On September 29, we ditch the chocolates, roses, and teddy bears that usually symbolize matters of the heart. Let us go beyond its figurative essence and focus on giving love to the powerhouse of our circulatory system that keeps us alive every day: our real heart, this World Heart Day.
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) encompass diseases affecting the heart's and the blood vesselsโ normal functioning. These include a wide array of conditions, such as coronary artery disease, myocardial infarction, rheumatic heart disease, and cerebrovascular accident. These diseases negatively impact not only the individuals affected, but also their families, communities, and healthcare systems, underscoring the importance of prevention.
However, we can still work together as prevention is within reach. The most common and modifiable risk factor among all CVDs is lifestyle, which includes a poor diet (especially one high in fat and sodium), inadequate exercise, excessive smoking, and immoderate drinking. Through simple changes in oneโs daily routines, such as a heart-healthy diet rich in vegetables, fruits, and food high in omega-3 fatty acids, simple and regular exercise like walking, and avoiding the abovementioned harmful habits, we can drastically decrease our chances of developing CVDs.
World Heart Day is an initiative by the World Heart Federation in collaboration with the World Heart Organization to put emphasis on the importance of taking care of our cardiovascular health. Through spreading awareness and knowledge about CVDs, including its prevention and impact, we will be able to initiate change in peopleโs lifestyles. These changes, big or small, shall positively impact their attitude and behavior towards their bodies, especially their hearts.
Considering such, let us all take a moment to reflect on how we can better take care of ourselves, put our heart's health into our minds, and encourage the people around us to do the same.
Love your heart, and it will love you back.๐ซ

In September, we unite with a single heart and purpose: to commemorate the lives touched by Alzheimer's disease on World Alzheimer's Month.
Alzheimer's disease, a neurological disorder that causes brain cells to degenerate and die, leads to a progressive decline in memory, thinking, and behavior. It is the most common cause of dementia, a general term for memory loss and cognitive decline that interferes with one's daily life. Early symptoms of the disease include difficulty remembering recent events, confusion, and changes in mood or personality. As the disease continues to worsen, individuals may struggle with language, orientation, and performing routine tasks, eventually requiring full assistance.
Millions of people worldwide, particularly older adults, are affected by Alzheimer's disease, and the World Health Organization projects that the prevalence of dementia in the Philippines will rise to 1,159,000 by 2050. As life expectancy continues to increase in the country, so does Alzheimer's disease prevalence in Filipinos. However, awareness regarding the condition remains low, and the stigma revolving around it makes matters worse. Among other factors, these often lead to a delay in diagnosis and inadequate access to appropriate care, burdening the individual with the disease and their family.
In the Philippines, where family ties are strong and deeply valued, recognizing the early signs of Alzheimer's not only enables timely intervention but also allows families to better prepare and unite in providing care and support for their loved ones. Through increased awareness and education, we can break down the barriers of stigma and fear that often surround dementia, ensuring those affected do not face the journey alone. Additionally, supporting research around the condition is crucial for understanding its causes, developing effective treatments, and, ultimately, finding a cure.
As such, we must advocate for research, offer empathy to families, and work towards a future where Alzheimer's is better understood and managed. Together, we can build a world that remembers to care for those who forget.

The 17th of September marks โWorld Patient Safety Day,โ where we celebrate life and the decades of global healing that stand the test of time โ honoring our forefathers who came before us while continuing the legacy of their undying persistence to safeguard the generations of humanityโs healthy existence. The world is a blank canvas where each of the 7 billion paints a kaleidoscope of stories arising from their health conditions and how it slowly shaped the healthcare system into a sacred home of holistic healing forever.
A focus on raising awareness about patient safety must involve healthcare providers, policymakers, patients, and the general public in lobbying policies and maximizing resources to establish growth in terms of collaborations and partnerships, education and leadership training, research and treatment advancements, and empowerment of patients and families while advocating for their safety.
Following such actions, may everyone be effective communicators, collaborators, and advocates of both safety and patient rights to minimize medication errors, improve infection control, and increase emergency preparedness. Hence, let our continuous collective effort materialize the empathy embedded in our innate ability, as with the importance of the human touch to immortalize this cause of saving lives: our shared responsibility.

On the 15th of September, we unite on a cause of great significance to celebrate and raise awareness about โWorld Lymphoma Awareness Day,โ an event dedicated to a type of blood cancer that continues to affect a growing population of millions globally. Moreover, cancer-related stigma encumbers the path to recovery and underscores the shackles that impede health-seeking behaviors, ultimately leading to delays or, worse, a cycle of neglect.
Lymphoma is a detrimental condition that affects the lymphatic โimmuneโ system, marked by the abnormal growth of lymphocytes, a white blood cell commonly responsible for fighting disease and safeguarding the body from infection. Subsequently, tumor formation is followed by organ enlargement and greatly impairs the normal physiologic process of the lymphatic system leading to a myriad of symptoms. When left untreated, it affects the body full circle โ a direct physical toll on the body and indirect mental, emotional, and financial burdens that add to the silent battle.
Appropriate treatment, made possible through advancement and breakthroughs in research, will lead to better health outcomes and provide greater chances of remission and recovery. Early detection is then necessary to preserve a healthy state of health and deviate from the various adverse effects that follow. As future healthcare professionals, we are crucial in disseminating reliable health information and advocating for lymphoma awareness to build bridges of understanding and acceptance of our propensity to illness: our shared humanity. In retrospect, being human means also being vulnerable. We might not have an illness-free world, but we can illness-proof it through our capacities as health advocates and researchers.
With this knowledge, we can confidently say,
Humanity is undivided on World Lymphoma Day.
