“Oliver Guevarra Yalung, the Seventh President of the University of the Assumption, was born in Bacolor Pampanga, on February 1, 1975, to a devoutly Catholic couple (+) Jesus Yalung and Aurora Guevarra. He is the second eldest in a brood of four siblings (Preciosa, Oliver, Giovanni, and Maria Carolina).

The young Oliver began his primary schooling at the San Antonio Elementary School in 1981 and completed his elementary education in 1987 (Valedictorian). It was during his years as an elementary pupil and as a member of the Altar Servers of their parish that he initially felt drawn to the priesthood. He entered the Mother of Good Counsel Seminary (MGCS) in the City of San Fernando, Pampanga in 1987 and completed his High School education in 1991 (Salutatorian). He continued his college education at MGCS where he finished his philosophical formation, graduating in 1995, magna cm laude, with a degree in Bachelor of Arts major in Philosophy (Valedictorian; Philosopher of the Year Awardee). In 1999, he completed his theological studies at the Graduate School of Theology of MGCS as part of the requirements of his seminary formation.

Fr. Oliver was ordained to the Sacred Order of Presbyters in November 12, 1999 and was subsequently assigned as one of the formators of the Mother of Good Counsel Seminary. After 3 years, he was sent in 2003 for further studies in Liturgy at the 𝑃𝑜𝑛𝑡𝑖𝑓𝑖𝑐𝑖𝑜 𝐴𝑡𝑒𝑛𝑒𝑜 𝑑𝑖 𝑆𝑎𝑛𝑡’ 𝐴𝑛𝑠𝑒𝑙𝑚𝑜 𝐼𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑡𝑢𝑡𝑜 𝐿𝑖𝑡𝑢𝑟𝑔𝑖𝑐𝑜 in Rome, where he was granted a Licentiate degree in Liturgy (S.L.L.), magna cm laude (“𝐷𝑒 𝑃𝑟𝑎𝑒𝑓𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑒𝑠 𝐼-𝐼𝑉 𝑑𝑒 𝐷𝑜𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑖𝑐𝑖𝑠 ‘𝑃𝑒𝑟 𝐴𝑛𝑛𝑢𝑚’ 𝑖𝑛 𝑀𝑖𝑠𝑠𝑎𝑙𝑒 𝑅𝑜𝑚𝑎𝑛𝑢𝑚 2002: 𝐻𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑜𝑟𝑦 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑇ℎ𝑒𝑜𝑙𝑜𝑔𝑦”) in July 2006.

Upon his return from Rome, Fr. Oliver was assigned as Director of the Archdiocesan Commission on Sacred Liturgy from May 2007 to June 2016 and as Dean of Studies of the MGCS Philosophy Department and Graduate School of Theology from May 2007 to March 2013. He was subsequently appointed Director of Formation of the MGCS Theology Department from May 2013 to March 2016. During his stay at MGCS, he was granted a Master of Arts in Theology (M.A.T.) degree at the Graduate School of Theology after he defended his master’s thesis (“Theology of the Prefaces of Sundays in Ordinary Time of the Missal of Paul IV”) in March 2010.

Fr. Oliver’s love for the Sacred Liturgy is unmistakable. He is a member of the Asian Liturgy Forum, a Lecturer at the Paul VI Institute of Liturgy in Malaybalay, Bukidnon, and a Professor of Liturgy at the MGCS Graduate School of Theology and the San Beda University Graduate School of Liturgy.

In April 2014, Fr. Oliver began his ministry at the University of the Assumption as Director of the Institute of Theology and Religious Studies. He was concurrently appointed Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs in April 2018, and Vice President for Academic Affairs in August 2020. During this period, he earned his Doctorate in Liturgy (D.L.), cm laude, at the Paul VI Graduate School of Liturgy of San Beda University in February 2016 (“The Growth and Maturation of the Church by the Paschal Mystery of Christ in the Light of the Sunday Prefaces of Ordinary Time of the Roman Missal 2002”), and also completed his Doctorate (Ph.D.) in Education major in Educational Leadership and Management at the De La Salle Araneta University in August 2022 (Best Dissertation Awardee: “Anam A Kalam: An Educational Management Model Based on the Case of an Archdiocesan Catholic University”).

In the regular meeting of the University of the Assumption Board of Trustees held last April 26, 2024, the officers and members of the Board unanimously voted to confirm the nomination of Rev. Fr. Oliver G. Yalung, D.L., Ph.D., to succeed Fr. Joselito C. Henson, S.Th.D. as the next President of the University of the Assumption.

As Fr. Oliver takes on the challenging task of leading our University community, we ask the Lord to enlighten him with His wisdom, to inspire him with His love, to console him with His presence, to protect him with His grace, and to strengthen him with His power.”
