Last October 20, 2024, I traveled to Vigan City to speak at RC Vigan’s ‘Checkmate to End Polio’ project. This project not only raised awareness for polio eradication worldwide but also promoted the game of chess as a valuable tool for education and community engagement. I truly appreciated the warm hospitality and fellowship of the dedicated members of RC Vigan, who continue to engage in meaningful projects even on a “Sunday”. Kudos to RC Vigan!

Together, we are one in our mission to ‘End Polio Now’!

Growing Rotary - Starting a New Club…. The Right Way.

As we consider how to grow rotary, it’s important to focus on expanding our mission and helping more communities, rather than getting caught up in personal agendas, ambitions or conflicts. When new clubs are formed or members transfer due to disagreements or power struggles, it can usually cause more harm than good. Instead of coming together, we risk dividing, which weakens our overall impact.

The illusion of Growth

When clubs break apart or members transfer without careful thought, it may seem like we’re growing, but in reality, we’re just reshuffling the same people. This can dilute each club’s ability to serve effectively. Dividing over personal issues instead of uniting for a common purpose means we miss out on the strength we have when we work together. We end up competing for attention and resources rather than focusing on how to better serve our communities.

In our District, we see this issue very often. New clubs pop-up, only to fade away soon after. This cycle drains our time and resources, and leads to frustration among Rotarians. Conflicts often arise when members transfer to other clubs without clear communication or understanding, leading to further division and instability. When clubs form from a group of transferring members, they may struggle to establish themselves, while the original club loses experienced members who have been vital to its success. This cycle prevents “Real” membership growth and leaves us fragmented instead of united.

The Importance of Integrity in forming New Clubs

We should be forming new clubs to genuinely “expand our reach” and “help more people” and not just for recognition and/or to fulfill “Personal Motives or ambitions”. When clubs are created out of a desire for power, control, position or recognition, it leads to distrust and a lack of cooperation. Such clubs may not be sustainable and may struggle to attract new members since they don’t align with Rotary’s core value of “Service Above Self.”

The Role of Satellite Clubs

Satellite clubs can play a significant role in growing our impact and reaching new communities. They allow us to extend Rotary’s mission by creating smaller, more flexible groups that can respond quickly to its needs. However, the formation of satellite clubs must always be approached with “Integrity and Respect, just like traditional clubs. If a satellite club is formed “hastily” or as a response to “internal conflicts”, it risks facing the same challenges as newly formed clubs. It’s crucial that satellite clubs operate with a clear purpose, “complementing” their parent club’s goals rather than competing with them, ensuring we are truly expanding our reach rather than duplicating efforts.

Respect and Courtesy in Member Transfers

One important aspect we often overlook is the need to obtain clearance from a member’s old club before they join a new one. This simple act of courtesy shows great respect for the transferring member’s club and helps maintain harmony between clubs. It prevents misunderstandings and ensures everyone is on the same page, reinforcing our commitment to “mutual respect”.

Strengthening Rotary’s Future through Unity, Integrity and Respect

To truly achieve our mission, we must emphasize “Ethical” and Thoughtful growth. Club formations and member transfers should be driven by a “Genuine” desire to make a positive impact, and not for personal interests. By fostering a culture of integrity, fairness and mutual respect, Rotary can continue to grow sustainably and serve our communities better. Together, let’s ensure that every step we take is driven by a shared purpose and aligns with Rotary principles and ideals.

This photo was taken during my selection as DGND - DG for RY 2026-2027 last February 10, 2024.

“I’m truly honored by this selection. But to be honest, up to now, I’m still in disbelief that I’ve reached this point in my Rotary Journey—it hasn’t fully sunk in yet. And as I reflect on this role and its responsibilities, I am both humbled and excited for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.”

My heartfelt thanks to the DNC-district nominating committee members for placing their trust in me. I will work tirelessly to live up to your expectations and make you proud.

Rotary is built on service, leadership, and fellowship. Each Rotarian plays a key role in making our district stronger and more vibrant. Our journey toward positive change starts today, with every action we take in our clubs and communities.

In the coming months, we’ll be visiting clubs to hear your thoughts and ideas. Every Rotarian’s voice matters. Together, let’s create an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued, empowered to lead, contribute, and help shape the future of our district.
