A study from 2021 found that selenoproteins play a key role in controlling and removing misfolded proteins, which accumulate as we get older. Such misfolded proteins are a common characteristic of aging and age-related diseases.

Holistic Optometry What Is It?
Holistic optometry, also known as integrative optometry, is an approach to eye care that considers the whole person and focuses on the interconnectedness of the eyes, vision, and overall health and well-being. It goes beyond traditional optometry practices that primarily focus on vision correction and eye diseases.

Practitioners of holistic optometry take into account various factors that can influence eye health, including nutrition, lifestyle, stress levels, environmental factors, and emotional well-being. They aim to address the underlying causes of vision problems and promote optimal eye health by considering the individual as a whole.

Some of the key principles and practices commonly associated with holistic optometry include:

Functional Vision Assessment: Holistic optometrists conduct comprehensive eye exams that go beyond assessing visual acuity. They evaluate visual skills, eye teaming, focusing abilities, and how the eyes coordinate with other sensory systems.

Nutritional and Lifestyle Recommendations: Holistic optometrists consider the role of nutrition and lifestyle choices in maintaining good eye health. They may offer recommendations for a balanced diet, nutritional supplements, exercise, stress management techniques, and healthy visual habits.

Vision Therapy: Vision therapy is a common treatment approach in holistic optometry. It involves a personalized program of visual exercises and activities designed to improve visual skills, enhance eye-brain coordination, and address specific vision problems.

Environmental Considerations: Holistic optometrists take into account environmental factors that can impact eye health, such as lighting conditions, computer or screen usage, and ergonomics. They may provide guidance on optimizing visual environments to reduce eye strain and fatigue.

Collaborative Care: Holistic optometrists often work in collaboration with other healthcare professionals, such as nutritionists, chiropractors, and psychologists, to provide a comprehensive approach to patient care.

It's important to note that while holistic optometry incorporates additional considerations beyond traditional optometry, it still emphasizes the importance of standard eye care practices, including diagnosing and treating eye diseases, prescribing corrective lenses, and monitoring overall eye health.

If you're interested in pursuing holistic optometry consultation book an appointment at 787-766-1872. Dr. Sangiovanni is a qualified optometrist who specializes in this approach and has the necessary training and experience in both traditional optometry and holistic practices.

Nutraceuticals: Regulations Do Exists

It is important to realize that a when a Health Professional recommends nutrition and dietary supplements after an evaluation it is because clinically is to be a safe and effective tool in the prevention and treatment of chronic eye disease. I often hear is that supplements are not “regulated,” meaning that just anyone can produce a product and sell it on the open market without scientific backing. Nothing could be further from the truth, dietary supplement manufacturers have a variety of other requirements to help assure product safety. Consider that dietary supplement manufacturers must comply with a host of federal and state regulations involving ingredient safety, manufacturing, quality control, labeling, advertisingi, bioterrorism and postmarketing surveillance. In 1994, the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) was enacted by Congress. This law defines dietary supplements as vitamins, minerals, botanicals, sports nutrition, weight management and specialty supplements that would be regulated not as drugs, but as foods. DSHEA also provided the US Food and Drug Administration with more, not less, authority over supplements than it had previously. DSHEA defines the following mandates:
The FDA has the authority to remove adulterated or unsafe products from the market.
If a product contains an ingredient not listed on the label (or an inaccurate amount of an ingredient), the product is considered adulterated, and the FDA can impose sanctions on the company, ranging from imposing fines to removing the product from the marketplace to criminal prosecution of the manufacturer.
By law, dietary supplement manufacturers must adhere to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) specific to dietary supplements that go beyond conventional food GMPs. These cover virtually every aspect of supplement manufacturing, labeling and quality control. If products are not made according to the GMPs the FDA can deem them adulterated or misbranded.
The FDA must be notified before supplement manufacturers introduce a new ingredient to the marketplace and they must have evidence of safety in support of the new ingredient.
Advertising and labeling for dietary supplements must be truthful and not misleading to consumers. FDA, Federal Trade Commission, and state agencies and attorneys general all have enforcement authority and have exercised that power with large civil fines and penalties.
FDA advises consumers to consult with a health care professional before deciding to take a dietary supplement.
Why do some dietary supplements have wording on the label that says: "This statement has not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease"?
This statement, known as a "disclaimer," is required by law (21 U.S.C. 343(r)(6)(C) and 21 CFR 101.93(b)–(d)) when a manufacturer makes a structure/function claim or certain other claims in dietary supplement labeling. In general, structure/function claims describe the role of a nutrient or dietary ingredient intended to affect the structure or function of the body in humans or characterize the documented mechanism by which a nutrient or dietary ingredient acts to maintain such structure or function. The other dietary supplement labeling claims that require the disclaimer are claims of a benefit related to a classical nutrient deficiency disease and claims of general well-being from consumption of a dietary ingredient. These three types of claims are not approved by FDA and do not require FDA evaluation before they are used in dietary supplement labeling. Accordingly, DSHEA requires that when a dietary supplement label or other labeling includes such a claim, the claim must be accompanied by a disclaimer informing consumers that FDA has not evaluated the claim. The disclaimer must also state that the product is not intended to "diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease" because only a drug can legally make such a claim.
Always consult with your health professional if a Nutraceutical is right for you.

Neuro-Optometry
The visual processing is commonly affected following an acquired brain injury:concussion, trauma, stroke, etc. or as part of a neurological condition as Parkinson's Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Seizure disorders, etc. Changes to the visual system can result in blurred vision, double vision, discomfort, headaches, poor depth perception, balance difficulties, changes in peripheral (side) vision and limited ability to perform visual tasks throughout the day like reading, driving, computer use, etc. Early diagnosis and treatment of these vision conditions is a critical component of overall recovery. Long standing vision conditions impede rehabilitation therapies (physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, etc) as well as prolong the return to normal daily activities. Patients who have not experienced well correcting their vision problems with soft contact lenses, or those who desire a sharper level of vision than soft lenses can provide, can also benefit from trying Rigid Gas Permeable contact lenses. Rigid gas-permeable (RGP) lenses are a type of contact lens made from hard, rigid plastic that retains the oxygen permeability that you would typically expect from softer or more flexible contact lenses. While soft lenses do provide a more instant fit and more comfort than RGP lenses, RGP lenses can undoubtedly provide a high level of comfort as well—just after an adaptation period.

Scleral contact lenses are typically used to fit the most difficult irregular cornea patients or as a therapeutic device to manage severe ocular surface disease. The bearing force of these lenses rests on the scleral conjunctiva, which allows them to vault completely over the corneal surface. Scleral lenses are unique in that they semi-seal to the eye, and so a well fit lens does not move with blinking. This unique characteristic allows them to hold a large liquid reservoir that can mask extreme amounts of astigmatism for the irregular corneal patient or act as a liquid bandage to manage ocular surface disease. Blinking over the contact lens causes some flexure, which allows tear exchange as the lens acts like a diaphragm pump.
