THE DON ROMAN SANTOS BUILDING
1965 | 2022

HISTORY
The Don Roman Santos Building stands as a magnificent neoclassical edifice gracing the historic Escolta Street in Santa Cruz, Manila, Philippines. Steeped in history, this architectural gem overlooks Plaza Lacson (formerly Plaza Goiti) and offers a picturesque gateway to Carriedo Street and Rizal Avenue. Built in 1894 and expanded in 1957, the building has witnessed the transformations of the bustling city.

Originally serving as the headquarters of the Monte de Piedad Savings Bank from 1894 to 1937, the building then found new life as an American Red Cross-operated hospital from 1945 to 1947. In subsequent years, it housed the esteemed Prudential Bank and South Supermart. Today, the ground floor of this storied building is home to a branch of the Bank of the Philippine Islands, a testament to its enduring legacy in the heart of Manila.

STA. CRUZ BLDG. MEMORIES
Then | Now 🇵🇭

HISTORY
Standing proudly since its construction in 1948, the historic Sta. Cruz Building once stood as a welcoming symbol for tourists on the renowned Escolta, known as the "Queen of Manila Streets". Its reputation as the "Watch Center of Downtown Manila" attracted patrons seeking both luxury and affordable timepieces.

Tragically, this post-war architectural gem met its end in August 2021, succumbing to the aftermath of a quake that shook Manila in July. The decision to demolish the building came as a result of concerns over its weakened foundations, posing a potential danger to the public. Despite the demolition, there is a glimmer of hope for preserving its memory.

The National Historical Commission of the Philippines has mandated the developer, who plans to build a condominium on the same site, to faithfully replicate the entire frontage and arcade of the original building. This directive aims to honor and maintain the cherished memory of the Sta. Cruz Building's place in history.
