VC prioritizes innovation and public benefit in new research approval criteria
Lahore, July 05: The University of Health Sciences (UHS), Vice Chancellor, Professor Ahsan Waheed Rathore, announced a pivotal shift in the institution's approach to research. All research topics proposed by undergraduate students and postgraduate trainees will now require approval from the Office of Research Innovation and Commercialization (ORIC), emphasizing innovation, commercial viability, and public benefit as key criteria.
Addressing the PhD and MPhil Committee, which includes heads of all teaching departments, on Friday, Professor Rathore highlighted the university's commitment to fostering applied research. "Our aim is to ensure that the research undertaken at UHS is not only groundbreaking but also has practical applications that can benefit society at large," he stated.
He detailed the new approval process, wherein students enrolled in MD, MS, MDS, MPhil, and PhD programs must submit their proposed research topics, along with a brief introduction, to the UHS Office of Research Innovation and Commercialization (ORIC) through the university's Research and Development (R&D) Department. The ORIC will review these proposals and make recommendations, upon which the research topics will be approved, and supervisors will be assigned.
Professor Rathore emphasized that this new process aims to align academic research with real-world needs, thereby enhancing the impact of the university's scholarly work. "By focusing on innovative and commercially viable research, we can contribute to the advancement of science and technology while also addressing pressing societal issues," he remarked.
The committee approved the criteria and procedure for the 2024-25 admissions into on-campus postgraduate programs, including MPhil, PhD in basic medical and dental sciences, and a Master in Nursing. It was decided that the admissions will be opened on July 15 whereas entrance test for these programs will be held on August 18.
In addition to streamlining the research approval process, the Vice Chancellor announced the introduction of a Best Research Paper Award, which will be given annually. This award aims to recognize and incentivize high-quality research that demonstrates significant innovation and potential for commercial application and public benefit.
UHS VC added that the main objective was to enhance the quality and relevance of research conducted, reinforcing the university's role as a leader in health sciences education and research.
