THE OUR LADY OF THE ABANDONED OF SANTA ANA, MANILA VISITS THE SANTO CRISTO DE BURGOS OF SARIAYA
PART 1
by Eric J. Dedace

The late morning of Saturday, October 10, 2015 was a very historic day for Sariaya because the replica of the revered icon of the Santa Ana Church in Manila, the “Our Lady of the Abandoned” or the “Nuestra Señora De Los Desamparados” came to town. The said visit was accordingly facilitated by Santa Ana, Manila’s parish priest, the Rev. Msgr. W***y Benito and Santa Ana Historian Mr. Ernie Panis, with the cooperation of the St. Francis of Assisi Parish led by Rev. Msgr. Oscar Leaño. Msgr. Benito and Mr. Panis accordingly visited Msgr. Leaño weeks before and told him about the connection between their beloved early 18th century icon and the Santo Cristo de Burgos, Sariaya’s miraculous 18th century likeness of the medieval crucifix of Burgos, Spain.

From their research, the Santa Ana parish church was said to have dated back to the year 1578, the very first church built outside the walls of old Intramuros. It was founded by the Franciscans and the very first church was a simple one made of nipa and bamboo, which was dedicated to its titular patroness, St. Anne. The very first site was in a settlement with a creek connecting to the Pasig River and accordingly, it was from there that in the year 1580, the Franciscan order spread southwards to establish parishes and build churches in Laguna, Tayabas and Bicol. From the Historia, Geografica, Geologica Y Estadistica De Filipinas by Don Agustin Cavieda and Mendez De Vigo, there were about 7,673 pagan residents in the area who, accordingly, were Christianized by Franciscan friars. In 1599, the Franciscan Missionary priests formally came with Fr. Miguel de Linares as the very first parish priest of the new Franciscan Mission in Castañas and the date was April 17, 1599.

Accordingly during the same year 1599, a decree from the Spanish colonial government permitted the Santa Ana church to be made of stone but it was only during the term of its then parish priest Fr. Vicente Ingles, OFM that the present church was built at a new chosen site between 1720 to 1725. It was said that in the early 1700s, Fr. Ingles went to Valencia, Spain and got so enamored with its then spiritual attraction, the famous image of the Virgin Mary known as the “Our Lady of the Abandoned”. In 1713, he decided to have a copy of the image for the Santa Ana parish and after reverently touching it to the original image, he bought the new replica image with him to the Philippines in 1717 where it was placed in an altar inside the then still being constructed Santa Ana church.

According to Msgr. W***y Benito and Mr. Ernie Panis, the Our Lady of the Abandoned arrived in their church in the year 1717, carried by a galleon that was named the Santo Cristo de Burgos. In those days, as they related, a galleon was named after the icon that it was carrying, and there was supposedly an altar where the said icon was enshrined for the duration of the voyage from Spain through Mexico. As such, it indicated that the Our Lady of the Abandoned had an 18th century Santo Cristo de Burgos icon as companion in the said galleon. With this knowledge, they looked for the Santo Cristo de Burgos on Google, to ascertain where in the country can they find it, and their search led them to the story of the one and only venerated Santo Cristo de Burgos in the Philippines, that of Sariaya, Quezon’s. Upon learning that it is likewise vintage 18th century, they lost no time in going to the St. Francis of Assisi Parish for the very purpose, hence their meeting with Msgr. Leaño so stated.

According to the oral tradition, the Franciscan Mission at Castañas did not last long because of the burning pillage of Moro pirates that frequently attack Christianized settlements along the Tayabas Bay area, and as such, the settlement was transferred inland in the year 1641, to the north and away from the sea. However, it was said that the Moro pirates were relentless in their burning pillage that they reached and sacked the place as in Castañas, that in 1703, the residents again transferred northwards, further from the coastline and established the third town site at “Lumang Bayan” in what is now Barangay Tumbaga 1. It was at this place that accordingly, the Franciscan friars and the people thought of petitioning the then King Phillip V of Spain for a likeness of the Santo Cristo de Burgos. Eventually, this was said to have been granted and the icon arrived in the country carried by a galleon, and eventually got its way to its adoptive home at the said stone church at Lumangbayan. It must have been a very joyous occasion and accordingly, a caretaker called either a “Recamador” for a male or “Recamadora” for a female was assigned to look after its welfare, most especially during its feast day of September 14th, the feast day of the “Exaltation of the Cross”. There is no record of the date when it arrived at Lumangbayan yet based on the already known facts surrounding the arrival of the Our Lady of the Abandoned so mentioned, Msgr. W***y Benito and Mr. Ernie Panis, said that the year 1717 would probably be considerable, most especially that 1717 is well within the timeline when the thriving Sariayahin community at Lumangbayan existed between 1703 and 1743.

The Lumangbayan settlement is to the south of Mount Banahaw, said to be a volcano, the first recorded eruption of which was in 1539. This was according to rare sketches by Spanish geologists reprinted in Volume 1 of the 1903 Census of the Philippine Islands, so mentioned and featured by Sariaya historian and writer Martin C. Ilao PhD, in his “Sariaya, Oh Sariaya : A Short History For The Young” publication, as well as the the LIKAS Sariaya book of the Sariaya Quadri-Centennial Foundation. The eruption was said to have produced a 700 foot deep elliptical crater tilted to the south that through time became a lake. Its next recorded violent eruption came in the year 1730 which, according to the research of another Sariaya historian and writer Enrico P. Villoso PhD in his unpublished work entitled “Facts, Possibilities, Bits And Other Non – Events In The History Of Kalilaya”, resulted in the initial cracking of the southwest ridge of the said Mount Banahaw crater lake. He likewise mentioned about the threat of flooding to our Lumangbayan ancestors, by way of the local topography and the geophysical characteristic of the area. Eventually, there was a recorded big earthquake in January 1743 that destroyed communities and churches around the Mount Banahaw region, which accordingly culminated in the collapse of the crater, resulting in a deadly and destructive flood huge rocks, mud and water that obliterated the Lumang Bayan settlement from the face of the earth.
