In a few hours, we will embark on a new journey - finding the harmony between the grains of sand, bubbles within seafoams and sun streaks peeking through blades of palms to Franco Mamaril. 🌐⋆。°✩🌀

Franco Mamaril (b. 1996 / San Pedro, Laguna) immerses himself in the off/on-line and the various relational/programming languages to create artworks as representations of his existence to these world/s. His artistic practice of exploring images involves transforming traditional media to generative images by applying experimental flows in simulating the effects created by design software.

In living and making off/on-line through these realities, Franco experiences a heightened expansion of his character and narrative-making; negotiations with acceptance of our humanness; and understanding the impacts of his participation in the internet-culture.

Pastol na Huwad, 2022
Julius Bagoyo
9:16, 22 seconds

"Pastol na Huwad" is a video work consisting of 7 images. The subject is a collage work of former Dictator Ferdinand Marcos, crowned in thorns, overlaid with spliced images of his now destroyed concrete bust, located in Benguet. The work is a representation of the artist’s response to the current climate of local politics. The phrases “Pastol na Huwad”, “Pastol na Baliw”, and “Pastol na Ganid” are also overlaid on the portrait of the fascist president—these phrases are commentaries on how the machinery of the reactionary regime have mystified and placed Marcos(and his dynasty) as some kind of “savior”, a false messiah.

Since 2022, Julius Bagoyo has been a part of Tambisan sa Sining, a National Democratic Cultural Mass Organization centered on fighting and advocating for workers’ rights to a liveable wage, job security, and the rights to organize in workplaces. In line with this, his current works attempt to navigate how his practice can contribute more to local communities and politics, centering the conceptual framework of his pieces into representational works which he hopes not only to embody, but to also crystalize ideas of revolution and the struggle of the masses.

*Bagoyo's work was one of the videos featured in Cultivating a Garden's exhibition titled ANDAR*

>>>ANDAR featured moving images prompted by the words ACTIVE and PUBLIC. A public screening presented at Iron Macchina Customs, the video works by local artists were directed towards a traffic light intersection on the evening of August 19, 2022.

🌄SUNSET GARDEN UPDATE🌇

A gathering
to make a sense of touch-
From one body to another:
Soul to soul,
Warmth by The Sun.
---
a.p. presents Sunset Garden for the fourth installment of Slow Leak: a series on haptic reading, curated by Kristina Stallvik

Deriving from the individual projects of Kristoff and Bascon, Grindr Sunsets and Cultivating a Garden respectively, Sunset Garden (2022) is one component of their amorphous collaborative undertaking, a "temporary congregation of friends and strangers over a reclaimed land at Laguna de Bay." The publication chronicles a specific meeting held at sunset on December 12, 2021 in De La Paz, Biñan, Laguna. Standing together in the water, participants reflected on virtual intimacies anf their experience learning about HIV.

Stop by a.p. to browse the publication, learn more about Kristoff and Bascon's transdisciplinary project, and purchase the last copies of Sunset Garden. Tuesday-Saturday, 12pm-7pm.
---

In much of western philosophical thought, our senses are limited to the singular abilities attributed by the demarcation of touch, hearing, sight, smell, and taste. Deploying a logic of the haptic, sensory organs are instead understood as constituting the volatile boundary layer between our flesh and the exterior world through a messy, inextricable practice of sense-making. The book as an epistemological format presents the potential for a manifold of haptic relations. Books contain their own physical demands. Reading is never passive nor disembodied; it only exists at the confluence of language and the body. In the contexts of both the digital and the cerebral, the haptic qualities of reading work to inscribe the somatic within non-material spaces.

Over the course of one month, slow leak will present a rotating exhibition of works by artists, writers, and self publishers which take an experimental approach to the act of reading, the role of publication, and the requirements of a book object itself. Through considerations of the virtual, erotic, commercial, and performative, these works ask the question ‘what is haptic reading?’

