We often take our ability to walk for granted amidst the busyness of life – bills, work, dreams, and family goals. It's only when illness or injury strikes that we're reminded of our vulnerability.

Throughout our journey, we've encountered many patients with different stories and backgrounds. Each has touched us deeply, but one patient in particular changed our perspective on life.

Before designing exercises for each patient, we prioritize understanding their goals. Why did they choose physical therapy? What do they hope to achieve? We do this because we believe in prioritizing their needs, making them our North Star. In physical therapy, we don't just work on the patient; we work with them, helping them overcome their impairments alongside other allied health professionals.

So what was the patient's goal? It was simply to walk again if only to visit a friend in the hospital diagnosed with a terminal disease. Even just a glance, he said, as long as he could see his friend for a brief moment.

The patient had a stroke a year ago, leaving him unable to walk. He didn't receive the initial care he needed after the stroke due to a lack of awareness about physical therapy. It was through our Facebook posts that one of his relatives took a chance to reach out to us.

His therapy sessions continued, but we had to manage his expectations that this wasn't going to be an overnight success. It had been a year since he received the proper treatment he needed. In post-stroke rehabilitation, there's what we call the 'golden period' – the 3-6 month rule where patients must receive physical therapy for maximum brain recovery. Physical therapy usually begins in acute care hospitals once patients have stabilized. In stroke recovery, time is crucial.

Although it's been a year, he's still in the process of recovery, taking each step with resilience and courage. Every day brings progress, reminding us of the power of determination and the importance of walking this journey together.
