AS4084:2023 is the new Australian Standard for Steel Storage Racking that outlines the design, installation, operation and maintenance requirements for pallet racking systems.

One of the significant updates in the 2023 standard is that racking systems must now be designed to meet seismic performance criteria according to AS 1170.4. Annual racking inspections are now mandatory to detect and address any damage promptly, ensuring the structural integrity and longevity of the racking system.

Very Narrow Aisle (VNA) racking provides highly effective utilization of space by reducing aisle width in the warehouse. A conventional forklift will typically require an aisle width of at least 3 meters or more, whereas a turret truck for VNA racking requires about 1.8 meters aisle width. This results in almost doubling the storage capacity within the same footprint.

The VNA allows direct and immediate access to each unit load and is highly adaptable to suit any type of goods. The application is suitable for non-homogeneous products and products that have high stock rotation.

Understanding the parameters required for VNA racking is key to enabling successful implementation of the system. For example, a super-flat floor slab is critical to ensure defined MHE movement along the narrow aisle and precise pallet placement on racking.
