It was a pleasure to host H.E. Dr. Riina Kionka, Ambassador of the European Union in Pakistan, who met Dr. S Akbar Zaidi, Executive Director, IBA, to discuss avenues of mutual interest.
During the meeting, Dr. Kionka commended the IBA for the provision of quality education for almost seven decades. Both sides expressed their commitment to strengthening cooperation between Pakistan and the European Union to facilitate higher education and research opportunities for the IBA students.
‘Zaban-i-Ghayr: Islam and the Work of the Humanities’ – An inaugural lecture by Asad Q. Ahmed, Magistretti Distinguished Professor of Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures, and Director of the Center for Middle Eastern Studies (CMES) at the UC Berkeley.
The lecture is a collaboration between and CMES-Berkeley in which Professor Ahmed will reflect on the work of the humanities in academia, and how certain indigenous discursive elements were subverted to serve modernity, creating a persistent conceptual contradiction in post-colonial cultures.

We start 2024 with a groundbreaking ceremony of The Jaffer Family of New York Data Science Center at the Main Campus!
It was a pleasure to welcome the Jaffer Family along with the board members of the Jaffer Family Foundation (JFF), United Global Initiative (UGI), and Know Welfare Foundation to break ground on the site for the new facility which brought together the senior leadership and faculty of .
Furthering the commitment of JFF and UGI in supporting quality education, an MoU signing ceremony was held with Justice (Retd.) Maqbool Baqar, Caretaker Chief Minister of Sindh and Patron IBA as the Chief Guest.
At the MoU signing, the JFF and IBA leadership included, Mohamed Taki Jaffer, Chairman, JFF; Dr. S Akbar Zaidi, Executive Director, IBA; Dr. Shakeel Khoja, Dean, School of Mathematics & Computer Science; and Malahat Awan, Director, Alumni Affairs, Resource Mobilization and Corporate Relations.
The event included notable business and civic leaders including Dr. Hasnain Walji, Executive Director, UGI; Mrs. Rana Hussain, Caretaker Minister, College Education Department; and Brigadier (Retd.) Haris Nawaz, Caretaker Home Minister of Sindh.
With a focus on fostering entrepreneurship and innovation, the Data Science Center will empower students and researchers to explore future-positive technologies, conduct ground-breaking research, and develop solutions to real-world problems.
This initiative aligns perfectly with IBA’s mission to be a world-class institution of higher education and will position it at the forefront of technological advancements in the region.

Dr. Lalarukh Ejaz, Director, IBA Center for Entrepreneurial Development was the chief guest at the closing ceremony.
The second edition of the Social Sciences Winter School wrapped up after five days of training, discussions, and plenary presentations on the theme of ‘Environmental Change, Societies at Risk and Social Vulnerabilities in South Asia’.
The participants and the trainers exchanged perspectives on common issues, debating climate change in the three workshops on campus, and in the various field trips. The participants visited the Dhabeji Pumping Station and Ibrahim Hyderi to discuss various issues related to air pollution and use of specific tools for measuring it; and how the fishermen are adapting to a changing climate.
The School, jointly organised by and Centre d'Etudes Sud-Asiatiques et Himalayennes - CESAH, was led by a local and international team of academics who are engaged in research and fieldwork activities around the world.

The School of Economics and Social Sciences (SESS) hosted Dr. Noah Salomon, Associate Professor, Religious Studies, University of Virginia, USA, and author of the award-winning book 'For Love of the Prophet: An Ethnography of Sudan's Islamic State' (2016).
The talk, organised by Dr. Sajjad Ahmad, Lecturer, Department of Social Sciences, SESS, was attended by students and faculty linked to Political Science, History, Economics, and Journalism.
Dr. Salomon’s talk on 'Partition's Religion: The Formation of a Muslim Minority in Sudan,' discussed how South Sudan came to be the newest internationally recognised country in the world, after it split from the Republic of Sudan in 2011.
The audience asked Dr. Salomon interesting questions on themes including Arab and non-Arab politics in Africa, the effect of wealth inequality on ethnic/religious strife and civil war, Western imperial influences in Africa, Islam, Christianity, tribal religions in Africa, secularism, and the value and function of the discipline of anthropology in the realm of Religious Studies.
A huge shout out to the IBA Men’s Basketball Team on securing the top position in the HEC Intervarsity Basketball Championship 2023-24 (Zone M), and on qualifying for the All-Pakistan intervarsity Basketball Championship!

‘ML Journey: Classroom vs Industry Realities’ – an insightful panel hosted by the IBA School of Mathematics & Computer Science (SMCS).
Led by Dr. Sajjad Haider, Professor, SMCS, the panel discussion revolved around the evolving landscape of ML, transcending the basic algorithmic understanding to emphasise significance of solving tangible problems and creating a positive change.
The experts stressed how success lies in not just understanding algorithms, but in practical problem solving and being innovative.

With an amazing lineup of speakers, the third ‘Tum Mein Aik Aur Cup Chai’ session's theme was “Nurturing Gen Z for Future Success and Growth”. This session was organised by IBA Alumni Affairs, Alumni Student Society, and Tapal.
Dr. S Akbar Zaidi, Executive Director, , welcomed the attendees, followed by a welcome note by Malahat Awan, Director, Alumni Affairs, Resource Mobilization and Corporate Relations, IBA.
The first panel discussion focused on changes in the business sector to suit Gen Z in the workplace, while younger professionals shared their adventures and experiences in the second panel.
The attendees were interested in the free-flowing conversation, which was evident in the engaging Q&A session.
‘Teaching Creativity Soft Skills to Boost Student Innovation’ – a transformative workshop organised by the Center for Innovation in Learning & Ed-Transformation (CILET) at the School of Business Studies. This is part of a series of workshops on teaching soft skills and is being supported by The University of Alabama under the Higher Education System Strengthening Activity (HESSA) project.
The workshop, which debunked myths about creativity, was led by Prof. Dr. Steven Burian, Director of Science at the Alabama Water Institute, The University of Alabama, and co-led by Dr. Mohammad Kamran Mumtaz, Director, CILET.
Dr. Burian highlighted the trainable nature of creativity, focusing on the art of connecting ideas, while Dr. Kamran engaged the participants with interactive tasks, instilling practical strategies for integrating creativity into teaching.
