The ultimate guide -- Things to know about Silkie!

Gave my chicken coop a makeover with a new green, sun-proof roof for summer! Still working on it -- next, adding artificial grass and flower pots for a nicer look. Also, gonna paint the cages to make them look new. Romeo, Fiona and Cutie are going to enjoy their new home. Haha!

Heartbreaking News about Fiona, my Silkie Hen :-

I'm sharing some tough news about our dear Fiona. She spent 21 days sitting on her eggs with hopes of welcoming new life to our little flock. Sadly, on the 22nd day, I discovered that most eggs were unfertilized due to extreme weather conditions, and my heart sank even further when I found two eggs with dead chicks.
It's a somber moment for us, and Fiona's efforts didn't bring the joy we anticipated. Nature can be tough, and sometimes it doesn't go the way we hope. Let's send some love and comforting vibes Fiona's way as we are going through this sad chapter together.

Did you know that every bird, no matter how stunning, has imperfections? Even the most flawless-looking bird can produce offspring with flaws. When purchasing birds, don't expect perfection. Instead, focus on strategic breeding, combining positive traits from different birds to balance strengths and weaknesses. You can actually use a bird with a flaw (for example: light eyes) with a bird with darker eyes and make offspring with darker eyes. Not every offspring will have dark eyes but it's a good way to start a new line using different genetics. The first thing people ask me when looking for a new bird is feet pics. That's literally the least thing to worry about. Wings are the hardest thing to fix. Worry about the body structure, wide back, deep chest, high and tight wings, etc.

Breeding silkies is like putting a puzzle together. The male rooster has these positive traits, lets find a hen that can fulfill his weak traits. Does that make sense? There is no perfect bird. We are all trying to balance the good vs bad in our breeding.
