As a historian, Assia Djebar was asked by Pathé-Gaumont to sift through some old film reels, which turned out to be discarded newsreels on the colonies, focusing on the everyday life of the Maghrebi peoples from the early twentieth century to the Second World War. Out of these colonial remains, Djebar, in collaboration with poet Malek Alloula and composer Ahmed Essyad, wove together the footage of the Zerda ceremony with poetic voice-overs recounting the lived experiences of indigenous Algerians, interspersed with ‘songs of oblivion’ to mark traditions that are being lost to colonialism even as they are tokenised by and subjugated to the colonial gaze.

In July 1982, the Israeli army besieged Beirut. Four days
earlier, Jocelyne Saab saw her house burn down and 150
years go up in smoke. She wonders: when has all this
started? Each place will then become a story and each

𝘔𝘢𝘳𝘸𝘢 𝘈𝘳𝘴𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘰𝘴
2022 – 35𝙢𝙞𝙣
The film follows a collaborative project that attempts to shift the status of a private land in the North of Lebanon to a common or a social waqf. The aim would be to advance the right of usership over ownership. The land would only be used by people who do not own land for agricultural purposes. The film follows this process. Matter and land become a witness to a certain history of non-ownership. The interconnectedness of the geological, the historical, the legal, and the agricultural brings forward a kind of ecology of thought whose purpose is communalisation and rehabilitation.
𝘔𝘢𝘳𝘸𝘢 𝘈𝘳𝘴𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘰𝘴' practice tackles structural and infrastructural questions using different devices, forms, and strategies. From architectural spaces, their transformation and adaptability within the conflict, to artist-run spaces and temporary conventions between feminist communes and cooperatives, the practice tends to open up interstice within and parallel to existing art structures allowing
experimentation with different kinds of politics.
Arsanios was a researcher in the Fine Art Department at the Jan Van Eyck Academie, Maastricht (2010–12). She is currently a Ph.D. candidate at the Akademie der bildenden Künste in Vienna.

2014 – 25 𝙢𝙞𝙣
This video has its roots in back issues of the pan-Arab culture magazine Al-Hilal, which, during the Algerian War, frequently praised the revolutionary and freedom fighter Djamila Bouhired as a model of Arab womanhood.
Different voices, film, and print materials are used to explore this history.
What does it mean to play the role of a freedom fighter?
What does it mean to become an icon?
Between role-playing and political projects, how does the constitution of the subject serve certain political purposes?

We could not be happier and more thankful.
The films, the people, flavors and connections that bring us together in this event were once again warmly hosted by Largo Residências and this time, incredibly portrayed by José Farinha (https://www.josefarinha.com/).
Still, 4 sessions will be taking place, so thank you to all of you that came, and to all the ones that are still to come.
See you soon 💜

𝙄𝙨𝙢𝙖ï𝙡 𝘽𝙖𝙝𝙧𝙞
2016 – 32 𝙢𝙞𝙣
Voices accompany the emptiness; at first, Foyer seems to be a projection without a film.
People approach the cameraman at work, questioning him about what he is doing.
The film experience intrigues people, it interrogates and ultimately transforms the camera into a foyer (in the sense of a hearth), around which people gather, to speak, discuss and listen.

“𝙄𝙨𝙢𝙖ï𝙡 𝘽𝙖𝙝𝙧𝙞 makes elementary and empirical gestures, and focuses on “what is happening”, and the effects these operations have on him. The artist positions himself as an observer; he gropes around and talks of “shortsightedness” in relation to his work. He then sets up what he calls a “capture device” for these gestures, usually using video, but also photography and sound. Quite often, it is outside the frame of the image that meaning emerges, in the perceptible presence of the surrounding world, which is suddenly revealed.” (François Piron)
Ismaïl Bahri’s work has been presented at La Criée (Rennes), Jeu de Paume (Paris), Les églises (Chelles), L’Espace Khiasma (Lilas), Staatliche Kunsthalle (Karlsruhe), Kunst Im Tunnel (Düsseldorf), the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (Lisbon), among others. His films have been selected at international film festivals such as TIFF (Toronto), NYFF (New york), IFFR (Rotterdam) and FID (Marseille).

2005 – 30 𝙢𝙞𝙣
The house of the Dagher family was occupied for 7 years. As the war ends, Ali Hashisho, a member of the Lebanese resistance, writes a letter to the Dagher family justifying the use of their home and welcoming them back. The letter was placed inside an empty case of a B-10, 82 mm mortar, and buried in the garden.
In November 2002, Akram Zaatari heads back to Ain el Mir to search for this letter.

𝘼𝙠𝙧𝙖𝙢 𝙕𝙖𝙖𝙩𝙖𝙧𝙞 produced more than fifty films and videos, a dozen books, and countless installations of photographic material, all sharing an interest in writing histories, and pursuing a range of interconnected themes, subjects, and practices related to excavation, political resistance and the temporal play inherent to letters that have been lost, found, buried, discovered, or otherwise delayed in reaching their destinations. Zaatari was a co-founder of the Arab Image Foundation, a groundbreaking, artist-driven organization devoted to the research and study of photography in the Arab world, he made invaluable and uncompromising contributions to the wider discourse on preservation and archival practice.

Measures of Distance
Mona Hatoum
1988 - 15 min 35s
Grainy stills, an extreme close-up, the mother, the shower, and a house in Beirut.
As much as the work portrays the emotional intimacy of the relationship between mother and daughter, it also speaks of exile, displacement, disorientation, and a tremendous sense of loss as a result of the separation caused by war
.
We Began By Measuring Distance
Basma al-Sharif
2009 - 19 min
An anonymous group fills their time by measuring distance. Sound, images, and text are weaved together to explore the ultimate disenchantment with the facts when the visuals fail to communicate the tragedy.
