WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU HAVE DIABETIC RETINOPATHY?

Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes that affects your eye. High blood sugar levels can result in the blockage of tiny blood vessels that supply nourishment to the retina of your eye.

In its early stages, diabetic retinopathy often has no symptoms. Symptoms develop when the condition gets worse. These include seeing more and more floaters (spots in your vision), having blurred vision, having vision that changes sometimes from blurry to clear, having poor night vision, having blank or dark areas in your field of vision, noticing colors appear faded or washed out, and losing vision.

Consult your ophthalmologist for more information.

REDUCE EYESTRAIN DURING END-OF-YEAR CELEBRATIONS

When watching television, keep the room softly lit. Limit screen time, especially for children. Rest your eyes every 20 minutes and shift your focus to an object that's about 20 feet away. Blink often to moisten and refresh your eyes. Nonprescription artificial tears can help prevent and relieve dry eyes. Use them even when your eyes feel fine to keep them well lubricated and prevent a recurrence of symptoms.

Consult your ophthalmologist for more information.

PROTECT YOUR VISION DURING THE FESTIVE SEASON

Be alert around branches and pine needles, especially while decorating your Christmas tree; wear protective eyewear, such as glasses or sunglasses. Place pointed ornaments above children's eye level to prevent eye accidents. Consider using flameless or battery-powered Christmas candles. When purchasing gifts, follow the age recommendations for children’s toys. When uncorking the champagne, aim the bottle away from your own or others’ eyes to avoid injury.

Consult your ophthalmologist for more information.

HOW IS DIABETIC RETINOPATHY DIAGNOSED?

Your ophthalmologist will put drops in your eye to dilate (widen) your pupil, so that he or she can look through a special lens to see the inside of your eye. Your doctor may do optical coherence tomography (OCT) to look closely at the retina. In OCT, a machine scans the retina and provides detailed images of its thickness, helping your doctor find and measure swelling of your macula.

Your ophthalmologist may also do fluorescein angiography to see what is happening with the blood vessels in your retina. Fluorescein angiography uses a yellow dye called fluorescein, which is injected into a vein (usually in your arm). The dye travels through your blood vessels. A special camera takes photos of the retina as the dye travels throughout its blood vessels. This will show any blood vessels that are blocked or leaking fluid, as well as any abnormal blood vessels.

Talk to your ophthalmologist for more information.

👁️✨ Eye Makeup Safety Tips ✨👁️

1️⃣ Only use cosmetics that are designed for use around the eyes. Don’t use products that contain untested or harsh chemicals.

2️⃣ Throw away eye makeup after three months and get new products. Infection-causing bacteria grow easily in creamy or liquid eye makeup.

3️⃣ Before applying makeup, clean your face and eyelids thoroughly.

4️⃣ Always apply makeup outside the lash line, away from the eye, to avoid blocking the oil glands of the upper or lower eyelid. These glands secrete oil that protects the eye’s surface.

5️⃣ Never share eye makeup, even with family or close friends.

6️⃣ When sampling makeup in stores, use only fresh applicators and samples that have not been contaminated by multiple users. The safest choice is to not use store samples altogether.

7️⃣ If you develop an eye infection, like pink eye, immediately discard all of your eye makeup and don't use eye makeup until the infection is gone.

8️⃣ Be careful with glitter eye makeup as flakes can fall into the eye, get into the tear film and irritate your eyes, as well as cause infection.

9️⃣ Introduce only one new eye makeup or care product at a time, especially if you tend to have allergic reactions easily. Don't add another new product until you know you're not allergic to the first one.

🔟 Never apply makeup while in a moving vehicle.

1️⃣1️⃣ If your lashes are clumped together by mascara or another product, do not use anything sharp to separate the lashes. You can easily poke or scratch your eye by doing this.

1️⃣2️⃣ If you've recently had eye surgery, do not wear makeup around the eye until your ophthalmologist tells you it is safe to do so.

WHAT IS RETINOPATHY OF PREMATURITY?

