Prime Minister of Mongolia L.Oyun-Erdene will pay official visit to China next week. He will take part in the 14th Annual Meeting of the New Champions in Tianjin at the invitation of PM of China Li Qiang.

Previously, L.Oyun-Erdene visited in China in February, 2022 and held official talks with Chinese government officials including President Xi Jinping.

In the past two years, China and Mongolia reported remarkable cooperation in combating the pandemic, particularly including the widely praised “gifting one another with sheep and tea”, which built up the friendship ties.

As of 5 June, Mongolia has welcomed 216668 foreign tourists. Most tourists came from China and Russia, two neighbours of Mongolia.

The Mongolian government has been taking measures to revive the pandemic-hit tourism sector. In January, it exempted citizens of 34 countries from visa requirements for up to 30 days until the end of 2025 for tourism purposes, bringing the total number of visa-free countries to 61.

The country has also classified 2023, 2024 and 2025 as “Years to Visit Mongolia” and is expected to organize more than 90 events in 2023 to promote tourism.

Mongolia sees tourism as the most viable way to diversify its economy. It has set a goal of welcoming at least 1 million foreign tourists and earning 1 billion U.S. dollars from tourism in the coming years.

The country received 290,400 foreign tourists in 2022, earning 350 million dollars from the tourism sector.

Senior diplomats of the United States, Mongolia and South Korea held their first trilateral meeting last week to discuss North Korea’s rapid development of nuclear and missile capabilities, the State Department said Friday.

At the meeting, held Tuesday in Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia, the diplomats agreed on the necessity of resuming dialogue with North Korea despite its unprecedented number of ballistic missile launches since the start of 2022.

Mark Lambert, deputy assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific affairs, and his Mongolian and South Korean counterparts, G.Byambasuren and Choi Yong Jun, voiced willingness to hold a three-way meeting regularly on a rotating basis in each of the countries, it said. Mongolia has diplomatic ties with North Korea.

During the inaugural meeting, the three also expressed “deep concern” over the risk of nuclear weapons use in Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine and discussed a range of other major global and regional issues, including their efforts to maintain a free and open Indo-Pacific, the department said.

The United States, Japan and Mongolia launched similar trilateral talks in 2015.

According to the U.S. department, a conference on Northeast Asian security, which Mongolia started hosting in 2014, will be held for two days from June 15 in its capital.

The conference, known as the Ulaanbaatar Dialogue, has provided rare opportunities for countries such as Japan, which has never had diplomatic ties with North Korea, to interact with officials from Pyongyang.

Mongolia fully opens its borders to international travel

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/. Today on February 14, Prime Minister L.Oyun-Erdene announced that the Cabinet approved a resolution on lifting the heightened state of readiness and downgrading the level of restrictions from ‘Orange’ to ‘Yellow’. With the updates that were made to COVID-19 temporary regulations in January this year, no restrictions will be imposed on business operations.

Currently, 92 percent of the country’s total adult population have become fully vaccinated, while 52 percent of target group citizens have been administered with their third shot of COVID-19 vaccines. 90 thousand citizens have also been involved in their fourth shot so far. Thus, based on the risk assessment that was carried out on infection and protection, the Cabinet made the decision to ease pandemic restrictions, noted the Prime Minister during the press conference.

He then specifically noted that with this decision, Mongolia fully opens its borders to international travel. In other words, aside from the advisory being issued for wearing face masks, practicing social distancing, hand sanitizing, and being actively involved in COVID-19 vaccinations, all prior restrictions imposed in connection with the pandemic situation are being lifted.

Mentioning that it is possible to become vaccinated in Mongolia as the country has now become open to all tourists and investors who are fully vaccinated, “The government, administrative bodies, private entities, and tourism companies of Mongolia will put efforts into creating the necessary conditions to ensure safety and provide smooth services for all those arriving in the country for business and tourism purposes,” he said.

Prime Minister L.Oyun-Erdene continued on to say, “Since November 12, 2020, Mongolia has imposed strict lockdown measures a total of 7 times, spending 79 days under the ‘Red’ level of restrictions. For the rest of the period, the ‘Orange’ level or the heightened state of readiness was implemented. As a result, the country’s exports halted, the transportation of freight slowed down, schools became unable to organize in-person classes, businesses closed down, and over 200 thousand job opportunities were put in risk. For the very first time since 1992, Mongolia’s economic growth reached -5.3 percent. The general budget revenue also decreased by 23 percent.”

Highlighting that the pandemic continues to pose challenges, he then expressed his confidence in all citizens and entities to protect themselves and others from COVID-19 by taking the appropriate measures such as being involved in vaccinations and wearing face masks.

In the framework of the ‘New Revival Policy’, the Prime Minister underlined that the government will continue to stand firm in its stance on making up for pandemic losses and increasing investment through economic recovery.