Exciting news~ Sunset Garden, a project Czar Kristoff and I started in 2021 is featured in Foam Magazine No. 64 EXTREMES – The Environmental Issue! Thank you Henri Badaröh for looking at Sunset Garden, and to Pablo Lerma for sharing with us his insight of our looking at the sunset, as well as links to other aspects of q***rness and navigating various scapes. 🌄
--------

EXTREMES — The Environmental Issue looks at the complexities of today’s human-nature relationship through two different lenses. One half focuses on abundance and the other half, featured on the flip side of the magazine, on scarcity. Industrialisation, overpopulation, consumerism v scarcity, inequality, and the destruction of vital habitats: we address the divergences of the Anthropocene and how photography exposes them. We invite you to delve into this issue from both extremities, as a whole, while acknowledging that everything is interconnected.

: Tending a garden

"What is an ecology? Anong namang kinalaman nyan about my art? How can I be part of a community?" --- these questions were (partly) answered with a diagram at the back end of the First United Building, while having a cigarette pep session before the actual presentation. the diagram asks and highlights: SOLIDARITY / infrastructure / economy / language / ADMIN WORK > systems > labor >resources / resistance / commitment / understanding / trust/ communal / working together / radical care models / re-think / exhibits only?! / q***r space / openness / world-making / speculative / relational / haev a personal theory of change / DISSENT / artistic economy > run > centric / minorities / $ better pay $ / Promote / practice in the probinsya!!! //

To tend is: to move, direct, or develop one's course in a particular direction / to apply oneself / and to cultivate and foster.

We are grateful for the artists here in Laguna and the city in their support for Cultivating a Garden! And to 98B in providing a space to gather and present our efforts in continuing our creative endeavors towards our shared sense of purpose in developing an ecology.

Maraming salamat sa Bili Bili at KalawakanSpacetime sa isa nanamang pagkakataong makapaglatag at makihalubilo sa mga kapwa-manlilikha!

most of the merch we sell were on it's 4th latag! and they are still going strong, along with new ones (and there's more coming)!

it's inspiring but how do we really cultivate a garden? for now it is by giving support to each other - creatives or not - and by continuously having conversations about what we do and what we could do for what we want for our garden/s.

nakakatuwa ding pangyayari ang makakilala ng mga kapwa-artists na naninirahan dito sa south kada ganap - just like magic!

hanggang sa susunod! At muli ay maraming salamat!

Capri Art Cafe and Gallery is a DIY roofdeck sanctuary breathed by the Sierra Madre, serving vegetarian cuisines made from local garden produce by community gardens initiated by Aster Bedico❤️ Patit Österreich and their friends in San Pedro, Laguna.

They also foster the local creative community by hosting MAKAThANG isip at the beginning of 2023, and Kwentong Kutsero, which just concluded - their efforts on gathering local creatives to a night of communing.

"Our advocacies are as follows: to help build a healthier society thru plant-based diet, animal welfare, lower carbon footprint and arts for humanity. That's our guiding principle." says Patit when asked what they want to share about what they do.

We do appreciate sharing your space with us!

Nood tayo! 📽

Repost from CAPRI Island cafe:

A colloquial term, kwentong kutsero is the opposite of kwentong barbero, before the age of automobiles and waze, the kutsero know his way around, updated on the current happenings of his area, a keen observer juggling directing a horse, driving a carriage and engaging with his passengers with his kwento.

Kwentong Kutsero - take a seat, enjoy the ride, let the pancho drive! This series of short films thru the film makers eyes, will bring you to a trip inside their world. We will be showing curated films featuring winners of 'Sulyap' Film festival of San Pedro, Laguna and other celebrated local film makers! Free Admission. RSVP to Reserve a seat.

To Watch The Sunset Once Again reflects on q***r experiences that are often outlined by the light. Originally exhibited at the Cultural Center of the Philippines in March 2022, this re-staging will attempt to deconstruct this short film through a live lyrical and auditory performance.

To Watch The Sunset Once Again is an excerpt from a project called Sunset Garden, that sees the sunset as a transition, a metaphor and embodiment. Organized by Czar Kristoff and Zeus Bascon.