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is an eye disease in some premature babies born before 31 weeks. A full-term pregnancy is about 38 to 42 weeks. With ROP, abnormal blood vessels grow on the baby’s retina, which can cause serious eye and vision problems later. ROP may go away on its own as an infant grows. However, the growing infant should be seen by an ophthalmologist regularly. Sometimes, urgent treatment is needed to prevent blindness.

Consult your ophthalmologist for more information on ROP.

HOW ARE EYE CANCERS DIAGNOSED?

An ophthalmologist can diagnose eye cancers by performing a variety of procedures to rule out other, more common eye conditions. Your eye doctor will perform a dilated eye exam to look closely for signs of cancer, such as dark spots and enlarged blood vessels. Imaging procedures, such as ultrasound and fluorescein angiography, can be used to diagnose eye cancer. A biopsy may also be done to remove a sample of tissue from the tumor and test it for cancer cells.

EYE HEALTH TIPS FOR ADULTS 40 TO 65

It’s very important to get a baseline comprehensive eye exam at age 40, even if you have no symptoms or known risk factors for eye disease. This is because early signs of disease and changes in vision often begin at age 40. In a comprehensive exam, your ophthalmologist will look for signs of cataract, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and age-related macular degeneration.

If you are diabetic or pre-diabetic, you need to have annual eye exams and work with your doctor to control your weight, blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol. Your ophthalmologist will recommend follow-up exams based on your family history and the results of the baseline comprehensive eye exam.

LASER SURGERY FOR DIABETIC RETINOPATHY

Laser surgery is performed to treat new blood vessels at the back of the eyes in the advanced stages of diabetic retinopathy. These new blood vessels tend to be very weak and often cause bleeding into the eye. Laser surgery can help stabilize the changes in your eyes caused by your diabetes and stop your vision from getting any worse, although it will not usually improve your sight.

Drops are administered to numb your eyes and widen your pupils. Then, special contact lenses are used to hold your eyelids open and focus the laser onto your retina. Laser surgery normally takes around 20 to 40 minutes and is usually carried out on an outpatient basis. It may require more than 1 visit to a laser treatment clinic.

Consult your eye doctor for more information.

WHAT CAUSES EYE BAGS?

As we grow older, tissues around our eyes gradually weaken and sag. The loss of skin tone allows fat to shift forward into the lower eyelids, making them look puffy and swollen. Fluid can also pool in this area and lead to swelling (edema) which can contribute to the puffy appearance.

Shadows may also appear under the eyes. They may be cast by swollen, puffy eyelids due to aging. Other factors that can contribute to eye bags include inadequate sleep, smoking, allergies, retaining fluid (often after waking up, or after eating salty food), and inheriting the condition (it can run in families).

FACTS ABOUT FLOATERS AND FLASHES

Floaters are small specks, dots, circles, lines or cobwebs in your field of vision. While they seem to be in front of your eye, they are actually floating inside. Floaters are tiny clumps of gel or cells inside the vitreous that fills your eye. What you see are the shadows these clumps cast on your retina.

Flashes are flashing lights or lightning streaks that appear in your field of vision. Some people describe flashes as similar to seeing “stars” after being hit on the head. Flashes can appear on and off for weeks, or even months. Flashes happen when the vitreous, the gel-like fluid in the center of the eye, rubs or pulls on your retina. It is common to see flashes occasionally as people age.

Consult your ophthalmologist for more information about floaters and flashes.

HOW IS GLAUCOMA DIAGNOSED?

Glaucoma is a group of diseases that damage the optic nerve and can result in vision loss and even blindness. It is the second leading cause of blindness worldwide. Glaucoma is diagnosed through a complete eye exam performed by an ophthalmologist. During a glaucoma exam, your ophthalmologist will measure your eye pressure, inspect your eye's drainage angle, examine your optic nerve for damage, test your peripheral (side) vision, take a picture or computer measurement of your optic nerve, and measure the thickness of your cornea.

WHAT IS DIABETIC RETINOPATHY?

Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes that affects your eye. High blood sugar levels can result in the blockage of tiny blood vessels that supply nourishment to the retina of your eye. With the blockage cutting off blood supply, your eye attempts to grow new blood vessels which do not develop properly and can leak easily. The damaged blood vessels and abnormal new ones can cause vision loss.
