The University of Peshawar decided to merge Public and Business Administration in order to have greater synergy Thus, the Institute of Management Studies was established.
We are excited to announce that Dr. Zia Obaid, is appointed as a Director of Institute of Management Studies (IMS).
He is an Associate Professor, at the Institute of Management Studies, University of Peshawar and has been associated as a faculty member with the university for the last twenty years.
Dr. Obaid has served the institute as an interim Director from August 2014 to December 2016. As the Director, he initiated and implemented processes along with the staff and faculty members that improved the academic, administrative and financial management of the institute. He initiated partnerships with development sector organizations and involved the students in research projects to expose them to the rigors and work ethics of international development regimes. Dr. Obaid has been the Director ORIC of University of Peshawar from February 2018 to April 2019. Being the Director ORIC, he linked the University with IPO Pakistan and various leading incubation centers of the country.
Dr. Zia Obaid is a Fulbright Scholar and has earned a PhD in Public Administration and Public Policy from Florida State University, USA, and has an MPhil in Public Administration and Organization Theory from University of Bergen, Norway. He is alumnus of the IMS from where he earned his Master’s in Public Administration.
As a researcher, Dr. Obaid has widely published his research work in national and international journals on topics related to public management, development administration, policy evaluation and implementation, social capital and organization theory. He has supervised and produced PhD and M.Phil scholars. His area of interest is development administration and policy implementation. He has worked in various capacity building initiatives and was involved in programs designed to mitigate risk in vulnerable societies. His area of interest includes evaluation of foreign aid interventions and their impact on civil society with a focus on building soft skills of the populace through training and education.
Dr. Obaid, has significantly contributed in the development sector and has been involved as Project Director and Convener on various training projects partnered with UNDP, Swiss Aid, Disaster Management Authorities in Pakistan and the US. He also delivered training in capacity building initiatives related to social mobilization and development sector management.
Dr. Obaid has also worked as Project Convener on monitoring, assessment, and evaluation of projects on behalf of UNDP, WFP and GIZ. As project convenor he has been responsible for overall administrative and financial control and implementation of the project. His responsibilities included project conceptualization and operationalization; human resource selection and management; financial management and external coordination.
Dr. Obaid has been trained in developing and evaluating tools that can be employed in Monitoring and Evaluation of development sector initiatives across geographic, demographic and gender sensitive assessments.
As a Director his vision is to create a positive and nurturing academic and work environment that encourages creativity, fosters personal growth, and promotes institutional growth.
We are excited to announce that Professor Dr. Sajjad Ahmad Khan, is appointed as a Dean of Faculty of Management & Information Sciences (FMIS).
Prof. Dr. Sajjad Ahmad Khan, has long administrative experience and has served on various positions. He led the IMS as a Director for more than six years. As a leader, he has always motivated, guided and inspired his team and students. During his leadership, along with his team IMS has strengthened academically and become one of the largest institutes of the university. His other administrative positions include Director QEC, Director Finance, and Program Coordinator. He is serving the institute as a faculty member for the last thirty years. He is member of board of studies and research boards of many other universities of KPK.
As a researcher he has presented his research work in national and international conferences and has widely published in both national and international journals. He has supervised and produced number of PhDs and M.Phil scholars.
Dr. Sajjad has actively worked as project coordinator and researcher in various development sector research projects that include: Supply Chain and Logistic Management of Health commodities, Capacity Building initiative for the Youth of FATA 2016: FATA Recovery Project, Introducing Entrepreneurship education in Pakistan: an interdisciplinary perspective on value creation” under HEC-British Council UK Knowledge Economy Partnership Program, Training Impact Assessment & Mgt. Information System Development DASP (Dir Area Support Program) and many others.
Dr. Sajjad is an alumnus of the IMS, completed his PhD and MBA both from the same institute and did his Post Doc from Center for Entrepreneurship Research, Essex Business School, University of Essex U.K. His area of interest is entrepreneurship, human resource management, policy analysis, organization theory and behavior.
As a Dean, his vision is to foster a rigorous culture of creative and scholarly investigation, within a collaborative and inclusive environment.

