GCU Welcomes New Intermediate Students
Government College University (GCU) Lahore held an orientation session to welcome its new intermediate students. The event featured addresses by key university officials, including Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Shazia Bashir, who introduced students to GCU’s rich heritage and academic excellence. She encouraged them to actively participate in both academic and extracurricular activities, emphasizing the unique opportunities GCU offers for personal and professional growth.
An MoU was signed between Cholistan University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (CUVAS) Bahawalpur and Government College University (GCU) Lahore. The agreement was signed by the Vice Chancellor of CUVAS, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Mazhar Ayaz, and the Vice Chancellor of GCU Lahore, Prof. Dr. Shazia Bashir. The purpose of the MoU is to collaborate in education and research to address national and global challenges related to climate change, and to improve the welfare of livestock and animals, ultimately benefiting humanity. The MoU will facilitate research exchange and lab work opportunities for the faculty and students of both universities, promoting mutual academic growth.

GC University Lahore Grieves the Loss of distinguished Plasma Physicist Prof. Dr. Zaka Ullah
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Prof. Dr. Zaka Ullah in Islamabad. Prof. Dr. Zaka Ullah was a distinguished Plasma Physicist in Pakistan, who served as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Physics at Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad. His contributions to the field of Physics, particularly in Plasma Physics, have been widely recognized and appreciated by the academic community.
Prof. Dr. Zaka Ullah also made significant contributions to the Centre for Advanced Studies in Physics (CASP) at GC University Lahore, where he held the prestigious Rafi M. Chaudhri Chair from 7th August 2017 to 6th August 2021. His commitment to advancing scientific research and education was evident in his work and his influence will continue to be felt for years to come.
Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Shazia Bashir, faculty, and staff of GC University Lahore expressed their deepest condolences on the passing of Prof. Dr. Zaka Ullah. His outstanding contributions to the field of Physics, particularly during his tenure at GC University Lahore, have left an indelible mark on our institution.
"Prof. Dr. Zaka Ullah was not just an eminent scholar; he was a mentor and guide to many. His loss is a profound one for the academic community, and his legacy will continue to inspire us all," said the Vice Chancellor.

وائس چانسلر پروفیسر ڈاکٹر شازیہ بشیر کا ڈاکٹر رتھ فاؤ نیو گرلز ہاسٹل کا دورہ
لاہور: جی سی یونیورسٹی کی وائس چانسلر پروفیسر ڈاکٹر شازیہ بشیر نے ڈاکٹر رتھ فاؤ نیو گرلز ہاسٹل کا دورہ کیا اور تعمیری کاموں کا جائزہ لیا۔ دورے کے دوران، ڈاکٹر شازیہ بشیر نے متعلقہ افسران کو ہدایت کی کہ ہاسٹل کے تعمیراتی کام کو 2 ستمبر سے پہلے مکمل کیا جائے اور کام کے معیار پر کوئی سمجھوتہ نہ کیا جائے۔
وائس چانسلر کا کہنا تھا کہ ہاسٹل کی تعمیر مکمل ہونے کے بعد 500 سے زائد طالبات کو رہائش فراہم کی جائے گی، جو ہاسٹل کی دستیابی کی منتظر ہیں۔ انتظامیہ کا کہنا ہے کہ ہاسٹل کی تعمیر مقررہ وقت کے اندر اور معیاری انداز میں مکمل کرنے کے لیے تمام ضروری اقدامات کیے جا رہے ہیں۔
PhD Defense: Muhammad Rizwan Sami's Research on Attosecond Pulses
Muhammad Rizwan Sami on Tuesday defended his PhD thesis on the "Effect of Atomic Nucleus on Generation of Attosecond Pulses" at the Institute of Physics, Government College University Lahore. His research was supervised by Dr. Atif Shahbaz.
Vice Chancellor of GCU, Professor Dr. Shazia Bashir, attended PhD defense and praised the research for its potential impact on the field of quantum physics. She highlighted that the findings could advance the understanding of ultrafast processes and open new avenues for research and technological innovation.
In his defense, Sami expressed gratitude to his supervisor, Dr. Atif Shahbaz, for his guidance and support, as well as to Vice Chancellor Dr. Shazia Bashir for her encouragement. He also acknowledged the collaborative efforts of his colleagues. The research received support from the National Centre for Physics (NCP) in Islamabad.

🌍 Eco-Friendly Future: A Step Towards Sustainability at GCU Lahore! 🌱
The Disaster Risk Management Society at Government College University Lahore hosted an awareness session on Plastic Pollution & Waste Management. Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Shazia Bashir addressed the students on crucial environmental issues, emphasizing the importance of reducing plastic waste and adopting sustainable practices.
Participants were informed about the harmful effects of plastic pollution and the best practices for effective waste management.
In addition to the informative session, eco-friendly items like cloth bags, bamboo brushes, and reusable flask bottles were distributed to the first 50 students who attended, promoting the adoption of green habits in daily life.

