced languages.โ A particular application is to create synthetic voices for mute people, subject to informed consensus and data privacy reviews. The researchers decided against open-sourcing their model because of potential misuse. They acknowledge that their data may produce bias.
All in all, the researchers stated that their AI text-to-speech model is โthe largest model of its kind known to us, both in terms of parameters and training data.โ They conclude that their middle-size model, trained with 10,000 hours of data and 400 million parameters, started to exhibit an โadvanced grasp of text.โ
