Trainers are facilitators, not star performers. If the trainer focuses on meeting his or her own needs, then the trainer is playing the star.
A good trainer focuses on the participants' needs. Are the participants comfortable? Are they learning? Are they actively involved? What can be done to improve the learning environment?
Trainers should foster independence, not dependence. There is no point in making participants dependent on a trainer unless a trainer expects to always be there—a virtual impossibility.
In team training, a trainer must share center stage with participants and fundamentally believe there is a wealth of knowledge present in each person in the room.
Not everyone can be an effective trainer. Certain characteristics are critically important in trainers.
Qualities of Effective Trainers.
1) Willingness to train.
2) Willingness to practice, prepare, and work hard at doing a good job.
3) A patient and friendly demeanor.
4) Good communication skills, including dear speech, confi-dent presence, and approachable manner.
5) Ability to use humor wisely and well.
6) Ability to earn respect.
7) Ability to engage others in the process.
8) Flexibility and open-mindedness.
