The country continues to observe the Fire Prevention Month with Presidential Proclamation 115-A of former President Marcos Sr. in 1966. According to statistics from the BFP, fire incidents frequently occur in the months of March and April, and are seen as having a direct correlation of the rising temperatures brought about by the summer season.

Fires electrical in origin still remain to be the leading cause of these incidents, averaging at about 40.72% of the 16,433 incidents recorded in the previous year 2023. In the sweltering heat of this summer season, forest fires, particularly the ongoing incident at Benguet, have been keeping our firefighters on their toes due to the challenging terrain and difficulties in the transportation of extinguishing capabilities.

The BFP recommends the maintenance of electrical connections by licensed professionals once every two years. Exercise caution in using electricity especially with electric fans, air conditioners, and refrigerators. Having a good exit drill in the home and practicing good housekeeping are also recommended to minimize the chances of the occurrence of fire.

International Women's Day is celebrated in many countries around the world. It is a day when women are recognized for their achievements without regard to divisions, whether national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic or political.

Since those early years, International Women's Day has assumed a new global dimension for women in developed and developing countries alike. The growing international women's movement, which has been strengthened by four global United Nations women's conferences, has helped make the commemoration a rallying point to build support for women's rights and participation in the political and economic arenas.

We invite you to learn about the history of women’s rights and the UN's contribution to the cause.

March is COLORECTAL CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

Colorectal cancer is a type of cancer that develops slowly over several years from uncontrolled cell growth in the colon or re**um. It is the fourth leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide and affects individuals over the age of 50.

In the Philippines, colorectal cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer-related deaths among Filipinos. Personal or family history of colorectal cancer, polyps in the re**um or colon, and inflammatory bowel disease increase the risk of developing the disease. Lifestyle factors, such as a diet high in fat and low in fruits and vegetables, alcohol consumption, and physical inactivity, also increase the risk. Most early colorectal cancers have no symptoms, but changes in bowel habits, weight loss, unexplained anemia, and blood in the stool may be indicators of the disease.

LEPROSY CONTROL WEEK 2024

Leprosy is an age-old disease and is described in the literature of ancient civilizations. It is a chronic infectious disease which is caused by a type of bacteria called Mycobacterium leprae. The disease affects the skin, the peripheral nerves, mucosa of the upper respiratory tract, and the eyes. Leprosy is curable and treatment in the early stages can prevent disability. Apart from the physical deformity, persons affected by leprosy also face stigmatization and discrimination.

The disease is transmitted through droplets from the nose and mouth. Prolonged, close contact over months with someone with untreated leprosy is needed to catch the disease. The disease is not spread through casual contact with a person who has leprosy like shaking hands or hugging, sharing meals or sitting next to each other. Moreover, the patient stops transmitting the disease when they begin treatment.

Diagnosis
The diagnosis of leprosy is done clinically. Laboratory-based services may be required in cases that are difficult to diagnose.

The disease manifests commonly through skin lesion and peripheral nerve involvement. Leprosy is diagnosed by finding at least one of the following cardinal signs: (1) definite loss of sensation in a pale (hypopigmented) or reddish skin patch; (2) thickened or enlarged peripheral nerve, with loss of sensation and/or weakness of the muscles supplied by that nerve; (3) microscopic detection of bacilli in a slit-skin smear.

February World Cancer Day

Health equity in cancer is when everyone has an equal opportunity to prevent cancer, find it early, and get proper treatment. People can lower their risk of getting many kinds of cancer by making healthy choices like avoiding to***co, keeping a healthy weight, and protecting their skin from the sun. ORAL HEALTH MONTH

As February unfolds, the Philippines shines a spotlight on the importance of oral health, fostering a culture of preventive dental care and healthy smiles. Through education, community outreach, and collaboration with healthcare professionals, Oral Health Month serves as a platform to empower individuals and communities to prioritize their oral health, ensuring a nation with smiles that radiate well-being and vitality.
Beyond the immediate benefits of a healthy smile, Oral Health Month also underscores the connection between oral health and overall well-being. Research has shown links between oral health and conditions such as heart disease and diabetes. By promoting good oral hygiene, the country aims not only to enhance smiles but also to contribute to the confidence and holistic health of its citizens.

Our Story

Caraga Regional Hospital is located in Surigao City, on the northeastern tip of the Philippine island of Mindanao. The hospital is one of at least four hospitals serving the area including Saint Paul University Hospital, Miranda Family Hospital and Surigao Medical Center all are located within 1 1⁄2 miles (2.4 km) of each other on National Road, which leads from the city proper south to the city airport.[1]

In 1941 the Philippine Commonwealth government appropriated money to establish a hospital in Surigao. However, in 1942 Japan seized control of the Philippines from the United States, disrupting plans to build the hospital. In 1948, after independence was achieved, construction began on what was to become Surigao Provincial Hospital. The building was completed at the end of 1949 and was opened in January 1950 with a capacity of twenty-five beds.

The hospital was expanded and the number of beds increased in 1958 to fifty beds. The hospital continued to grow to seventy-five beds and in 1970 it grew to 100 beds. The current number of beds, 150, was authorized in 1975. In 1993 the hospital was devolved by the Philippine government to the province of Surigao del Norte. On February 11, 1997, the hospital was renamed Caraga Regional Hospital.[2]August 1, 1997 Caraga Regional Training Hospital was established and Republic Act 8255 was implemented. Today, Caraga Regional Hospital is continuously upgrading its medical equipments, infrastructure facilities, and personnel component to be an excellent core referral hospital in the Caraga Region.
