Hi. Yesterday I attended to a diabetic patient who had amputation of 2 toes..upon learning the treatment in my clinic he almost faint because of the lost chance to get the treatment. I can't forget his face showing his frustration. I just advise him to keep his blood sugar in control and get regular results check up. I quoted to him. "laging sa huli ang pagsisisi". No offense meant though.. Love your limbs.

HOPE FOR CHRONIC NON-HEALING WOUNDS / DIABETIC WOUNDS

Introduction

Many patients afflicted with different kinds of wounds sometime become hopeless especially those with diabetic ulcers or diabetic foot. Some have a great fear of losing their limbs/feet. The burdens brought by these medical conditions range from financial, economic, relationship and most of all psychological.

With the advancement of wound treatment, patients have now big hope that a good, reliable, high cure rate and proven treatment is now available locally. At SAF Saving Foot Clinic many patients with wounds who were candidates for amputations and with difficult and long term care have already benefited from such treatment - NPWT.

WHAT IS NPWT?
Negative-pressure wound therapy (NPWT) is a therapeutic technique using a vacuum dressing to promote healing in acute or chronic wounds and enhance healing of several kinds/types of wound including second and third degree burns. The therapy involves the controlled application of sub-atmospheric pressure to the local wound environment, using a sealed wound dressing connected to a vacuum pump.

NPWT promotes wound healing by applying a vacuum through a special sealed dressing. There is now sufficient evidence (both foreign and local experience) to show that NPWT is safe, and will accelerate healing, to justify its use in the treatment of diabetes-associated chronic leg wounds. There is also evidence to suggest that healing of other wounds may also be accelerated.

INDICATIONS: Chronic Non-Healing wounds, Diabetic Ulcers, Wound dehiscence, Decubitus Ulcers (Stage 2,3,4..
Contraindications: Malignancy in the wound, Untreated Osteomyelitis, Non enteric and unexplored fistulas, necrotic tissue with eschar present.
