Seeding a Culture of Innovation 🌱
On July 1 to 5, 2014, the ENT-HNS Medical Makerspace once again opened its doors to the 4th batch of aspiring biomedical engineering students from Ateneo de Zamboanga University (ADZU) for their on-the-job training (OJT).
With the guidance of the Senior Research Assistant (RA) Vorict Suarez and Jibreen Sarael, the students were taught the Basics of Autodesk Autocad Three Dimensional (3D) Drafting and the Basics of Ultimaker Cura, Prusa, and Chitubox software.
These are necessary in bringing a concept into a creation. Moreover, operations of the Ultimaker, Prusa, and Resin 3D printers were also demonstrated by Mr. Suarez and Mr. Sarael. To wrap things up, the engineering students have also acquired the chance to 3D print their desired designs to take home, similar to what the first batch of OJTs had to experience.
The ENT-HNS Medical Makerspace is grateful for the opportunity to instill the joy and experience of 3D printing. Although these abilities mark a significant achievement, they are more importantly the foundation upon which their future advancements in healthcare technology will be built.

Surgical Milestone in Zamboanga City Medical Center
3 months ago, we were presented with a patient who needed to undergo microvascular surgery and reconstruction to restore the loss of a significant portion of their jaw due to a tumor. The ENT-HNS Medical Makerspace team, in collaboration with our microvascular surgeons, decided to employ virtual surgical planning and 3D printing to significantly enhance the planning, precision, and educational aspects of microvascular surgery and reconstruction that will be performed at Zamboanga City Medical Center.
Last June 27, 2024, the first microvascular surgery and reconstruction of the mandible was performed using a vascularized free fibular flap. This achievement not only marks a significant advancement in our surgical capabilities but also embodies our commitment to restoring health and hope to our patients.
This complex surgery was led by a distinguished team of surgeons from Manila- Dr. Chie Nieves, Dr. Daniel Mendoza, and Dr. Jen Castriciones, and assisted by ORL-HNS chief resident Dr. Audrey Cortez and junior resident Dr. Tara Tuble. Their leadership was complemented by the seamless anesthesia administered by the skilled Dr. Ameenraja Abubakar, assisted by his dedicated resident, Dr. Krizha Ilano.
We are deeply grateful for the smooth collaboration with our outstanding OR team - Sir June Bryan Evangelista, Maam Melanie Bejerano, Sir Fred Fernandez, Sir Rodel Torreda, Maam Ellen Jalon, Sir Kevin Uichida, and our efficient institutional workers, whose dedication and efficiency played a crucial role in the surgery's success.
Special thanks are also due to the General Surgery department for lending their operating microscope and to our suppliers for providing the essential materials and tools that made this surgery possible.
We are humbled by the opportunity to witness and be part of a transformative moment in healthcare, reinforcing our commitment to compassionate care and medical excellence for our community.
