If you're interested in learning about the history of archaeology, there's an article available that discusses the scientific and museological activities of archaeologists from Lviv during World War I. The article focuses on the experiences of archaeologists who were forced to serve in the army, the state of scientific institutions in Lviv, and the living and working conditions of professors, teaching staff, and museum workers from the city's University of Lviv.

"Austro-Prussian War of 1866, landscape archaeology of the battlefield of Sadowa-Königgrätz"

"The article attempts to present current results of landscape archaeology concerning a military conflict between Prussia and Austria in the summer of 1866 near Hradec Králové (Sadowa/Königgrätz). The aim is to introduce the possibilities of analysing individual available sources using the methods of battlefield archaeology, which is a sub-discipline of post-medieval archaeology" (from the abstract).

The new volume of the Archaeologia Polona is related to the conflict archaeology in the 20th century (and a little bit in the 19th century as well). "There are several reasons for the increased interest in this phenomenon. It seems to us that one of the most important is – or should be – providing objective information in cases where written sources are missing, incomplete, censored, intentionally falsified or destroyed. Contrary to appearances, such situations are relatively numerous. An additional important aspect of the discussed activity has a cultural or social dimension; this concerns the use of such research in the creation of an emotional attitude to a specific area by obtaining data allowing one to recognize a fragment of space as a place of memory, with all the consequences resulting from this designation. Equally important is the recovery and dignified burial of human remains related to violent events of the period, including efforts to identify the victims of conflict and commemorate them. It is also essential to obtain finds during archaeological work that can be used as museum objects as part of giving the results of scientific research an educational role" (From the Editorial).

Zmarł Profesor dr hab. Jan Machnik
Z wielkim żalem przyjęliśmy wiadomość, że w sobotę, 7 października, zmarł Profesor Jan Machnik, wybitny uczony, znawca neolitu i epoki brązu, nauczyciel i mistrz wielu pokoleń archeologów. Od początku swojej zawodowej kariery związany był z Polską Akademią Nauk, w której przez wiele lat kierował Zakładem Archeologii Polski Instytutu Historii Kultury Materialnej. Od 1992 roku był członkiem Polskiej Akademii Umiejętności, a w latach 2000-2006 jej wiceprezesem. Wykładał w Uniwersytecie Jagiellońskim i Uniwersytecie Rzeszowskim. Prowadził liczne badania wykopaliskowe, między innymi kierował pracami polsko-ukraińskich i polsko-słowackich ekspedycji naukowych. Był wielkim przyjacielem Muzeum Archeologicznego w Krakowie. Dzięki jego staraniom uregulowano prawnie przekazanie Muzeum dawnych zbiorów archeologicznych PAU. Był także członkiem Rady Muzeum. Odeszła wielka postać polskiej archeologii. Cześć Jego pamięci!

In the second half of the fifth millennium BC, a new model of supply and processing of siliceous rocks appeared in western Lesser Poland (Małopolska). The existing methods of production of blades and flakes from small cores obtained at a short distance from the settlement were supplemented by those enabling the production of much longer blades from cores made from raw material obtained by mining.

Non-invasive research has been undertaken in the southern arm of the archaeological area of the Krzemionki exploitation field, which is one of the least excavated of its regions. Geophysical prospection covered an area of 3.5 ha, and in addition, an area of more than 5 ha was examined by surface collection. The image of the underground structures was obtained thanks to a comprehensive comparison of the results of magnetic, earth resistance and GPR measurements, as well as the distribution of archaeological finds on the ground surface.

Archeolog, badaczka starszej i środkowej epoki kamienia, autorytet w dziedzinie najstarszej prahistorii Polski, krajów nadbałtyckich, Białorusi, Ukrainy i Rosji; pracownik IAE PAN w latach 1986-2014, od roku 1990 Kierownik Zakładu Epoki Kamienia (od 2012 r. Ośrodka Interdyscyplinarnych Badan Archeologicznych). Autorka ponad 100 prac naukowych, dydaktyk i wykładowca uczelni w kraju i zagranicą, promotorka prac doktorskich, uznana popularyzatorka badań archeologicznych, rzeczoznawca Ministra Kultury i Dziedzictwa Narodowego. Człowiek o ujmującym poczuciu humoru i uroku osobistym, pełen wychowawczej troski o współpracowników, życzliwy i przyjazny.

The year 2022 brought the 100th anniversary of the discovery of the Krzemionki mines. Due to the uniqueness of this place – as one of the best preserved prehistoric mining sites in the world and the only Polish archaeological monument listed as a World Heritage Site – the celebration of the jubilee became a festival of the Polish archaeological community and of all committed to this site.