Democratic Art Mela: Expressing democracy through art, technology, and civic engagement”.
An event organized by Code for Pakistan, in collaboration with Institute of Management Studies, University of Peshawar was held on Thursday, January 25, 2024, at the Business Incubation Center of the University of Peshawar.
This event, focused on the integration of art, technology, and civic engagement in the context of the upcoming general elections. Its primary goal was to highlight the importance of informed democratic processes.
The Art Mela with a theme of Intekhabi Mela garnered considerable attention. It brought together students and professionals to create impactful artworks and posters that reflect their perspectives on democracy and the elections. Students from various disciplines, including College of Home Economics, Art & Design, Computer Science, Political Science, Journalism, Business Studies, Peace and Conflict Studies, and Criminology, participated in the event.
Dr. Aamer Raza of Political Science, and Dr. Mehnaz Gul, from Institute of Management Studies, delivered insightful talks on the significance of election participation and voter rights education.
Shaji Ahmed, CEO of Code for Pakistan, stated, "At Code for Pakistan, we focus on fostering partnerships with civil society and governments to develop platforms where citizens can voice their opinions and contribute to shaping a better future”.
The event showcased the potential of art and technology as tools for enhancing democratic processes. The artworks created during the Mela will soon be featured on Code for Pakistan's website.

Research Poster & Competition Certificate and Award Ceremony: In the end the efforts of all the students participated in the Research Poster Exhibition & Competition were appreciated with certificates.
The first three positions received the cash prizes, shields and certificates, the five consolation positions received, cash prizes and certificates, and all the students were awarded the certificates. The cash prizes were sponsored by Memaar Developments and their Managing Director, Mr. Sayyed Ahsan Ali distributed the winning prizes.
On this occasion Prof. Dr. Johar Ali distributed the certificates among all the participants, Respected Director IMS dr. In the Research Poster Exhibition & Competition under the banner of 'Research it Up' Students of BBA 5th semester showcased their Research projects. Total 36 research posters were displayed and presented by the two hundred students of BBA 5th semester, who conducted their research studies in groups, as a requirement of the Research Methods Course., under the supervision of Dr. Mehnaz Gul and with the support and help of IMS esteemed faculty.
Dr. Naila Nazir, chairperson Economics Department, and Dr. Mehboob ur Rashid, Assistant Professor IMS, evaluated all the research posters, declared, and announced the first three positions and five consolation prizes.
‘Research it Up’ an initiative of Institute of Management Studies, University of Peshawar, led by Dr. Mehnaz Gul, Associate Professor\R&D Coordinator, to promote research environment by providing a platform to students for showcasing diverse research ideas.
Its first flagship event ‘Research Poster Exhibition & Competition’ was organized on December 21, 2023, under the banner of ‘Research it Up’ in the Business Incubation Center. Total 36 research posters were displayed and presented by the two hundred students of BBA 5th semester, who conducted their research studies in groups, as a requirement of the Research Methods Course.
The worthy Vice Chancellor, Prof Dr. Muhammad Saleem and Prof. Dr. Johar Ali, Dean Social Sciences and FMIS, graced the event with their presence. Dr. Zia Obaid, Associate Professor IMS, showed them around and accompanied them in visiting all the research posters. Students presented their research posters, and their hard work was appreciated by the Vice Chancellor and all the esteemed guests.

Evening session of Career Counselling and orientation for IMS graduates, New Comers and Merged District students was organised on May 25.
Dr Shahid Ali ( Professor Institute of Management Sciences), Mr Ali Kazmi (FES Career Counsellor), Dr. Mehboob (Assistant Professor IMS) delivered talks about career counselling, scholarships and semester policies and rules.
Directorate of Youth Affairs KP supported the event.
