There was something wrong in the world and theater has fixed it—you’re welcome! 🧪👩🏻🔬
MusicArtes, Inc.’s The Half-Life of Marie Curie begins with an expectation of gratitude, and deservedly so. The play, written by Lauren Gunderson and directed into the Filipino stage by Kiara Pipino, is a witty and vulnerable 90-minute dissection of sisterhood, sexism, and science in a not-so-distant past, the remnants of which remain in the DNA of today. 🧠🧬

Why does our best friend and lover have to be separate people when they could be one and the same? 👫💕
The classic question of whether your best friend can also be your lover simmers beneath the surface of the beloved 90s Filipino film, “Labs Kita…Okey Ka Lang?” This Pinoy classic delves into the friends-to-lovers trope, a concept that thrives on the complications that arise when platonic affection blossoms into romantic feelings. Unlike love-at-first-sight stories, this trope unfolds gradually, taking the viewer through a gamble where the potential reward of love outweighs the fear of losing a friend. 🎲

You have 8 DAYS LEFT to submit works for the first issue of HEIGHTS’ 72nd regular folio with the theme, “Defiance”.
Micah Rimando’s “Hubad na (Katotohanan)” confronts the current state of Philippine politics by portraying Ferdinand Marcos Jr. as a statue, with his face juxtaposed on the body of Michelangelo’s David. Using photo manipulation, it defies the historical revisionism done by our current leaders to attain their positions of power. It recontextualizes the image of David, who triumphantly killed Goliath with just a slingshot. Ironically, it does not exemplify Marcos’s fabricated image to the Filipino people as a hero; instead, it calls on the viewer to consider the truth stripped down and bare—defying how Filipinos should examine our own government leaders.
Atenean students, instructors, alumni, and staff of the Higher Education Cluster are welcome to submit their works until August 31, 2024. Read the full statement here: bit.ly/HEIGHTSTomo72Blg1CFCs

ICYMI: Last August 14, the Confederation of Publications (COP) transformed SOM 111 into a hub of storytelling power with their event, “The Power of Narratives: Combatting the Weaponized Pen”.
Celine Samson, head of VERA Files’ online verification team, delved into the pivotal role that narratives play in shaping public consciousness, sharing her experiences as a journalist and fact-checker in the current sociopolitical landscape.
Afterward, a roundtable discussion was conducted with HEIGHTS’ Editor-in-Chief (EIC) Ysabella Zureta, The GUIDON’s EIC Lourence Segovia, Matanglawin Ateneo’s Punong Patnugot Lance Arevada, and Samson. They emphasized the vital duty of principled and fearless campus journalism, addressing questions from a passionate audience of first-year students eager to grasp the essential responsibilities and challenges of reporting within the academic community.
To end the event, the COP moderated a workshop wherein the audience noted common misleading narratives of prevalent issues. Following this, they provided counternarratives to combat the weaponized pen, thereby witnessing the power of narratives.
This event was an activity organized by the COP for this year's COA RecWeek.

You have 10 DAYS LEFT to submit works for the first issue of HEIGHTS’ 72nd regular folio with the theme, “Defiance”.
“Frivolous Words and the World” by Lawrence Lacambra Ypil was originally delivered as a speech for the freshman batch of Creative Writing majors in 2006. In rejecting the common impression of writing as a passive and leisurely endeavor, Ypil advances his notion of writing as an act of rupturing the line between private and public life. Though almost two decades later, his words resonate deeply in a time when it is more difficult than ever to reckon with the world we live in and who we are in the midst of it. Art, particularly writing, when used as a means of engaging the private self with the social sphere, is inherently an act of resistance. The role of literature in society is challenged most in trying times. Thus, it is now that we must ask ourselves—how must language serve its duty?
If there was ever a time that we asked if we could write only for ourselves, the answer lies before us now. We have never, and can never, live in isolation from one another. In the same sense that writing is an act of defiance, it is just as much an offering. It is the means of uniting an ecosystem in which what matters to one, matters to all.
Atenean students, instructors, alumni, and staff of the Higher Education Cluster are welcome to submit their works until August 31, 2024. Read the full statement here: bit.ly/HEIGHTSTomo72Blg1CFCs

Parenthood is the art of turning life’s chaos into a beautiful story. 🖼️
The child who creates pictures on the wall is also the child who destroys their parents’ hard work by leaving hard-to-remove marks everywhere. Thus, parents have learned to be wary of their children’s creativity, limiting it to paper and canvas. “Color inside the line,” they tell their children, and their children obey. 🖍️
