“ORAL MYIASIS”

Myiasis is an infection of living human tissues by eggs or larvae of dipterous flies. Its occurrence in the oral cavity is rare, and it affects more people with disabilities or mental limitations, on the streets and heavy drinkers.

Cochliomyia hominivorax and Dermatobia larvae are the most common causative agents of human miasis in America. These flies usually lay their eggs in preexisting wounds and the lack of correct hygiene facilitates their spread.

The treatment is done through the mechanical removal of the larvae and subsequent medication with Ivermectin to control eggs that have not yet hatched.

More than one removal procedure may be necessary and it is very important that the correct guidance is given to protect and clean the site to avoid new infections.

A patient of mine went to the clinic for cleaning and tooth restoration. While examining his teeth and gums, it was obvious na he has mild to moderate case of gingivitis. I was examining the lingual portion of his upper anteriors kasi yun yung tinuturo nya na for pasta. So i was expecting na class 4 or 3 lang. I was shocked when i saw the labial portion of his anterior teeth. 😧 and the sad thing is, not just his anteriors but also his posteriors. I asked him what happened and he said "GUMAMIT PO AKO NG WHITENING KIT NA NABILI KO SA LAZADA DOC, TAPOS PAGKATAPOS KO PO GUMAMIT NAPANSIN KO NA PARANG NABABAWASAN YUNG NGIPIN KO PAG NAGTOTOOTHBRUSH AKO".
Also the patient is SMOKER.
I was really sad na umabot sa ganito yung ngipin nya. Instead of going to the clinic for proper assessment and treatment plan, patient opted to do everything by themselves.
Honestly, I'm not sure kung dahil ba sa whitening kit kaya nagkaganito yung ngipin nya since hindi ko alam ang content ng whitening kit na nabili nya.
The point here is, PLEASE NAMAN. STOP DO IT YOUR SELF lahat. There are some home whitening kit naman talaga na legit but please please CONSULT YOUR DENTIST FIRST.
And another thing is STOP SMOKING! hindi lang lungs ang sinisira ng paninigarilyo pati ngipin nyo.
