The Philippine Society of Digestive Endoscopy recently concluded the BEST Lower GI Train-the Trainers and Trainees Workshop held from April 21 to 23. This unique endoscopy skills training integrates mastery learning, deliberate practice, and informative feedback through simulation.
This successful initiative is the result of the tireless effort of our PSDE Basic and Advanced Endoscopy Training Committee (BAET) and the effective collaboration with the Academy of Endoscopy, led by Prof. Roy Soetikno. We extend our gratitude to the rest of the esteemed foreign faculty who joined us this year: Prof. Tonya Kaltenbach, Prof. Hasan Maulahela, Dr. Yung Ka Chin, Dr. Wen-Feng Hsu, and Mr. Yasuhisa Abe, as well as our local faculty: Dr. Patricia Cabral-Prodigalidad, Dr. Mark de Lusong, Dr. Eric Yasay, Dr. Carlos Francisco, Dr. Enrik Aguila, Dr. Ruter Maralit, and Dr. Jonard Co. This endeavor likewise owes its success to the active and enthusiastic involvement of trainer participants from 19 GI training institutions and their fellows-in-training. Our trainees are indeed privileged to benefit from the knowledge and expertise shared by the BEST team during the workshop.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to the success of this workshop, including the secretariat, technical team, endoscopy staff, sponsors, and industry partners who ensured everything ran smoothly.
Finally, we express our gratitude for the partnership extended by the Philippine Society of Gastroenterology and the St. Luke's Medical Center - BGC, Institute of Digestive and Liver Diseases, both led by Dr. Ian Homer Cua, for making this event highly anticipated.
We are optimistic that this activity will have a lasting impact, reshaping how we teach and practice endoscopy, one workshop at a time. Looking forward to seeing you again next year!

For GI Fellows-in-Training,
The Philippine Society of Digestive Endoscopy (PSDE), a Component Society of the Philippine Society of Gastroenterology (PSG), in its mission to improve the standards of digestive endoscopy in our country, is proud to announce the Basic Endoscopy Skills Training (BEST) Workshop on September 30, 2023 to October 1, 2023 at the St. Luke’s Medical Center Global City. This highly anticipated workshop is held annually in collaboration with the Academy of Endoscopy, an international group of well-renowned endoscopy experts and educators led by American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) Master Endoscopist Awardee, Professor Roy Soetikno. This year, equally renowned experts from the St. Luke’s Medical Center, the UP- Philippine General Hospital, the Chinese General Hospital and Medical Center and the East Avenue Medical Center will complete the high-caliber faculty roster.
Focusing on the expert-performance approach, this innovative program utilizes evidence-based concepts of simulation-based mastery learning to provide high-quality instruction. Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a hands-on skills training experience that combines active learning methods with deliberate practice and informative feedback. Within the two-day workshop, young endoscopists will be able to acquire and refine their skills in basic diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, at par with global standards.