Emient writer Ashfaq Ahmed: Celebrating the Literary Legend and GCU Alumnus in the Month of His Birth Anniversary
اشفاق احمد (22 اگست 1925 – 7 ستمبر 2004) ایک معروف پاکستانی دانشور، مصنف، ڈرامہ نگار، اور براڈکاسٹر تھے۔ انہوں نے 1950 میں گورنمنٹ کالج لاہور سے اردو ادب میں ماسٹرز کی ڈگری حاصل کی۔ ان کی اہلیہ، بانو قدسیہ، جو خود بھی اردو ادب کی ممتاز شخصیت تھیں، ان کی زندگی اور ادبی سفر میں ان کی ساتھی رہیں۔
اشفاق احمد نے اردو ادب میں 30 سے زائد کتابیں تحریر کیں، جن میں ناول، افسانے، اور ریڈیو و ٹیلی ویژن کے لیے ڈرامے شامل ہیں۔ ان کی تحریروں نے انہیں عالمی شہرت دلائی۔ دورانِ ملازمت وہ کئی اہم عہدوں پر فائز رہے۔ اردو سائنس بورڈ کے صدر نشین کے طور پر برس ہا برس گراں قدر خدمات انجام دیں۔ ان کا ریڈیو پروگرام ''تلقین شاہ'' انکے لیے عالمی شہرت کا موجب بنا۔
ادب اورفنون لطیفہ کے میدان میں ان کی خدمات کے اعتراف میں انہیں 1979 میں ''ستارہئ امتیاز'' سے نوازا گیا۔
اشفاق احمد گورنمنٹ کالج لاہور کے ایسے جلیل القدر سپوت ہیں کہ اگر زمانہ طالب علمی میں انہیں راوین کی شناخت میسر آئی تو آج ان کی شخصیت اس عظیم ادارے کے لیے باعثِ تکریم ہے۔ ان کی معروف ادبی تصانیف میں ''گڈریا'' اور ڈرامے ''ایک محبت سو افسانے'' اور ''تلقین شاہ'' شامل ہیں، جو آج بھی لوگوں کے دلوں میں زندہ و پائندہ ہیں۔
گورنمنٹ کالج یونیورسٹی لاہور کی تہذیبی شناخت اشفاق احمد سے متشکل ہوتی ہے۔ آج ان کی ولادت کو ننانوے برس مکمل ہوئے۔ اس موقع پر وائس چانسلر گورنمنٹ کالج یونیورسٹی لاہور، پروفیسر ڈاکٹر شازیہ بشیر نے انہیں بھرپور خراجِ تحسین پیش کیا اورنژادِ نو کو تلقین کی کہ اگر وہ اس عظیم درسگاہ سے محبت کا تعلق استوار کرنا چاہتے ہیں تو انہیں مجلہ راوی مطبوعہ 1989ء میں اشفاق صاحب کے مضمون ”چاند کا سفر“ ضرور پڑھیں۔ انہوں نے مزید کہا کہ ادب، تصوف اور لوک دانش کے میدانوں میں اشفاق احمد مرحوم کے نقشِ پا دائمی طور پر ثبت ہیں۔ شخصیت سازی کے لیے اس سے بہتر جادہ کوئی اور نہیں۔ آپ نے پہلی ڈرامہ کو ادبی وقار بخشا اور اسے بیسویں صدی کے عالمی ڈرامہ نگاروں کی تصانیف کا ہم پلہ بنا دیا۔

Ahmad Iqbal, who holds a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of Pennsylvania, USA, assured his full support for enhancing the university's academic standards and overall development.

GCU Student Wins Two Gold, One Silver at the Asian Indoor Rowing Championship, Malaysia
Mr. Abdul Rehman Awan (GCU Intermediate Studies from Session 2020-2022) performed exceptionally well while representing Pakistan at the Asian Indoor Rowing Championship held in Penang, Malaysia. Abdul Rehman won two gold and one silver medals in the lightweight category.
He began pursuing rowing during his time at Government College University Lahore, with the support of the coaches from the University’s Sports Department.
Vice Chancellor of GCU, Prof. Dr. Shazia Bashir, along with the faculty, extended her heartfelt congratulations to Abdul Rehman Awan for his outstanding achievements.
We wish and pray that Mr. Abdul Rehman Awan continues to win accolades for his country and inspires the coming generations of sportspersons, especially Inter-Ravians. Congratulations!
