Be Prepared - Build an Emergency Kit
Unexpected situations happen every day. Having supplies is one thing you can do to help your household better manage disruptions whether they are big or small.
Reasons for an emergency kit:
- What equipment would you need to keep you connected and informed?
- What if you had to evacuate immediately? What would be important for you to bring?
- Build a "Grab and Go" bag if you need to evacuate or keep at home if you need to shelter in place.
Make sure it includes items to keep you safe, warm and comfortable for at least 72 hours (3 days). This will help provide you with some peace of mind in unexpected situations.
What goes into your emergency kit:
- Water: 4 litres per person, per day (water for pets)
- Non-perishable foods
- Supplies to keep you warm and comfortable (e.g.: extra clothing, blankets, etc.)
- Personal protective equipment and safety items
- Equipment to keep you informed, gives power, and provides light
- Personal items (e.g.: toiletries, medications, ID, cash, etc.)
- Consider entertainment (e.g.: books, games, toys, etc.)
- Any items that are unique to you
- Emergency Plan
Keep in mind to build your kit slowly. Write down the contents of each kit and keep it in a safe place to review on a regular basis.
You can also buy prepackaged basic kits, including vehicle and pet kits. Pre-purchased kits will need to be personalized for your specific needs. You can find help on how to build your kit here: https://www.alberta.ca/build-an-emergency-kit

: also known as whooping cough,
is a highly contagious bacterial disease. It is highly contagious in the early catarrhal stage, before paroxysmal cough. Incubation period is usually 7 days but it ranges from 5 to 15 days.
CAUSE
Bordetella pertussis bacteria
MODE OF TRANSMISSION
Acquired primarily through direct contact with discharges from respiratory mucus membranes of infected persons (The bacteria may be spread through droplets and indirect contact with articles freshly soiled with the discharges of infected persons.)
SIGNS & SYMPTOMS
• Cough persisting 2 or more weeks
• Fits of coughing
• Cough followed by vomiting
TREATMENT
Antibiotics may shorten the period of communicability from 7 days after exposure to 3 weeks after onset of typical paroxysms to only 5-7 days after onset therapy.
PREVENTION
Three primary immunization doses of DTaP (diphtheria, tetanus, and acellular pertussis vaccine) confer immunity to pertussis. Booster doses are recommended to be given after 1 year old, 4-6 years old, and at 11 years old.
The 5-in-1 vaccine, also known as the DTaP/IPV/Hib vaccine, is one of the first vaccines that your baby will have. It's a single injection which protects them against five serious childhood diseases.
These five illnesses are diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough (pertussis), polio, and Hib (Haemophilus influenzae type b).
This Penta/5-in-1 immunization is available in health centers nationwide.
