🍎 Are you having a hard time taking out the TV or gadgets at mealtimes?
Choose: Cold turkey or baby steps?
Reframing how we respond to our students can change the dynamic a lot!
My first recommendation to parents of late talkers: try using sign language or pictures to help them communicate! It supports VERBAL language. And in my personal experience, I have noticed many younger kids who are verbal learn words quicker when it is paired with a sign!
Please be informed.
Link: https://youtu.be/edMPKOfkRBM

I know you care about it. Huwag natin ipawalang bahala na lang ang kapakanan ng mga bata.
I will say this over and over! Are there flash cards, apps, and toys that can help kids learn? Absolutely! But- kids will learn SO MUCH MORE when they are engaging with others during those activities - and when it comes to language, I really believe they can learn even more through good old fashioned play with another person- regardless of what toys or objects are involved!
“But, they are just playing” - I hear this all the time, and not just about speech therapy! And YES we are playing, but I would never say “just” playing bc we all know this is how children best learn. It’s also important to know that interventionist are trained in specific developmental skills and techniques for their specific discipline - so if we are doing a good enough job to where the adult thinks it’s “just play”, the child will definitely buy in and most likely play - AND LEARN along!
Speech Therapy is so often misunderstood- we do SO MUCH MORE than helping kids initially start talking and/or fixing “R” errors. We work on a variety of communication skills, so yes- kids who talk can still need speech!

I have a HUGE ANNOUNCEMENT!! I am seriously in slp nerd land! Next Friday on my page, two of the top researchers studying genetics and CAS will be zooming with me and .geek talking all about genetics and CAS! This is such invaluable information for SLP’s and parents! I cannot wait!!
Ok, so I have taken a bit of a break on my “Don’t Wait” message that I normally scream from the rooftops - due to COVID. But, as we adjust to this new normal, it’s time to get back to my message of early evaluation and intervention. Is admitting and accepting your child is delayed hard and scary? Absolutely. But- getting early interventions and therapy for your child WILL SET THEM UP FOR SUCCESS because it gives them the opportunity to decrease the gap before it’s so big! This infographic shows why it’s best to start at first signs of a delay- rather than waiting to see if they can catch up on their own! Even though it’s very possible for kids to catch up on their own, and many do- it’s also true that many do not and continue to have delays and need for intervention for many years. *these are average numbers of words per age, and the range of typical is huge- so do not panic if your child is not right at the average 🙂

Children and Excessive Use of Gadgets
By Juviel Cruz
Parents, we have a question for you. Have you ever experienced any of the following situations with your child?
1) Your child throws tantrums every time you get the phone he is using and the only solution to calm him down is to give it back.
2) Your child is having a hard time focusing on her school work. You see that she takes more time than necessary to finish a simple homework, and her teacher reports that she is unable to finish exams on time because she keeps on getting distracted. However, you notice that she can finish at least three videos of her favorite cartoon without getting distracted.
3) Your child is already two years old but only communicates through pointing at the things he is interested in. He does not speak, not even one word like “mama” or “papa.” He also likes to watch cartoons that have no dialogue.
4) Your child hits her sibling/s when they fight. When you ask her if what she did was right, she would answer, “Yes, because I am a superhero, and I should punch all the bad guys!”
If your answer to any of the following questions is yes, then you may want to re-evaluate the amount of time your child spends with a gadget.
