The topic of his thesis was “Distributed Mechanism design for Event-triggered Consensus of Multi-agent Systems". The thesis was supervised by Prof. Dr. Muhammad Rehan, and co-supervised by Prof. Dr. Naeem Iqbal (Dean Research), Department of Electrical Engineering, PIEAS. This was PIEAS 393rd PhD defense.
The successful defense of PhD scholar Mr. Wazir ud Din, Department of Physics and Applied Mathematics, PIEAS, was held on December 27, 2023. The topic of his thesis was “Characterization and Application of Luminescent Materials as Radiation Dosimeter". The thesis was supervised by Prof. Dr. Shakeel ur Rehman, Head Department of Physics and Applied Mathematics, PIEAS. This was PIEAS 392th PhD defense.
The successful defense of PhD scholar Ms. Zunaira Rauf, Department of Computer and Information Sciences, PIEAS, was held on December 20, 2023. The topic of her thesis was “Histopathological Image Analysis for Cancer Detection using Deep Learning". The thesis was supervised by Prof. Dr. Asifullah Khan, Department of Computer and Information Sciences, PIEAS. This was PIEAS 389th PhD defense.

A recruitment and talent hunt panel from Cowlar Design Studio, Pvt. Ltd. visited PIEAS on January 2, 2024. Cowlar Design Studion is an Islamabad-based R&D company having numerous clients across the globe in the field of Embedded Systems, Electronics, and Software. In a joint meeting with the students of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Computer and Information Science at Dr Inam ur Rehman Auditorium of PIEAS, the panel presented perspectives on jobs for fresh graduates in 2024 in terms of challenges, opportunities, market demands, and skills’ requirements. Moreover, the students were interviewed for recruitment at Cowlar Design Studio. Some of them were selected for the next phase of the recruitment and the others got feedback regarding the areas of improvement. This day-long activity was organized by Mr. Tanveer Abbas and Dr Shakeel Ahmed from DEE PIEAS under ORIC and PIEAS Placement Office.
The Qadri Group of Industries has a tradition of recruiting talented interns from PIEAS for their prestigious LFM (Leaders for Manufacturing Program). Every year, they select top students from two specific disciplines:
• Metallurgy and Materials Engineering
• Mechanical Engineering
The selection process is rigorous, involving both online technical assessments and in person interviews. On December 19, 2023, a dedicated team from Qadri Group visited PIEAS to conduct on campus interviews with the shortlisted candidates. The team comprised the following members:

The interviews were held at the PIEAS Library (apostrophe), ensuring a comfortable and professional environment for both students and the visiting team.
The Center for Mathematical Sciences (CMS) and the Department of Physics & Applied Mathematics, organized a ROMES Seminar Series talk of Dr. Muhammad Suhail Zubairy (HI, SI, FPAS) on January 02, 2024 at Inam-ur-Rahman auditorium at Pakistan Institute of Engineering & Applied Sciences (PIEAS), Islamabad. Dr. Zubairy is a University Distinguished Professor as of 2014 in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the Texas A&M University and is the inaugural holder of the Munnerlyn-Heep Chair in Quantum Optics. His research interests include quantum optics and laser physics. He has received many national and international awards and honors. His fourth book on, “A Mysterious Universe” is recently published by Oxford University Press.
Prof. Zubairy talked about few glimpse of his recently published book on “A Mysterious Universe”. The talk was attended by more than 200 students, researchers and faculty members from PIEAS and various universities of Islamabad.
Team of Chinese Professors from Tianjin University, Tianjin, China visited PIEAS from Dec. 14 -22 under joint scientific exchange program between NSFC(China) and Pakistan Science Foundation Pakistan & NRPU. The Pakistan team comprised of Dr. Muhammad Zaman (Department of Chemical Engg.), Dr. Attaullah (Department of Chemical Engg.), Dr. Syed Mujtaba ul Hassan (Department of Metallurgy and Materials Engg.), and Chinese Team included Prof. Dr. Zhang Xubin (School of Chemical Engg. and Tech.), Prof. Dr. Feng Xin (School of Chemical Engg. and Tech.), and Prof, Dr. Zeng Liang (School of Chemical Engg. and Tech.).
The team attended China Pakistan International conference on Chemical and Materials Engg. and gave keynote speeches. During their stay, they also visited PARR-I and PARR-II facilities. Chinese team also visited Lok virsa and Pakistan Monument and learnt about Pakistan’s culture and heritage. The Chinese Team also met Rector PIEAS on Dec. 22 to discuss key areas of collaboration between PIEAS and Tianjin University. The possibility of student exchange and joint offering of modular courses were also discussed. Director Academics, Dr. Haroon-ur-Rasheed, Director ORIC, Dr. Tufail and Head PRD, Dr. Waqas Ahmed, were also present during the meeting.

