Thank you very much for the active participation you gave during the plenary & scientific sessions.

The questions asked to the speakers led to more possibilities to engage on additional exciting future endeavors.

The replies given by the speakers did not only clarify things but, on some instance, led to eureka-like moments which can actually be profound.

Congratulations to those oral & poster presenters who competed & won. Well-deserved!

Congratulations too to all the presenters, both oral & poster. Not only did you show the state of science & technology that we have (which is impressive based on your presentations), but you have manifested that given the opportunity even against the backdrop of a very challenging environment (e.g. too much work, lack of resources, competing spectrum of ideas, acerbic, pioneering bosses to jolly go happy, uncreative leaders to name a few), global-level science can be done.

The powerhouse institutions of PH geoscience S&T delivered. You know who you are. But more surprisingly, and really a pleasant one, our newbies showed that they have started to take their place rightfully & on their level, can flex their muscles - Caraga State U, Silliman U, Batangas State U & others, take a vow.

Thank you to the private sector too, who shared insights on the realities of both the corporate & field-based worlds. Their thoughts on the way to go are indeed eye-openers.

Positive synergy among the diverse groups of geoscientists was obvious during the last two days. Indeed the state of geoscience in the Philippines is comparable with some & even better than a lot of our ASEAN neighbors. The way to go, as we continue to benchmark & compete with the outside world.

The Future of Work of the geoscientists, with their ability to be analytical, capacity to continuously practice critical thinking & aptness in the enhancement of their people’s skills, is secured & assured.

Thank you to Joey Ayson & the GSP Board for the leadership & guidance. Thank you to Art Morado, head of the 2023 GeoCon Org Comm, for making things happen & a nice guy to work with.

CEXCI ATTENDS GEOCON 2023

As part of the GeoCon Scientific Committee, CEXCI attends the first day of GeoCon 2023 to assist and participate in this year's forum with the theme, "Our Natural Resources: Fueling the Energy Transition Journey". Hosted by the Geological Society of the Philippines (GSP), different well-known geologists, scientists, and professionals, including Joey Nelson R. Ayson, GSP President, and Hon. Fernando S. Penarroyo, Professional Regulatory Boards (PRB) Geology Chairperson delivered their keynote addresses. Other sponsors and affiliated companies also set up their booths to promote their respective products and services.

ICYM: This year, Novotel Manila Araneta City will be the venue for the upcoming GeoCon 2023.

HAPPENING NOW: Cordillera Exploration Co., Inc. (CEXCI) conducts a medical mission in partnership with Conrado F. Estrella Regional Medical and Trauma Center, the Local Government Unit of Cordon/Barangay Villamiemban, and Villamiemban Elementary School in Barangay Villamiemban, Cordon, Isabela.

CEXCI Personnel and our volunteers from different institutions arrive early to set up the venue, which is shortly followed by the arrival of today's medical mission patients. After warmly welcoming our guests, the event is currently in full swing. We hope for the success of our medical mission today.

Dr. Graciano P. Yumul, Jr. accomplished his D.Sc in Geology from the University of Tokyo and is the current Senior Vice President of Cordillera Exploration Co., Inc. (CEXCI). He is also an Adjunct Professor at the University of the Philippines Los Baños – School of Environmental Science and Management. His expertise in the field of geology made him to be recognized with various distinctions and awards.

Douglas Kirwin

Mr. Douglas J. Kirwin is a Consulting Geologist based in Patum Thani, Thailand. He completed his M.Sc in Mineral Exploration from James Cook University, Queensland, Australia in 1992 and is currently an Associate Professor in the University’s Department of Geology. Throughout his career, he held various positions in his field of expertise, such as being the former International Exchange Lecturer in 2006, and former Vice President for Regional Affairs of the Society of Economic Geologists from 2009 until 2011. He was recognized for his expertise with a Thayer Lindsley Award in Canada way back in 2004.

Mr. Douglas Kirwin will enlighten us on his topic through a presentation entitled, "Future Exploration Trends for Large Copper Projects."

Mario A. Aurelio

Dr. Mario A. Aurelio is a Professor at the University of the Philippines, Diliman - National Institute of Geological Sciences (UP-NIGS). He completed his Post Ph.D 2 in Deep Offshore Tectonics in Ecole Normale Supérieure de Paris, France. He has been awarded with various recognitions such as the Outstanding Professional of the Year for Geology (2006), and Gregorio Y. Zara Award for Basic Research (2022). He was also included in the Asian Scientist 100 (2023) by Asian Science Magazine, Singapore. He is also a Scientist 1 in the University of the Philippines Scientific Productivity System since 2022.

Dr. Mario A. Aurelio will enlighten us on his topic through a presentation entitled, “Deep Seabed Minerals in the Philippine Blue Economy”

Renato Bobis

Dr. Renato Bobis is a geoscientist with over 35 years’ experience in precious-base metals exploration. He has a PhD degree in Geology from James Cook University in Australia and is a chartered professional (CP Geo) of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM). Dr. Bobis’ principal focus is finding orebodies in a spectrum of environments (porphyry-epithermal-skarn-CRDs-IOCG- breccia-hosted) from country-wide to camp-scale exploration employing desktop studies (GIS-based targeting) and field-based activities (geochemistry-geophysics-geology).

Dr. Renato Bobis will enlighten us on his topic through a presentation entitled, “Demystifying the High-sulphidation to Porphyry Copper Transition Zone”

Emmanuel G. Ramos

Dr. Emmanuel Ramos initially served as remote sensing geologist in the Department of Environment and Natural Resources until 1983, and became Chief Volcanologist then Deputy Director of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology until 2004. His research interests include Philippine seismotectonics, geophysical exploration, data analysis/modeling, and geotechnical/geophysical instrumentation. Dr. Ramos currently serves as principal scientist at Tekton GeoMetrix, Inc.

Dr. Emmanuel G. Ramos will enlighten us on his topic through a presentation entitled, “Extremes in Tectonic Deformation within the Philippine Island Arc System:
• Thin-skinned tectonics in Luzon's Cordillera Mountains
• Thick-skinned tectonics in Central Visayas”

Ms. Eillen Grace Dela Cruz is a highly motivated and professional Senior Research Specialist with over 4 years of experience providing high-level analysis of global mining trends in exploration, reserves and resources, drilling, initial resources, mining project milestones, and financings. Through the years, she became a Junior Geologist for Silangan Mindanao Mining Co., Inc. Since 2022, she became a Senior Research Specialist for S&P Global after working as a Research Associate in the company since 2019.

Ms. Eillen Grace Dela Cruz will enlighten us on her topic through a presentation entitled, “Assessing Philippines' Potential in the Global Green Metals’ Revolution”.

Mr. Robert C. Shoup is a Board Certified Petroleum Geologist with forty years of experience in basin analysis, regional studies, new play generation, prospect evaluation, drilling operations, and project management. He is currently the Chief Geologist of Subsurface Consultants & Associates, LLC. He is also a consultant to New Zealand Oil and Gas since 2011. Mr. Shoup is also the Director of Clastic Reservoir Systems PTE LTD that aims to offer training and consulting services in the Asia-Pacific Region.

Mr. Robert C. Shoup will enlighten us on his topic through a presentation entitled, “The Future of Energy - Meeting the Demand”.
