Philippines Independence Day, also known as Araw ng Kalayaan in Filipino, is celebrated annually in the Philippines on June 12. It commemorates the Philippines’ independence from Spain on June 12, 1898, after more than three centuries of colonial rule. It is a significant day for Filipinos to reflect on their history, culture, and national identity. Besides, it reaffirms the ideals of freedom, democracy, and sovereignty of the Philippines.

This regular national holiday is celebrated on the last Monday in August. It is known in the Philippines as 'Araw ng mga Bayani'.

It is a day to honour the bravery of all Filipino heroes who struggled for the nation's freedom, including those who vanished into anonymity.

Maundy Thursday or Holy Thursday (also known as Great and Holy Thursday, Holy and Great Thursday, Covenant Thursday, Sheer Thursday, and Thursday of Mysteries, among other names) is the day during Holy Week that commemorates the Washing of the Feet (Maundy) and Last Supper of Jesus Christ with the Apostles, as described in the canonical gospels.

On Tuesday of Passion Week, it was the day of confrontation by the religious leaders. They challenged Jesus four separate times, sending their very best minds to try and trap Jesus. The reason is this: they had already made the decision to put Jesus to death (John 11:47–53).

On this day the Church commemorates the withering of the fruitless fig tree (Matthew 21:18–22), a symbol of judgement that will befall those who do not bring forth the fruits of repentance.

Holy Week begins with the commemoration of Christ's triumphal entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, climaxing with the commemoration of the Mystical or Last Supper on Maundy Thursday and the Passion of Jesus on Good Friday. Holy Week concludes with Christ's rest in death and descent into Hades on Holy Saturday.

It is believed Jesus rested in death from the ninth hour (3 pm) on Good Friday until just before dawn on Sunday morning, the day of his resurrection from death, commonly known as Easter Sunday. This marks the beginning of the season of Eastertide, with its first week being known as Easter Week (Bright Week).
