𝑩𝒆𝒍𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒅 𝒇𝒂𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓
Joseph placed himself at the service of God’s plan of salvation. He cared for the Holy Family that God had entrusted to him. He became an attentive servant from the moment of the Annunciation, a provident servant in caring for Mary and the Child she carried in her womb. He defended the Family in the moment of danger. These are just a few of Saint Joseph’s traits that explain why the People of God are especially devoted to him.

𝑻𝒆𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒓 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒍𝒐𝒗𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒇𝒂𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓
Joseph taught Jesus how to walk, holding Him by the hand. Jesus saw the tenderness of God in Joseph, the Just Man. In Joseph, Jesus saw a man of faith who knew how to view life with hope because, in the midst of the storm, God remains steadfast at the helm of the course of life.

𝑶𝒃𝒆𝒅𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒇𝒂𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓
God’s plan was revealed to Joseph through dreams. He always responded promptly: at the moment of the Annunciation of the Lord, when Herod wanted to kill the Child, when Herod died. Joseph was guided by God and he obeyed. Jesus absorbed this filial “submission” to God from Joseph. He learned obedience from His parents.

𝑨𝒄𝒄𝒆𝒑𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒇𝒂𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓
Joseph is presented as someone who is respectful and sensitive, capable of placing Mary’s dignity and life above everything else, even above his own reputation. Joseph accepts, certain that everything is guided by God’s providence. He understood that life reveals itself according to the degree to which God’s plan is accepted, to the degree to which we reconcile ourselves to God’s plan. This is Christian realism: to accept, to welcome God into our own personal history, to learn how to welcome and accept everyone we meet.

𝑪𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒗𝒆𝒍𝒚 𝒄𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒂𝒈𝒆𝒐𝒖𝒔 𝒇𝒂𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓
In the face of difficulties, Joseph always brought out the most unexpected resources. Joseph is the man through whom God manifested His providential care from the beginning of the history of salvation. Difficulties never stopped the boldness and tenacity of this just and wise man in whom God trusted, just as He trusted in Mary. This is how we see in Joseph the Guardian of the Holy Family: first of his family in Nazareth, and today, of the Church.

𝑾𝒐𝒓𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒇𝒂𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓
Work, understood as participating in God’s own work, is what Joseph carried out in his own life and what he taught Jesus. Work is important to bring to birth a new “normal”, in which no one is excluded. Saint Joseph’s work recalls that Jesus, the Son of God-made-Man did not disdain manual labor. Work guarantees human dignity.

𝑭𝒂𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓 𝒊𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒔𝒉𝒂𝒅𝒐𝒘𝒔
As a father, Joseph introduced the Son of God to life’s experiences and realities: not holding Him back, not confining Him, not possessing Him, but fostering His capacity of making choices, His freedom, eventually letting Him leave home. The logic of love is always the logic of freedom: Joseph’s joy is the gift of himself. He made himself obsolete. At a certain point, he stayed in the background so that his Son could emerge.

FEBRUARY 14 | ASH WEDNESDAY
This year's Ash Wednesday is special as it coincides with Valentine's Day. Ash Wednesday solicits sacrifice among the Catholic faithful, in the same manner, that love —the main theme of Valentine's Day— exhorts its adherents to sacrifice themselves to win over the individuals whom they cherish.

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Lenten Season. Catholics in good health between the ages of 18 and 59 are obligated to observe fasting and abstinence.

Fasting means taking only one full meal and two smaller meals which should not equal one full meal. While meat is not allowed, fish and all cold-blooded animals are permitted to be eaten.

On the other hand, abstinence means refraining from eating the meat from mammals or fowl, including soup, gravy, meat snacks, etc. However, this does not apply to dairy products, eggs, or condiments and shortening made from animal fat. Both fasting and abstinence are obligatory on Ash Wednesday under the pain of mortal sin.

But the highlight of this holy day is the receiving of ash on one's forehead in the form of a cross during Holy Mass. This practice reminds us faithful to contemplate on our mortality — that God made us from dust, and to dust shall we return. We are not forever on this realm.

May the love that St. Valentine represents help us realize that we fast and abstain not out of obligation but out of our love for Christ, a love that is eternal.

In 1830, the Blessed Mary specifically instructed St. Catherine Labouré to create a medal with a specific design. It features an image of Mary standing on a globe, with rays of light streaming from her hands, and the prayer, "𝑶 𝑴𝒂𝒓𝒚, 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒄𝒆𝒊𝒗𝒆𝒅 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒔𝒊𝒏, 𝒑𝒓𝒂𝒚 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒖𝒔 𝒘𝒉𝒐 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒓𝒆𝒄𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒔𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒆." This prayer later encapsulates the connection to the dogma of the Immaculate Conception. The wording reflects the belief in Mary's sinless conception, affirming her freedom from original sin from the moment of her conception.

𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐃𝐎𝐆𝐌𝐀
Pope Pius IX issued the papal bull "𝑰𝒏𝒆𝒇𝒇𝒂𝒃𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒔 𝑫𝒆𝒖𝒔" on December 8, 1854, officially defining the dogma. This declaration emphasizes the special privilege bestowed upon Mary, making her uniquely pure and sinless, in preparation for her role as the mother of Jesus Christ. The solemnity of the Immaculate Conception is celebrated on December 8th each year in the Catholic Church.

𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐅𝐈𝐑𝐌𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍
In 1858, in Lourdes, France, the Virgin Mary appeared to Bernadette Soubirous, a young girl, in a series of visions. During one of her apparitions, Mary identified herself to Bernadette, saying, "𝑰 𝒂𝒎 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑰𝒎𝒎𝒂𝒄𝒖𝒍𝒂𝒕𝒆 𝑪𝒐𝒏𝒄𝒆𝒑𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏."

𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐌𝐈𝐒𝐄
The apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima in 1917 took place in Portugal, where the Virgin Mary appeared to three shepherd children—Lucia dos Santos, and her cousins Jacinta and Francisco Marto. Mary mentioned in her apparition: "𝑴𝒚 𝑰𝒎𝒎𝒂𝒄𝒖𝒍𝒂𝒕𝒆 𝑯𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒕 𝒘𝒊𝒍𝒍 𝒃𝒆 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒓𝒆𝒇𝒖𝒈𝒆 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒘𝒂𝒚 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒘𝒊𝒍𝒍 𝒍𝒆𝒂𝒅 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒕𝒐 𝑮𝒐𝒅." The messages at Fatima align with the call for devotion to Mary's Immaculate Heart, emphasizing her sinlessness and purity. It reinforces the importance of recognizing Mary's unique and immaculate status, promoting a deeper spiritual connection to her as an advocate for humanity.

Today is also the 76th birthday of former Mayor Lourdes S. Cataquiz. She was named after her patroness, Our Lady of Lourdes.

5 FACTS ON THE APPARITION OF OUR LADY OF LOURDES

On Feb. 11, the Catholic Church celebrates the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes. In Lourdes, France, in 1858, thirteen-year-old Bernadette Soubirous was collecting pieces of wood as part of her daily chores when she noticed a startling wind and rustling sound. The noise came from a nearby grotto. When Bernadette looked toward it, she saw it filled with a golden light, and a beautiful lady.

It was at this grotto that the Blessed Mother appeared to Bernadette 18 times and where millions of Catholic pilgrims visit the healing waters at the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes.

Records have been kept from the exchanges between Bernadette and our Blessed Mother. Here are five of the most fascinating facts about the apparitions that took place at the grotto:

1. The Paralyzation

When Bernadette first saw the beautiful lady in the grotto during the first apparition, on Feb. 11, 1858, it is said that she immediately smiled at Bernadette and signaled to her to come closer, in the same way a mother motions to her child. Bernadette took out her rosary and knelt before the Lady, who also had a rosary on her right arm. When Bernadette tried to begin saying the rosary by making the sign of the cross, her arm was paralyzed. It was only after the Lady made the sign of the cross herself that Bernadette was able to do the same. The Lady remained silent as Bernadette prayed the rosary, but the beads of her rosary passed between her fingers.

2. The Secret Prayer

During the fifth apparition, which took place on Feb. 20, 1858, the Lady taught Bernadette a prayer, which she recited everyday for the rest of her life. However, she never revealed the prayer to anyone, but she did say she was told to always bring a blessed candle with her. This is why candles perpetually burn at the Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes.

3. The Lady shares her Name

At the sixteenth apparition, on March 25, 1858, the feast of the Annunciation, the Lady revealed her identity to Bernadette, calling herself the “Immaculate Conception.”

4. The Burn of Fire

Bernadette never forgot to bring a lighted candle to the grotto since she was told to do so by the Lady. During the seventeenth apparition, on April 7, 1858, Bernadette unconsciously placed one of her hands over the burning flame. Witnesses saw the flame burning through her fingers, and yet she was able to pray for fifteen minutes with the flame burning her hand. As she emerged from her prayer, she was unscathed and didn’t even notice cries of horror from the people in the crowd. Dr. Dozous, a well-known physician from Lourdes, took another lit candle, and without warning, placed the flame to her hand. Bernadette immediately cried out in pain.

5. The Miracle of Bernadette’s Body

After the apparitions ended, Bernadette went on to become a Sister of Charity. She died at age 34, on April 16, 1879. She was buried on the convent grounds in Nevers, France. Thirty years later, on Sept. 22, 1909, her body was exhumed and found completely intact. A second exhumation took place on April 3, 1919. The body was found in the exact same state as it had been ten years earlier. Bernadette was canonized a Saint on Dec. 8, 1933 by Pope Pius XI.
