The UP Department of Food Science and Nutrition extends its warm congratulations to Mr. Adrianne Fritz Parra, an alumna of the BS in Food Technology program, for being awarded the Best Presenter award at the 13th International and National Seminar on Fisheries and Marine Science (ISFM XIII) on September 12, 2024. The event was facilitated by the faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science of the University of Riau, Indonesia.

The UP Department of Food Science and Nutrition proudly congratulates Ms. Abigail Ann Ching, a graduate of the BS Food Technology program, who was awarded Best Presenter last September 12, 2024, at the 13th International and National Seminar on Fisheries and Marine Science in Pekanbaru, Indonesia.
Ms. Ching, a licensed Professional Food Technologist, presented her thesis on the post-harvest practices of small-scale fisherfolk in Rosario, Cavite, Philippines, focusing on the physicochemical and microbiological properties of tuyo. Her research identified gaps in traditional methods and highlighted improvements for safer fish processing, which garnered recognition at the seminar.

Representatives from the UP Diliman College of Home Economics including Dean Shirley V. Guevarra (presenting the paper of her thesis advisee, Andrea Salem), four faculty members (Dr. Maria Leonora dL Francisco, Dr. Myrna Benita Z. Luna, Dr. Rowena Grace R. Sanchez, and Dr. Casiana Blanca J. Villarino) from the UP Department of Food Science and Nutrition, and MS Food Science graduate student, Samantha Kathryna V. Katigbak, presented scienti๏ฌc posters and oral papers at the 22nd World Congress of Food Science and Nutrition in Rimini, Italy, from September 8 to 12, 2024. The event, themed โThe Future of Food is Now: Development, Functionality & Sustainability,โ attracted over 1,500 scientists and stakeholders globally. It covered essential topics in food science and technology, such as nutrition, consumer science, product development, food safety, new processes and technologies, functional foods, meat analogues, analytical methods, and sustainability.
Additionally, Dr. Luna and Dr. Sanchez conducted benchmarking activities with the University of Milanโs Department of Food, Environmental and Nutritional Sciences (DeFENS) before the congress. They gathered details about the department and its degree programs, toured teaching and research facilities, and engaged with faculty and administrators. The milestones and resources presented by DeFENS, including faculty pro๏ฌles, cross-disciplinary programs, publication outputs, research grants, patents, and partnerships, were impressive, and there was a strong willingness to collaborate with UP Diliman.

The UP Department of Food Science and Nutrition attended the 2024 Oath-Taking Ceremony of the newly licensed Professional Food Technologists held last October 3, 2024, at the PICC, Pasay.
The DFSN also held a testimonial activity last October 5, 2024, for the success of the recently concluded Food Technology Licensure Exam. The activity was joined by the passers, faculty members of the DFSN, students, and staff with the unwavering support of the UP Diliman College of Home Economics Dean Shirley V. Guevarra.

We are very excited to share with you this much awaited announcement, especially if you missed attending the WOW! event. The first recipient of the Corazon Veron Cruz Barba Excellence Award 2024 is none other than, Demetria Cabrera Bongga, RND, Ph.D!
Dr. Bongga is a well respected Nutritionist-Dietitian. Like Dr. Barba, her career in nutrition spans more than 4 decades, and even during her retirement she continues to mentor, and provide technical expertise for the improvement of nutritional well-being of the Filipino People.
Dr. Bongga was a professor of Nutrition, served as Dean of the College of Home Economics, and Vice Chancellor for Research and Development at UP Diliman. She also served as Deputy Executive Director for Technical Services at the National Nutrition Council, spearheading the LAKASS project, which promoted both nutrition specific and nutrition-sensitive interventions for addressing the malnutrition problem in selected nutritionally depressed municipalities in the Philippines, and introduced the concept of โintegrating nutrition consideration in agriculture and rural development (INCARD) programsโ. She was consultant to government agencies including the Department of Health, Department of Science and Technology, Commission on Higher Education, the academe, and international organizations including the FAO, WHO, UNICEF, and USAID.
Her work has focused on maternal health, infant and child nutrition, micronutrient deficiencies, nutrition education and nutrition labelling, food fortification, nutritional supplementation, food habits and food consumption just to name a few. Her contribution to the field of nutrition has influenced both policy development and implementation that helped the country address problems of underweight and micronutrient deficiencies.
Well recognized by both local and international award giving bodies, she was recipient of The Francisco O. Santos Memorial Award (2017); Presentacion T. Perez Award, given by the Nutritionist-Dietitiansโ Association of the Philippines (2005); Award of Recognition given by The Netherlands Fellows Foundation of the Philippines, Inc., in 2003; she was Outstanding Nutritionist-Dietitian of the Year given by the Professional Regulations Commission in1995; Nutritionist-Dietitian of the Year 1991 given by the NDAP, in 1992; โFellow" Award For Achievement in Nutrition Education and Training given by the Philippine Association of Nutrition in 1987.
Dr. Bongga is a true leader in the RND profession, setting an example of high standard of professionalism, dedicated service, humility, and dedication to the profession!
Aside from a plaque of recognition, Dr. Bongga will receive 50,000PHP cash prize from SEARCA Endowment Fund 2024.

QUALIFICATIONS:
โข Must be a bona fide freshman student of the University of the Philippines Diliman;
โข Must be enrolled in BS Food Technology;
โข Must have obtained a general weighted average of "2.50" or better and must have carried a load of at least 15 units with no grade of "5.0" or unremoved "4.0" or "Inc." in the semester immediately preceding the application;
โข Must be enrolled in at least 15 units at the time of the award of the grant;
โข Must not be a recipient of any scholarship grant;
โข Must be financially needy, parents' annual gross income must not exceed P500,000.00; and
โข Must not have been the subject of any disciplinary action.
BENEFITS:

The UP Department of Food Science and Nutrition congratulates the students and their respective thesis advisers who participated in the 50th Department of Science and Technologyโs Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI) Seminar Series Undergraduate Research Competition last July 3-4, 2024 held at Sheraton Hotel, Pasay City, Metro Manila.

The UP Pilot Food Plant and Food Innovation Facility will be holding a 3-day webinar on thermal processing covering theoretical key concepts such as food microbiology, food plant sanitation, container closures and relevant thermal process calculations.
The training will be held on June 07,14 and 21, 2024 from 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM via Zoom geared towards people from the food industry that would like to have a refresher course on thermal processing. Certificates will be given to those who can complete the three (3) day training.