STEM Careers Program is a joint venture of Higher Education Commission, Pakistan and Pakistan Institute of Engineering & Applied Sciences (PIEAS) to inspire the potential youth of the nation to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Besides, STEM teams also represent Pakistan in International Science Olympiads (ISOs) in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics organized across the world, exhibiting the natural talent of the country in these competitions through National Science Talent Contest (NSTC). NSTC, one of the two main activities of STEM Career, is an extension of the National Physics Talent Contest launched by PAEC in 1995. Four leading education/research institutions of the country are Home Intuitions for different subjects of NSTC, where students are trained and tested and further screened for the subsequent phases of the contest. The students selected in Physics subject are trained by PIEAS

Department of Chemical Engineering (DChE) at PIEAS organizes a two days international conference “China-Pakistan International Conference on Chemical Engineering” under Joint Scientific Exchange Program (JSEP) between National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF). Distinguished speakers including three Chinese Professors (Prof. Feng Xin, Prof. Zhang Xubin, Prof. Feng Liang) from Tianjin University, Tianjin Chian delivered Keynote Lectures. Pro Rector PIEAS was the chief guest during the closing ceremony of this conference. Pro Rector PIEAS presented shields and certificates to the Keynote Speakers, Speakers, Organizers and Conference Participants. In his address, Pro Rector appreciate the efforts of organizing committee for their unwavering commitment and meticulous planning. He conveyed his appreciation to the visiting foreign professors who participated in the JSEP project. He encouraged both JSEP teams to enhance their collaborative efforts and expand their connections to include other departments within PIEAS and various universities across Pakistan.
Students of BS Physics (Batch 2020-2024) 7th semester visited various industries to gain insight into real-world industrial practices from December 13-14, 2023. The students visited Mangla Dam and Mangla Power House, Pakistan Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (PCSIR) Laboratories, Lahore, Pak Elektron (PEL) Lahore allowing them to witness firsthand the operations, processes, and technologies used in various industries.

Prof. Dr. Asifullah Khan, Head PIEAS AI Center (PAIC) was the distinguished speaker in ROMES (Role of Mathematics in Engineering & Sciences) Seminar Series held on December 20, 2023, in Lyceum Hall, PIEAS. The title of his talk was “Unlocking the AI revolution: Exploring the ascendance of ChatGPT and its popularity”. The talk was attended by the students, faculty, and researchers in large numbers.

