For our 14th Memory Project in commemoration of International Human Rights Day, the Concerned Artists of the Philippines (CAP) and the Commission on Human Rights (CHR), with the UP FIlm Institute (UPFI) and the PUP Center for Heritage Studies (CHS), will screen "The Politics of Detention" (c. 1984), a short documentary film on the political prisoners in the Philippines: their predicament, condition, and struggle for justice during the latter years of the Marcos dictatorship, and "River of Tears and Rage" (2021), a short documentary focusing on the death of a three-month-old infant of a women's rights activist amidst a raging coronavirus pandemic that became a symbol of political repression by a regime denounced worldwide for its crimes against the people.

The screening will be followed by a talkback with Fides Lim, KAPATID spokesperson, who will talk about the plight of political prisoners; Joseph Cuevas, former political prisoner and cinematographer of River of Tears and Rage; Lisa Ito-Tapang, CAP secretary general, who will speak about politically detained artists and their art ; and Atty. Ephraim Cortez, National Union of People's Lawyers (NUPL) secretary general, who will discuss about terrorist tagging and the Manila Regional Trial Court Judge Marlo Malagar decision. They will be joined by Rosemarie Roque of PUP CHS and Franco Brobio of CAP Research and Education Committee (R/Ed) as moderators.

This event is open to the public for free on a first-come, first-served basis. Bring your proof of vaccination & wear your face masks. No eating and drinking inside the theater. Registration starts at 2pm at the Cine Adarna entrance. You may also pre-register through this link:

unang nagtagpo ang aming mga mata.

Kutis niya’y puting gatas at mapula,
at may katawang kaaya-aya.
O babaeng pangarap na sana’y makilala.

Dumerecho muna ako sa kubeta para mag-mumog
Umihi na rin at kinambyo ang aking alaga,
Inareglo ko muna,
Baka mag-rebelde,
Mahirap na’t mauwi pa sa Edsa.

Paglabas ko ng kubeta,
saktong papasok siya.
Hindi ko naiwasan ang salubong ng aming mga mata,
Parang ninong na biglang binisita sa pasko at may nagmanong bata.

Hila ang aking bagahe,
nagtungo na ako sa waiting area.
Nilapag ko ang aking bag sa upuan at itinabi,
Bumili muna ako ng donut at kape.

Pagbalik ko sa aking kinauupuan,
nakaupo na siya sa aking tabi.
Ang babaeng aking pinagnanasahan,
at bigla akong hindi mapakali.

Pa Davao siya,
ako nama’y pa Maynila.
Dito sa Cebu kami unang nagkita,

Napansin niya ang dilaw na tali sa aking mga daliri,
sinabi ko na bigay ito babaeng sa puso ko’y nagmamayari.

Nagulat ako ng ako’y tanungin,
“Bakit iniwan mo siya?”
“Kung mahal mo yung nagbigay sayo niyan,
bakit hindi mo siya ngayon kasama?”

Wala akong nasabi at natahimik.

Sadyang ramdam ko pa ang kirot at sakit.
Tinawag na ang kanyang flight.
Nagpaalam na siya’t tumayo sa upuan,
Naiwan akong nag-iisa’t luhaan.

Babaeng panandalian kong pinagnasahan,
Hindi ko man lang nakilala ang pangalan.
Hanggang siya’y nagpaalam at lumisan.

Kung meron man ako babalikan,
Yung katangi-tanging babae kong minamahal.
Babaeng ginawa sa akin ang lahat
at bakit ko ba siya pinabayaan.

Patuloy akong maghihintay kung kailan,
makasamang muli ang babaeng aking pinakamamahal.
