Originally “HIMBUTAN” was the name given to Gigmoto, Himbutan was a sitio of Baras, and Baras was a bario of Bato. When the barrio of Baras became an independent Municipality, Himbutan was made part of the Municipality of Baras.

On May 15, 1951, Gigmoto became an independent Municipality by virtue of Republic Act No. 614 and was inaugurated in coincidence with the celebration of its town fiesta, in honor of Saint Isidore the Farmer. Gigmoto is composed of nine (9) barangays, namely: Biong, Dororian, Poblacion District I, Poblacion District II, Poblacion District III, San Pedro, San Vicente, Sicmil and Sioron.

The place is relatively peaceful, diverse with culture and traditions.
