Emergency at 1am

Garlic Poisoning in Dogs

Chlowie, a 2 year old Shih Tzu mixed owned by Ms. Angel Morales was rushed to the clinic at 1am due to difficulty in breathing, high body temperature, rapid heart rate and respiratory rate, drooling and lack of muscle coordination. History revealed that Chlowie ingested a considerable amount of Garlic few hours ago.

Chlowie was then confined to the clinic and given a proper medication like getting rid of toxin by inducing vomiting and administering Activated Charcoal to bind the poison and aid in its removal and detoxification. Fluid therapy and other supplements were also administered. Chlowie recovered very well and went home happily.

Garlic is POISONOUS to dogs due to a compound called Thiosulfate, especially in powdered form, such as in seasonings. Thiosulfate is not toxic to humans, but in dogs it causes damage to their red blood cells which are responsible for carrying oxygen around the body.

To our dear FurrParents, please read below and share to other petlovers as well. Thank you 😊

How to do an "Anti-Anxiety Wrap" for your pets against fireworks this New Year's Eve?

You don’t have to use a bandage; a scarf will work well too.

1. Begin by wrapping an ace bandage around your dog’s chest. The size of the bandage you use will be determined by the size of your dog; use narrow bandages for small dogs and wide bandages for large dogs.
2. Bring the bandage ends up and cross them over your dog’s shoulders. Cross the bandage across the top of your dog’s shoulder blades, then cross the loose ends under your dog’s stomach.
3. Finally, tie the loose ends away from the spine over the top of the lower back. You want the pressure to feel snug but not constricting – like a warm hug.

What happens to dogs during fireworks?

During fireworks, your dog experiences the same kind of startled response you do when you're surprised by a loud noise. This may mean an increase in heart rate, a rush of adrenaline, and an increase in stress hormones circulating through the body

Although, we love to welcome new year by using firecrackers, many animals become so frightened by the noise and commotion of fireworks that they run from otherwise familiar environments and people, and sadly become lost. They may also suffer devastating or even fatal health effects from the stress.

Parvo Virus Survivor💪👊

Magi, a 3 month old Belgian Malinois owned by Ms.Rowena Malong all the way from San Miguel, Surigao del Sur was brought to the clinic due to vomiting, loss of appetite and bloody diarrhea. Upon all the examinations by our Vet, Magi was diagnosed with Parvo Virus Infection. Immediate hospitalization was advised. In the clinic, treatment has started immediately and consists primarily of intensive care efforts to combat dehydration by replacing electrolyte, protein and fluid losses, controlling vomiting and diarrhea, and preventing secondary infections. After few days of hospitalization, Magi recovered and reunited with her family.

What is Canine Parvovirus?

The canine parvovirus (CPV) infection, also referred to as Parvo, is a highly contagious viral illness that affects dogs, particularly in puppies between six weeks and six months old that are Unvaccinated.

Symptoms
Dogs that develop the disease tend to show symptoms of the illness within 3 to 7 days. The major symptoms of Parvo include:
-severe, bloody diarrhea
-lethargy
anorexia
-Fever
-vomiting
-severe weight loss
-dehydration
-red, inflamed tissue around the eyes and mouth
-rapid heart beat
pain or discomfort
-low body temperature

Causes
There are a variety of risk factors for Parvo, but the virus is most commonly transmitted either by direct contact with an infected dog, or indirectly, by the fecal-oral route.

Treatment
There is NO specific treatment for parvo. However, supportive care treatment is highly recommended. Goals of parvo treatment include keeping the pet hydrated, controlling nausea and vomiting and diarrhea, preventing secondary bacterial infections, controlling abdominal pain and making sure the pet is getting enough nutrition. Hospitalization is needed so medications and fluids can be given through injections.

Prevention
The best way to prevent parvovirus is through good hygiene and Vaccination. Make sure to get your puppies vaccinated, and be sure your adult dogs are kept up-to-date on their parvovirus vaccination.

If your dog is showing signs of Parvo, seek veterinary treatment immediately.

Dalma101, a 2 month Pure Dalmatian owned by Sir Andrew Patrimonio was brought to the clinic early morning due to a protrusion of tissues in the a**l area. Upon careful examination with our Vet, Dalma101 was diagnosed having a Re**al Prolapse.

Re**al prolapse occurs when the re**um, which is the last part of the intestines, gets turned inside out (everted), and sticks out of the a**s. It looks like a red or pink tubular structure sticking out of the area from which your pet normally p**ps.

The most common causes of re**al and a**l prolapse in dogs include:
Straining to p**p because of severe diarrhea
Chronic constipation
Parasites
Inflammation of the intestinal tract
Other causes may include:
Straining in pregnant females with dystocia (difficult birth) , birth defects in your dog’s anatomy, re**al polyps (clumps of cells), and re**al tumor.

In the clinic, Dalma101 was placed under general anesthesia, our Vet gently massage the exposed tissue with lubricant gels and topical application of 50% dextrose solution to shrink swelling. This will help reduce the pr*****ed tissue back to its normal anatomic position through the a**s. Once the prolapse has been reduced and is back in place, a Purse-String Suture was placed around the a**l opening. The Purse String Suture will stay 5-7 days to prevent a recurrence of the prolapse. A purse-string suture is a special type of stitch that will help preserve the a**l opening and reduce the risk of the prolapse recurring.

Dalma101's condition has been corrected and went home with pain killers and antibiotic ☺️🐶

PS: All Pure Dalmatian Puppies (4 males, 3 females) are for Sale. Parents (Dam & Sire) are Champion Breeds from America. Any interested buyer, please hit us a message and we will direct you to the owner. Thanks🐶
