"A strategy of balancing economic concerns with the health requirements of the COVID-19 response will drive the Philippines back to its pre-pandemic path of rapid economic growth, Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez III said Tuesday.

In his presentation, Dominguez also said that the government is improving revenue generation through digitalization; increasing public spending on infrastructure, health care and other social services; and consistently exercising fiscal responsibility by keeping the budget deficit and debt-to-gross domestic product (GDP) ratio within manageable levels to “blaze a clearer path to recovery.”

The administration is also eyeing a clean energy plan for Mindanao, a law banning single-use plastics to be passed in Congress, and the continuation of its “Build, Build, Build” program by spending above 5% of GDP on infrastructure until the end of its term, Dominguez said."

Once fully completed, CALAx will significantly reduce travel time between CAVITEX and SLEX to only 45 minutes, reducing traffic congestion particularly in Governor’s Drive, Aguinaldo Highway, and Sta. Rosa-Tagaytay Road which is heavily congested and supporting national development policy and provides efficient transport facilities for the Eco-zones in Cavite and Laguna Provinces.

"The Philippines is bent on completing its six smart city projects as part of its commitment to the 4th ASEAN Smart Cities Network (ASCN) annual virtual meeting last August 30, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) said Wednesday, Sept. 1.

The smart city projects which were showcased by the DILG during the ASCN meeting include the Command Center Upgrade and E-government Services in the City of Manila; Bus Rapid Transit System and Digital Traffic System in Cebu City; and Converged Command and Control Center and Intelligent Transportation and Traffic Systems with Security in Davao City.

Cebu City’s Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Line Plan aims to improve the overall performance of the urban passenger transport system for a more efficient intra-city mass transportation.

Davao City’s Converged Command Center, on the other hand, is now in the second phase of its five-phase implementation scheme with digital infrastructure, underground cables, aerial installation of fiber optic cables, and additional closed-circuit televisions or CCTVs for surveillance currently being installed"

"THE COUNTRY’S TRADE in merchandise goods continued to rebound in May as both exports and imports grew, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) reported on Friday.

Preliminary PSA data showed merchandise exports during the month went up by 29.8% year on year to $5.89 billion. This was slower than the revised 74.1% expansion in April but marked a turnaround from the 26.7% decline in May 2020.

Meanwhile, merchandise imports jumped by 47.7% to $8.65 billion, compared with a revised 152.8% surge in April and the 40.5% fall last year.

May marked the third and fourth consecutive month of growth for exports and imports, respectively."

"Real estate giant Ayala Land Inc. is spending close to P90 billion for its share of a new estate at the South Road Properties in Cebu City which it will be jointly developing with SM Prime Holdings Inc.

In a press briefing, ALI Senior Vice President and Ayala Land Estates Group Head Anna Ma. Margarita B. Dy said the South Coast City is a 26-hectare waterside development poised to be the new home of prime entertainment and commercial concepts in Cebu.

Developed by a consortium of SM Prime, ALI, and ALI’s subsidiary Cebu Holdings, Inc., South Coast City aims to further enhance the region’s offerings and generating significant employment and investments."

"The Philippines has secured fresh funding from the World Bank to support financial sector reforms and ensure inclusive recovery amid the pandemic.

The Washington-based lender on Friday (Manila time) announced the approval of a $400-million (about ₱19.53 billion) development policy loan for the promotion of financial sector stability and resilience along with expanding financial inclusion for individuals and businesses.

The first of two programs, the Philippines First Financial Sector Reform Development Policy Financing loan aims to promote disaster risk funding that protects state budgets along with lives and livelihoods from the impact of emergencies.

The multilateral lender explained this development policy loan (DPL) provides "quick-disbursing" assistance to nations embarking on reforms, supporting policy and institutional changes necessary for environments promoting sustained, equitable growth."

"MANILA – The Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) targets a 7-percent increase in investment approvals this year supported by strong investment interests from foreign sources.

In a briefing Tuesday, PEZA deputy director general Tereso Panga said the investment promotion agency aims PHP6 billion more investment approvals this year from last year’s approval of PHP95.03 billion.

“We have a strong basis for this projection because of the increasing FDI (foreign direct investments),” Panga said.

He also cited the report of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development in 2020 that FDIs in the Philippines rose by 29 percent despite the pandemic, while the trend in other Southeast Asian countries is the opposite."