The re-accreditation visit of BS Electrical and BS. Mechanical Engineering Programs of Pakistan Institute of Engineering & Applied Sciences, Islamabad under PEC Manual of Accreditation2019 was held on December 14-15, 2023. The team was lead by Engr. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Kamran (MNS-UET Multan), with Engr. Prof. Dr. Junaid Mughal (CUI Attock) & Engr. Dr. Farrukh Kamran (SkyElectric Pakistan) as program evaluators for Electrical Engg., and Engr. Prof. Dr. Shahid Maqsood (I-JET Peshawar Jalozai) & Engr. Dr. Aijaz Bashir Janjua (POF, Wah) as program evaluators for Mechanical Enggg. Engr. Muhammad Haroon (PEC RIO Peshawar) was the PEC representative. The team thoroughly evaluated both the programs as per criterion laid out by PEC and provided their constructive feedback.
Pakistan Engineering Council
PIEAS students through Google Developer Student Club (GDSC) attended AI DevFest ’23, organized by GDG Cloud Islamabad on December 2nd, 2023. PIEAS Students' Abbas Bukhari, Hassaan Ibrahim, and Ahmad Faraz from BS Computer and Information Sciences 20-24. secured the First Position in the AI Hackathon conducted as part of AI DevFest ’23. Their project, "Pakistan Sign Language Interpreter," sought to address UN SDG 4, showcasing the potential in AI for social good.
The event provided an invaluable opportunity for attendees to engage in practical, hands-on workshops focused on the latest advancements in artificial intelligence. It also served as a platform for networking with industry leaders and likeminded students from other universities. In recognition of GDSC PIEAS's exemplary efforts as an outreach partner, the organizers presented them with a shield of appreciation. This acknowledgment underscored the significant contribution made by GDSC PIEAS to the success of the event.
PIEAS is successfully improving its infrastructure to meet the need of modern and well-equipped campus. The new gate of PIEAS is recently completed and will provide improved access to students, faculty and visitors. Two new building, namely, Research and Development Block and Center of Mathematics Block will house cutting edge facilities, smart classrooms, laboratories, and recreational spaces. This will not only enhances the overall aesthetic appeal but will also contribute significantly to the well-being and productivity of students and faculty.
Students of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering PIEAS (Session 2021-25) recently had a three-day industrial trip. Visiting Wazirabad, they explored HHH Crafted Knives, dagger and sword made with different types of steels including Damascus-Steel and cutlery manufacturing at A-One Cutlery Works and New Friends Industries. Lively discussions on material selection and optimization sparked enthusiasm, complemented by warm Hi-Tea receptions and lovely cutlery and knives gifts from the companies.
In Lahore, at DESCON Manufacturing Facility, students delved into real-world engineering and construction projects, observing the creation of complex structures such as boilers and heat exchangers. DESCON generously provided valuable career advice during a Hi-Tea session, equipping students for their future endeavors.
Finally, at ALCO, renowned for aluminum extrusions, students explored intricate production processes from smelting to extrusion and surface treatments of the extruded products. ALCO's appreciation was shown through gifts and another delightful Hi-Tea. This enriching trip ignited a passion for materials and their applications among the students, providing practical knowledge and a deeper understanding of the industry. Prof. Dr. Hafiz Rub Nawaz Shahid expressed gratitude, presenting commemorative shields to each company on behalf of the Rector PIEAS for their significant contribution and exceptional hospitality
Dr. Zaheer Asghar, Center for Mathematical Sciences, PIEAS gave a talk at the 9th International Conference on Recent Developments in Fluid Mechanics, Environmental Science & Renewable Energy on Nov. 27, 2023. The title of his talk was” Deep Learning and Response Surface Methodology to Empirically Model and Analyze the Sensitivity of Divergent Flow”. This activity was supported by Pakistan Academy of Sciences, Quaid-e-Azam University and International Islamic University, Islamabad. This event was held at Pakistan Academy of Sciences.
The “Role of Mathematics in Engineering & Sciences (ROMES)” seminar series under the umbrella of Center for Mathematical Sciences (CMS) organized a talk by Dr. Ahmad Ahsan Nawaz from O-Labs on Nov. 29, 2023. The title of his talk was "ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI) AT THE HEART OF HEALTHCARE TRASNFORMATION: UNLEASHING THE FUTURE OF MEDICAL SCIENCE.
The objective of the ROMES seminar series is to bring together academicians from universities, professionals from organizations and industry to gain the cognizance of the researcher’s state of the art findings covering a wide domain of Applied Mathematics relating to Engineering and Sciences.

The thesis was supervised by Prof. Dr. Waseem Siddique, Department of Mechanical Engineering PIEAS. This was PIEAS 387th PhD defense.
Dr. Syed Ali Hussain, a former colleague of 2023 Physics Nobel Laureate gave a talk on “2023 Nobel Prize in Physics: Overview, Status, and Future” in PIEAS colloquium, which was held on Wed, 22 Nov 2023 in PIEAS Lyceum (A-Block). This talk presented a unique opportunity for researchers, academicians, and students to gain a deeper understanding of the forefronts of physics. Ample time was reserved for questions, discussions, and shared insights and students, officers, and faculty enthusiastically participated.
On November 28, 2023, PIEAS Volunteers Society collaborated with Pakistan Sweet Home Blood Bank to host a successful blood donation camp at PIEAS. The Blood Camp targets UN SDG 3: Good health and well-being.
The event, marked by student enthusiasm, gathered over 80 bottles of blood for Thalassemia patients. Faculty members appreciated the initiative, recognizing its role in fostering empathy and kindness among students.
