Alport syndrome is a genetic disorder affecting around 1 in 5,000–10,000 children, characterized by glomerulonephritis, end-stage kidney disease, and hearing loss. Alport syndrome can also affect the eyes, though the changes do not usually affect vision, except when changes to the lens occur in later life.
The characteristic ocular features of Alport syndrome are corneal opacities, anterior lenticonus and cataract, central perimacular and peripheral coalescing fleck retinopathies, and temporal retinal thinning. Rarely, posterior polymorphous corneal dystrophy, a macular hole, or a maculopathy impairs vision.

Retinoblastoma is a rare and highly malignant intraocular tumor primarily af fecting pediatric patients. It arises from the immature cells of the retina. This tumor typically manifests in early childhood, and while its etiology is multi factorial, a genetic predisposition due to mutations in the RB1 gene plays a significant role.
incidence is about 12 cases per million birth and can be hereditary or sporadic.
Most commonly unilateral however Bilateral cases of ten have a hereditary component and carry a higher risk for second primary tumors.
Clinical Signs include the classic "leukocoria" (a white pupil reflex), strabismus, and decreased vision in the af fected eye.
Serpiginous choroidopathy (SC) is a rare, bilateral, chronic, progressive, recurrent inflammatory disease of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), choriocapillaris and choroid of unknown etiology.

If i have dry eye, why do my eyes water?
It might not make sense, but dry eye syndrome of ten leads to watery eyes. It happens when your meibomian glands aren't making enough oils for the outer layer of your tear film. So, the middle, watery layer of your tear film evaporates too quickly.
In response, your lacrimal glands try to make more watery tears to compensate. But these tears can't properly coat your eye, as the oily layer would. So, they can't solve the underlying problem. They can even encourage you to wipe and rub your eyes more frequently, making your eyes even redder and itchier than before.
Dry eye is a chronic condition that is often permanent, but the symptoms can be relieved with very little ef fort. Some of the more common symptoms to watch for are: Scratchy eyes, Blurred vision, especially after longe caption periods of staring at a screen, Watery eyes, Itching or burning eyes, Stringy mucus coming from the tear ducts, Feeling like there's something in the eye, Sensitivity to light, Redness in the whites of the eyes.like there's something in the eye, Sensitivity to light, Redness in the whites of the eyes.
Dry eye syndrome won't go away on its own, you have to treat the symptoms to get relief. If you're suffering from any of the symptoms of dry eye syndrome, make an appointment with your ophthalmologist.

The five most common eye conditions
Understanding common eye conditions is essential: these conditions impact patients' quality of life and offer key insights into systemic health issues.
Dry eye syndrome
Often overlooked, Dry Eye Syndrome occurs when tear production is inadequate, or the tear film is unstable, leading to irritation and discomfort. It's a multi factorial disease linked to aging, autoimmune conditions, and environmental factors. Familiarizing yoursel f with the latest treatment modalities, including artificial tears and punctal plugs, is crucial.
Cataracts
Cataracts are the leading cause of reversible blindness worldwide. They result from protein aggregation in the lens, leading to progressive clouding of vision. Understanding the pathophysiology and surgical options, such as phacoemulsification, will prepare you for managing this common geriatric condition.
Glaucoma
Known as the "silent thief of sight," glaucoma is characterized by optic nerve damage, of ten due to elevated intraocular pressure (IOP). It's a key condition to monitor in patients with a family history. Mastering the interpretation of visual fields and optic nerve imaging is vital for early diagnosis and management.
Macular degeneration
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) af fects central vision, significantly impacting daily activities. It's a leading cause of vision loss in the elderly. Delving into the distinctions between dry and wet AMD and staying updated on treatments like anti-VEGF injections will be crucial in your future practice.
Conjunctivitis (red eye)
Conjunctivitis, whether viral, bacterial, or allergic, is a common and highly contagious condition. Recognizing the differences in etiology is essential to providing appropriate treatment and preventing outbreaks, especially in clinical settings.

Meibomian glands
Meet the meibomian glands! Tucked neatly within your eyelids, these tiny but mighty glands play a crucial role in maintaining your eye health.
The meibomian glands are specialized sebaceous glands located along the rims of your eyelids. They produce meibum, an oily substance that prevents the evaporation of your eye's tear film. This oil layer is essential for keeping your eyes lubricated, ensuring that every blink is smooth and every stare is comfortable.
Healthy meibomian glands mean clear, comfortable vision. However, when these glands mal function or get blocked, it can lead to dry eye syndrome, discomfort, and blurry vision. This condition, known as meibomian gland dys function (MGD), is more common than you might think and can significantly af fect your daily life.

Atrophic patches
A 54-year-old woman came to follow-up with a diagnosed case of angle-closure glaucoma in both eyes, and on topical antiglaucoma medications for many years because of her history of multiple angle-closure attacks. Slit-lamp examination of the right eye revealed the presence of atrophic patches on the iris in the superior and inferior quadrants, accompanied by stromal separation, known as iridoschisis. Lowenstein and Foster coined the term iridoschisis (iris splitting) in 1945 to describe a deep, parallel split between the anterior and posterior stromal layers of the iris. The strands of the iris float in the aqueous humor to produce an appearance resembling "shredded wheat" in iridoschisis.
