Calorie restriction slows pace of aging in healthy adults 13/02/2023

A controlled trial of an international team of researchers led by the Butler Columbia Aging Center at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health shows that caloric restriction can slow the pace of aging in healthy adults. The CALERIE™ intervention slowed the pace of aging measured from participants’ blood DNA methylation using the algorithm DunedinPACE (Pace of Aging, Computed from the Epigenome). The intervention effect on DunedinPACE represented a 2-3 percent slowing in the pace of aging, which in other studies translates to a 10-15 percent reduction in mortality risk, an effect similar to a smoking cessation intervention.

New pathway for molecular cancer drug therapies: Bitopic inhibitors may lay foundation for new approach to disease treatment 02/01/2023

A fundamental challenge in drug development is the balance between optimizing a drug's lock-and-key fit with its target and the drug's ability to make its way across the cellular membrane and access that target. The search for cell-permeable drugs has conventionally focused on low-molecular weight molecules with rigid, nonpolar chemical structures. However, emerging therapeutic strategies break traditional drug design rules by employing larger, flexibly linked chemical entities.

New pathway for molecular cancer drug therapies: Bitopic inhibitors may lay foundation for new approach to disease treatment Researchers reveal the discovery of a cellular uptake pathway important for larger molecules. These large and complex molecules bind in unconventional ways to their targets, are efficiently taken up by target cells, and can be harnessed to create new drugs for the treatment of cancer and other disea...

New bacterial therapy approach to treat lung cancer: Columbia biomedical engineers develop therapeutic strategy to combine bacterial therapies with pharmaceutical drugs 28/12/2022

Lung cancer is the deadliest cancer in the United States and around the world. Many of the currently available therapies have been ineffective, leaving patients with very few options. A promising new strategy to treat cancer has been bacterial therapy, but while this treatment modality has quickly progressed from laboratory experiments to clinical trials in the last five years, the most effective treatment for certain types of cancers may be in combination with other drugs.

New bacterial therapy approach to treat lung cancer: Columbia biomedical engineers develop therapeutic strategy to combine bacterial therapies with pharmaceutical drugs Researchers report that they have developed a new experimental pipeline to combine bacterial therapy with current cancer drugs. Their study, which explores resistance to bacterial therapy at the molecular level, has achieved better treatment efficacy without additional toxicity in laboratory models.

Antibody discovery paves way for new therapies against group A streptococcal infections 19/12/2022

Researchers have discovered an antibody with the potential to protect against Strep A infection, as well as a rare form of antibody binding, that leads to an effective immune response against bacteria. The discovery could explain why so many Group A strep vaccines have failed.
One strategy that the scientific community uses to find new ways of fighting bacterial infections is to create target-seeking antibodies. First, the antibodies that the body's immune system produces in the event of infection are mapped, and then their effect on the immune system is studied. In this way, antibodies can be identified that can be used both for preventive treatment and for treatment during an ongoing infection.

Scientists modify yeast cell and turn it into a cannabis tracker 12/12/2022

Researchers at the University of Copenhagen's Faculty of Science have modified a yeast cell to sense the active substances in cannabis and get it to turn red when it does. The researchers substituted the yeast cell's with a sense of taste and smell that allows them to detect cannabinoids, the active substances in cannabis. Going one step further, the researchers made the yeast turn red or glow when it successfully detects cannabinoids.

Gene that guides earliest social behaviors could be key to understanding autism 28/11/2022

Little is known about how social behavior develops in the earliest stages of life. But most animals including humans are born with an innate ability to interact socially or form bonds with others. And that contributes to success throughout life.

Now, a new animal study points to a gene that is important for the earliest development of basic social behaviors. The work also suggests that exposure to certain drugs and environmental risk factors during embryonic development can cause changes to this gene, leading to alterations in social behavior that are similar to those found in individuals who have autism. Much to their surprise, the researchers also found they could reverse some of the effects using an experimental drug.

Scientists genetically engineer plants to yield more vegetable oil 14/11/2022

Scientists have successfully bioengineered an important protein in plants to increase the yield of oil from their fruits and seeds -- a holy grail for the global agri-food industry. Their patent-pending method can increase oil content in seeds by 15 to 18 percent, which is a significant improvement since major oil-producing crops such as soybean, sunflower, rapeseed, and peanut, already have a high percentage of oil in their seeds. This innovation can help the world in its quest for sustainability, helping to reduce the amount of arable land needed for oil-yielding crops while increasing the yield to meet the world's growing demand for vegetable oil.

The unreasonable use of antibiotics has pushed bacteria to develop resistance mechanisms to this type of treatment. This phenomenon, known as antibiotic resistance, is now considered by the WHO as one of the greatest threats to health. The lack of treatment against multi-resistant bacteria could bring us back to a time when millions of people died of pneumonia or salmonella.

Metabolite product from pomegranate: Researchers identify way to boost tumor-fighting immune cells: Preclinical models and cell culture experiments show 'rejuvenation' of T cells by urolithin A -- clinical trials planned 31/10/2022

Researchers have succeeded in identifying a new approach for the therapy of colorectal cancer. In preclinical models and studies on human immune cells, they found that urolithin A, a metabolite product from pomegranate, sustainably improves the function of immune cells in their fight against cancer. After treatment with urolithin A, tumour-fighting immune cells become T memory stem cells which, due to their ability to divide, constantly supply the immune system with rejuvenated, non-exhausted T cells.

A potential target for developing broad-spectrum antiviral therapies: Study finds inhibiting enzyme boosts the innate immune response 17/10/2022

Experiments in cell cultures and mice showed that blocking the function of a specific enzyme present in all cells triggers a powerful innate immune response, the body's first line of defense against any foreign invader. When challenged by several types of viruses in the study, this response dramatically lowered the replication of viral particles and protected mouse lungs from damage.

A potential target for developing broad-spectrum antiviral therapies: Study finds inhibiting enzyme boosts the innate immune response Researchers have identified a promising strategy for development of broad-spectrum antiviral therapies that centers around promoting a strong immune response capable of stopping a number of viruses in their infectious tracks.

Newly discovered protein could be used to produce life-saving antifungals 05/10/2022

Yeast cells and human immune system cells rely on surprisingly similar chemical reactions to know when to grow. University of Arizona scientists have identified subtle differences between the two cell types that could help spur the development of antifungal drugs that are able to attack disease-causing yeasts in the body while sparing the immune system.

Newly discovered protein could be used to produce life-saving antifungals Researchers have discovered a protein that is responsible for controlling cell growth in yeasts. Since humans and yeasts have remarkably similar cellular mechanisms, teasing out the differences presents drug developers with new targets for treatments.
