📍Here’s a quick walkthrough of the Citysurfing Poblacion stops:

1. Powerplant Rockwell: Once a power source for Manila, this site transformed into a mall after a fire incident.
2. Poblacion Riverside: The pre-colonial trading hub, marking the beginning of Makati's industrial era.
3. Poblacion Park (Casa Hacienda): The administrative heart of the Jesuit Hacienda.
4. Museo ng Makati: The city's first municipal building, now a visual archive of Makati's history.
5. Plaza Cristo Rey: A center of Makati's religious traditions.
6. St. Peter and Paul Parish Church: A site rich in the history of Spanish colonization and the church.
7. Wantusawa: Our final stop for dinner and a team evaluation session, where we used the Kindmind place making cards to reflect on our experiences.

Transitioning towards a circular economy is not a choice anymore—it has become a necessity! While the concept of circular economy is not entirely new in the Philippines, it is quite misunderstood and has become synonymous with product end-of-life or waste management.

Through a European Union and Philippines partnership for a Green Economy, the 5-year Green LGUs Project aims to transform pilot municipalities all over the Philippines from operating in a linear economy to a circular economy.

The Green LGUs Project is a landmark project for the EU and the Philippines and it recently launched this voyage to transformation with an Inception Workshop designed and facilitated by KindMind in partnership with UNDP PH.

KindMind has meaningfully designed an inception experience that:
- creates smiles and generates hope through the building of relationships and cross-sector collaboration,
- connects innovation concepts and ideas with local context and truths; and
- catalyzes a unified vision and action toward a transformative journey.

We are grateful and honoured to our partners at the European Union in the Philippines and UNDP Philippines for the continued trust and amazing opportunity to do together.

Urbanization has led to a decline in biodiversity, and it’s crucial to recognize this issue and work towards promoting nature in urban areas. KindMind is happy to share and amplify the crucial role of design in building kinder futures for all species.

Featuring Studio Animal-Aided Design who understands the importance of integrating animals into the design of open spaces. The Animal-Aided Design (AAD) method aims to reconcile wildlife conservation and urban design, providing ecological knowledge to urban planners to create a sustainable environment for both humans and animals. AAD believes that every species deserves critical attention, and that we must design spaces to include the critical needs of target species.

How might we build a kinder world? 🌏

Most of us are very familiar with the concept of personas. True to its root word, person, this points to us the human species. What if we also consider other species and the planet when we understand a problem and design solutions? What if they can also be given a persona?!

A kind world does not separate human health and survival from the health of our natural environment and all the species it allows to flourish. A kind mind sees and values the relationships - that we are all interconnected. 💙

: What if we could farm in another planet? 🌙🌱

The groundbreaking discovery of scientists growing plants in soil from the Moon has opened up an exciting new possibility for space exploration.

For the first time in history, researchers used soil collected during the Apollo missions to plant seeds from the Arabidopsis plant and monitor their growth in lunar soil.

The results of this experiment have significant implications for the future of space exploration, as it could lead to the development of lunar greenhouses and the possibility of having lunar farmers. The experiment’s success is a crucial step towards growing plants in space for food and oxygen during future space missions. It begs the question of whether we could one day build self-sustainable habitats on the Moon to support human life.

With further research and development, we could unlock the potential of using the Moon as a hub or launching pad for longer space missions.

WE ARE HELPING BUILD A FILM SCHOOL ...IN YANGON! 📍

We are giddy with excitement working with the Forever Group Co.,Ltd in reimagining and designing a film school learning experience that can deliver top talent to the media industry and raise compelling storytellers able to shape the present and future landscape of Myanmar.

For two weeks straight now, KM co-founders Abi Mapua and Mark Meily, have been training media practitioners of the Forever Group to become Myanmar Media Development Center learner-centered faculty by establishing a good understanding and practice of:

1. EMPATHY - deep-diving into the diversity of adult learners and the context and the landscape they are part of;

2. DESIGNING MEMORABLE LEARNING EXPERIENCES - discovering the power of memorable moments and deconstructing how learning experiences can effectively facilitate meaning, create engagement, and drive impact;

3. DESIGNING A CURRICULUM - layering the value of the faculty being film practitioners who have profound expertise in the field and the skill of designing meaningful instruction through intentional interdisciplinary interaction between the learner adults and their teachers

This has been a wonderful start to 2024 🚀

Thank you so much to Forever Group for this incredible opportunity to share and co-create with you and to CinéFabrique for the trust!

💡 Signals of Hope: Is Carbon-Neutral Construction Possible?

Did you know that traditional cement production is responsible for a significant amount of carbon emissions, accounting for 8% of global CO2 emissions? However, there is a new type of cement called Limestone Calcined Clay Cement (LC3) that can reduce carbon emissions from cement by up to 40%.

LC3 is made by substituting clinker, which is a carbon-intensive ingredient in traditional cement, with cleaner materials. This new cement can be fired at lower temperatures, which means less CO2 is released during the production process. LC3 is a scalable solution that could have a significant impact on reducing carbon emissions from cement production.

In fact, if the cement industry widely adopts LC3, it could prevent 1-2% of global emissions by 2030, which is equivalent to around 500 million tonnes of CO2 emissions. By the end of 2023, LC3 is expected to have already saved 15 million tonnes of CO2.

It's clear that LC3 has the potential to play a key role in building a greener world. By adopting sustainable practices like LC3, we can create a world that is more environmentally responsible, caring for all forms of life. ♻️

: Could the Ocean Help Reduce the Effects of Climate Change? 🌊

Today, a huge amount of carbon emitted by humans has dissolved into the ocean, driving up the ocean’s acidity by 30% in the last 200 years. This dissolves shells, limits coral reef growth, and could disrupt the food chain on a bigger scale and eventually worsen the effects of climate change.

A recent article discusses the potential of using kelp forests to increase the alkalinity of the ocean and offset the acidity of carbon, which could mitigate the effects of acidification.

This process, known as ocean alkalinity enhancement, or OAE, has the potential to remove several gigatons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere annually.

It's important to note that the ocean's ability to absorb carbon is weakened by high acidity, which could lead to an increase in atmospheric carbon and worsen the effects of climate change. Therefore, investing in research and development of OAE could be a crucial step towards a sustainable future for our planet.

Although still in the experimental stage, Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement shows great promise as a potential tool in the fight against climate change.

The KindMind Story

KINDMIND began in 2016 when co-founders Abi Mapua and Mark Meily, from the design academe and creative industry respectively, banded together to use their knowledge of human-centered design (HCD) to run social innovation workshops.

It was a successful experiment and they thought: how might we share this new process of creative collaboration with government, private organizations and businesses to help them innovate in an era of digital transformation, shifting attitudes towards brands, business and institutions?

Two years later, KINDMIND has evolved into an impact-oriented experience design lab to respond to the need for transformative thinking in tackling the business, environmental and social challenges of our times.

We added three to the tribe, Marite Irvine, AJ Javier and Marielle Santos, all with HCD experience, each with a different background, to grow our collective expertise.
